Shoppers chose meaningful gifts, ranging from stuffed animals for children with cancer to food for a family to music therapy for Alzheimer's patients, as well as tangible gifts that provided HOPE and HELP to those less fortunate.

ONGOING PROGRAMS AND EVENTS

Flashes of Hope

Our chapter of Flashes of Hope had its first photo shoot at Inova Fairfax Hospital in March 2006. This program provides families dealing with childhood cancer with a portfolio of beautiful portraits of their child with family members, friends, or special hospital staff members. Thanks to volunteer commercial photographers, make-up artists, and administrators, there is no cost to the family. Developing fees and portfolio costs are underwritten by grants. For more information, visit www.flashesofhope.org

Cameron Glen/Sunrise Assisted Living: Senior Friends

Giving Circle members are currently playing canasta once a week at Sunrise Assisted Living and leading creative art and craft workshops on Thursday mornings at Cameron Glen Nursing Center. Parties are organized for special holidays and are a treat for all! Volunteers are always needed for bingo, shopping trips, or daily recreation. Well-behaved pets may also be approved to visit! Please contact Mary.

Kids' Club  @ Embry Rucker Homeless Shelter

Kids' Club focuses on literacy and educational enrichment for young residents of the shelter. Special cultural art workshops and  events are held twice a month on Wednesday evenings. If you have a special talent to share or would like more information, please contact Mary Beth

Crafting Hope/Creating Futures

Avon's Hello Tomorrow Fund awarded a grant to Linda Strup to launch a new initiative to teach homeless and low-income women arts and crafts that they can sell for an income. Knitting, beadwork (jewelry-making), and holiday ornament workshops take place weekly or biweekly at the Stonegate and Cedar Ridge Community Centers. To volunteer, please contact Linda.

Book Circle

Members meet monthly to discuss a selected book related to the Giving Circle of HOPE's mission.  For more information, email Marybeth with "book circle" in the subject line.

OTHER COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER PROJECTS, EVENTS, AND NEEDS

Volunteeer for Mission of Mercy on March 13 and 14 at the NVCC campus in Springfield. Mission of Mercy is a project of the community and the Northern Virginia Dental Society. Volunteer dentists come  together once a year to provide free dental care to 800 low-income uninsured adults including cleaning, fillings, root canals and simple and surgical extractions.  NOVA ScriptsCentral, one of our grantees, is providing volunteer pharmacists to help with medications for the patients.

General (non-dental) volunteers are needed to work one shift (or more if they wish) on one of those days. The first shift is 6:30AM to noon and the second is 11:30AM to 5PM.  Doctors, nurses, EMTs and people bilingual in Spanish are also needed.

To register people email jknox3@cox.net by March 11 with your name, day and shift, and special information such as a second language.

Friends of Guesthouse is also in need of a few volunteers to help with a special fundraising event. Please contact director@friendsofguesthouse.org.
