Small Block Chevy - Gear Drive Installation

If you want the sound of a blower & more accurate timing maybe you should convert to a gear drive.

Here are the parts, read directions several times !!! You will need a Harmonic balancer & gear puller

Choose one of the 5 cam offset bushings 0,1,2,3,5 degrees

This is the camshaft thrust bearing assembly

This is the thrust bearing on the cam gear.

Note the engine is at TDC   marks are at 6 & 12 O clock

Pull middle gears out some & install cover so it determines clearance

If this touches the block grind till you have at least .005 - .075 clearance

Instead of clearance putty I used red paint on masking tape.

The gears should be all flush 

The camshaft thrust bearing needs to be .005 - .010  from the cover

Scrape off old gasket, Tape on new gasket when using for clearance testing

I decided it was time to repaint my 10 year old fan

The finished product less than an hour of work

An old piece of  foam or cardboard holds items

All done !!! Check for leaks & lets go for a ride.
