Medical Study Areas & Doctors Involved in Histiocytosis
Disclaimer:  All of these primers are written by parents that have NO medical background prior to having to deal directly with the disease.  The contents should not be misinterpreted as medical advice.  Our opinions could be wrong.  The intent is to help you come up the learning curve and hopefully bypass some of the difficulties we have encountered.  Always refer to your doctor.  Like almost all things in life, there are MANY correct answers.

At times it can seem overwhelming, especially is your are not from a medical background.  For us, it was sometimes difficult to get a handle on all the different doctors we were meeting and all the difference areas they were responsible for.  All the titles come from greek and latin, so it is useful to understand the word roots.

There are 11 major systems in the body, they are:

1) Integumentary System (Skin) - Doctors: Dermitologists
2) Skeletal System - Doctors: Radiologists, oncologist
3) Nervous System - Doctors: Neurologists
4) Endocrine System (hormone system) - Doctors: Endrocrinologists
5) Cardiovascular System (Blood, heart & blood vessels) - Doctors: Hematologists, Cardiologists
6) Lymphatic and Immune System - Doctors: Infectious Disease,  Immunologists
7) Respiratory System (Lungs & Airways)  - Doctors:  Respiratory Physiology
8) Digestive System (GI tract plus liver, gallbladder, pancreas...) - Doctors: Hepatologist, GI...
9) Urinary System (Kidneys, bladder ...)
10) Muscular System
11) Reproductive System
LCH alone can harm the first eight systems.  Surgery, chemotherapy & radiation treatment could impact all 11.  There seems to be specialization doctors for each of these areas and chances are you are going to encounter most of them.

Note: -ology means study, -ologist means one who studies, any of the below -ologys can be switched to -ologist

System Doctors / Study Areas:

Oncology - (Onco - tumor or mass) The study of diseases that cause cancer.
Hematology - (Haema - blood) The study of the morphology of the blood and blood forming tissues.
Endocrinology - (endo - within, crin - secretion - study of internal secretions) The study of hormones and how they control body functions.
Respiratory Physiology - The study of the functions of the air passageways and lungs.
Radiology - The study of X-rays in the diagnosis of a disease.
Neurologists - Study of the entire nervous system including the brain & spinal chord (central nervous system)
General Doctors / Study Areas:
Cytology - (Cyt - Cell: Study of cells) The study of cells. Implies the use of light or electron microscopic methods for the study of morphology.
Histiology/Histology - (Hist - Tissue: Study of tissue) The study of cells and tissue on the microscopic level.
Anatomy - (ana - up, tomy - to cut: To cut up) The science of body structures and the relationships among structures
Surgeon - You can guess this one
Physiology-  (physi - nature: Study of nature) The study of how living organisms function.
Pathology - (path - disease: Study of disease) The branch of medicine concerned with disease, especially its structure and its functional effects on the body. (Note, pathologist use histology and cytology)
Histopathology -  (Study of disease tissue) This is the science concerned with the study of microscopic changes in diseased tissues.
Clinician - A health professional engaged in the care of patients, as distinguished from one working in other areas.
Pathophysiology - (Study of disease in the body) The study of functional changes associated with disease and aging.
Pathogenesis - (genesis - start: Start of disease) The origin and development of disease.
Morphology - (morph - structure: Study of structure) A study of the configuration or the structure of animals and plants.
Immunology- (Study of the immune system) A subfield of biology that deals with the study of antigens and the immuneprocess and how humans and higher animals fight off disease.
Imunocytology - (Study of the immune system at the cellular level) The study of the immune system cells
Immunohistology - The study of the immune systems effect on tissue
Immunohistochemistry - Histochemical localization of immunoreactive substances using labeled antibodies as reagents.
Histiochemistry -
Histiophysiology -
Epidemiology - The study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states and events in populations and the control of health problems, the study of epidemic disease.
Etiology - A branch of knowledge concerned with the causes of particular phenomena, specifically a branch of medical science concerned with the causes and origins of diseases.  The study of factors of causation or those associated with the causation of disease or abnormal body states.
I am sure there is more, and I will be adding to this page when I remember them!
