:: CSBowling Clinic Document: Adding More Hook to Your Game ::
A cupped wrist with strong finger pressure is one way to create more hooking power.

The best benefit of a power game is creating a wider hook angle into the pocket. A larger entry angle to the pocket provides more strikes. If youd like to add more hooking power to your game, heres how:(for right handers, reverse for left handers)

The first techinque is repositioning your body to the "power line". When a player hits the top of his back swing, a power player will "open" his right shoulder, rotating his upper body clockwise, so his shoulders are no longer parallel with the foul line. The opposite arm is in front of the body, pointing down the lane. When the power player begins to go through the realease, the upper body and shoulders rotate back to be parallel as the arm swing continues to the target.

The longer arm swing created by the open shoulders is what generates the power. Most accuracy players dont open there shoulders.

Leverage is the next step. In order to create leverage, you need a fixed point to move against. That fixed point comes at the foul line when you want your body in a balanced position over your slide foot and a deep knee bend. Your body will reach the foul line before the ball, create the fixed point before you realease the ball.

It's important that you allow gravity to do its job and let the ball fall naturally from the top of the swing into the down swing. As the ball falls from the swing, the shoulders will close automatically.

Forcing the ball into the down swing causes problems such as excess shoulder movement that will kill your leverage and accuracy.

Last step is the realease. Cupping the ball(the bending of hand toward the wrist) is a good way to generate power.
Example:

The longer the fingers stay in the ball, the more revs you can create. The power players get a lot under the ball and use tighly coiled fingers to get more hook.

But the down side is that power players sacrifice a degree of accuracy in order to get a better entry angle to the pocket. But those who play a accuracy game will sacrifice a higher entry angle to the pocket. You have to decide which is best for you.
