Atlantic City Information
Atlantic City gaming began in 1976 with Resorts being the first casino to open in 1978. There are currently 12 casinos in the Atlantic City area. Nine of these (Caesars, Bally's, Resorts, Sands, Trump Plaza, Hilton, Tropicana, Taj Mahal, and the Showboat) are located on the Boardwalk and 3 (Trump Marina, Harrah's, and the Borgata) are located in the Marina area. For those not familiar with Atlantic City, the Marina is nowhere near the ocean so if you like an ocean view or an evening walk on the boardwalk, you would not want to stay at the Marina. I personally prefer to stay at the Showboat or the Taj Mahal. These two hotels are connected at the end of the boardwalk near the carnival pier.
Here is a map of the Atlantic City Area (Please note how the area is broken into "DownBeach", "MidBeach" and "UpBeach". As you drive into Atlantic City, this is what the signs will say to guide you.
I have stayed at the following Atlantic City hotels: Harrah's, Trump Marina, Showboat, Taj Mahal, Tropicana, Resorts, & The Claridge (now part of Bally's). The best room was at the Claridge where they gave me a suite with a hot tub which was pretty cool. Next would be Harrah's Atrium Suites.
You can walk along the boardwalk to all of the boardwalk hotels but bring a good pair of shoes as it is a really long hike. In the Marina area you can easily walk between Trump Marina and Harrah's but the Borgata is quite a hike away and I don't recommend trying to walk to it.
To get around Atlantic City, avoid using your car and especially cabs and instead ride the Jitney (a small bus). The Jitney will take you pretty much anywhere in Atlantic City for $1.50. Parking in casino garage will cost $4-$5 and if you use valet parking, be prepared for a long wait to retrieve your car.
Lower table limits will generally be found along the boardwalk but unlike some other gaming areas, it can be a real challenge to find a $5 table game especially on weekends (there are no tables below $5 anywhere in Atlantic City).
Gaming rules can be slightly different between Atlantic City and Las Vegas. For instance, at the crap table in Vegas, a "buffalo" bet is all the hard ways plus eleven whereas in AC a "buffalo" bet is all the hard ways plus seven. Also, in Vegas all hard way bets will work unless called off whereas in AC they are automatically off unless called on. These little changes are very important since you have money on the line and you should familiarize yourself with the new rules.
Ok, you know what's there now. This will help guide you on the past...... (the arrows show the progression)
