1998 Shania
Twain -- Come On Over Back in 1993, Shania first appeared on the country music scene as new Canadian artist. Her first album, Shania Twain, had couple hits, now forgotten: Dance With the One Who Brought You & What Made You Say That? Then in 1995 she released her second album, The Woman in Me. Now, I do not know if this happened in the rest of the country, but the Phoenix area radio stations quite literally played her new releases, Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under? Any Man of Mine and You Win My Love, to death. Sure, they were new and popular songs, but did that mean they had to play them every moment they could. Ironically, the song The Woman In Me was great, but hardly ever played compared to others of this album. By this time, I was pretty much sick of Shania Twain, that was until… Come 1997, a brand new album, Come on Over, and the release of Love Gets Me Every Time (#3) soon followed by Don’t Be Stupid (#4). My first impression was these are the only decent track on this album, okay so I was wrong. I was surprised one Thursday night after getting out of an evening class at Arizona State University. While sitting in traffic to exit the structure I turned on my radio to hear a live interview with Shania which included the playing her new album in its entirety. I was amazed how great this album sounded and that it had an hour of music on 16 tracks!!! What sets this album apart from Shania’s others is her use of lots instruments in all of her songs. Lots and lots of fiddles, various steel guitars and even some electric guitar and acoustic piano. If you have heard Don’t Be Stupid, you really notice the fiddles. I love some of these song titles, very catchy:
Some other great songs include, From This Moment On (#5), which features special guest Bryan White. I was very impressed with this song, I am not much of a Bryan White fan, but teamed up with Shania, they sounded great. We MAY see this performed at one of the upcoming ACM or CMA awards shows. You’re Still The One (#10), there are those songs that are going to be big at weddings, this one is going to be big for anniversary parties! Finally, there is Rock This Country! (#15). Interestingly, when the radio station did the interview with Shania, this song was played last and for a good reason. As I am sure most of you die-hard Shania fan’s know she will be touring this year, this song is here way of announcing this. Again, this album really surprised me, especially, the price. It was priced the same as a regular length CD even though it an hour of music with 16 tracks. One thing strange though about this CD, is there is almost no break between songs. I really don’t think there any reason why 60 minutes would be difficult to fit on to a CD. On a different note, now the Shania is beginning to tour, we probably won’t be seeing a new album from her in quite a while. This would explain the 16 tracks on this album. Well, that pretty much sums it up for this review. Next month I’ll review Clint Black Nothin' But The Tail Lights. Questions or comments about this review, use the e-mail link below. |
