Lari White -- Stepping Stone

I was a somewhat disappointed with this CD. There are only two songs I really enjoy, Stepping Stone (track #2) and You Can't Go Home Again (flies on the butter) (track #4). The others are okay and some are starting to get air-play here in Phoenix. These others may eventually grow on me, may be not, time will tell.

Stepping Stone, a positive and upbeat song giving a new way to look at the obstacles in life:

"This ain't no stumbling block
It's Just A Stepping Stone"

Even better is You Can't Go Home Again (flies on the butter). This songs describes the many memories of growing up at home in the country. Back when things seemed so simple, carefree and laid back:

"Old tin roof, leaves in the gutter
A hole in the screen door big as your fist and flies on the butter
Mama baking sugar cookies, we were watching cartoons
Heard her holler from the kitchen which one of you yougens wants to lick the spoon"

There are many more fond memories of home she describes. The best and really scary line..."It doesn't feel like it was all that long ago"...boy is that ever the truth, it is amazing the older you get the quicker time passes. We all wish we could go back to these times, but..."There's a blacktop road, a faded yellow centerline and it can take you back to the place, but it can't take you back in time". Again, all too true, you can go back now, but just ain't the same as it was back then.

Well, this did not turn out to be the best album in the world, but it does have potential. As more of Lari's album gets air-play, the songs will grow on you. My choice for next month, Greater Need from Lorrie Morgan should be better. Questions or comments about this review, use the e-mail link below.
