MAY 2006 TRIP TO NEW ENGLAND

Our trip started on May 2 with brief visits, (sleepovers, essentially) due to time constraints, with family in Virginia and Connecticut.  The main event was Nils’ 50th college reunion at Northeastern University in Boston.  It was a wonderful event and he saw several old (figuratively and literally) friends during the two days we were there.  The golden graduates marched in with the current graduating class and were honored.

Following our stay in Boston, we went to Southwest Harbor, Maine for two weeks at Harbor Ridge Resort on a timeshare exchange.  We were there two years ago and enjoyed it very much and it was just as nice this time.  The units all face the water and the mountains so the views are lovely.  We did several hikes as can be seen in the photos.  We also had lots of fog and rain when we either stayed in and read or went for drives.

The weekend between the two weeks in Southwest Harbor we went north to Aroostook County and had a very pleasant visit with Susie's aunt and cousin.   It also happened to be warmest weather of the entire two weeks!  On our way back to Harbor Ridge, we stopped in Ellsworth and got lobsters for dinner.  We think they were the best we have ever eaten.

After leaving the timeshare which is spacious and lovely, we spent four days at the cottage seen in the photo album in Salisbury Cove.  Among other things it had a toaster that toasted only one side of the bread and only one electrical plug in the 'kitchen' so you could not plug in the toaster, coffee pot, and microwave at the same time. But it was clean and a roof over our heads. As the manager pointed out, it was a step above camping.  It reminded us of how nice home actually is!

Although we had a lot of fog and rain, we still like this time of year for hiking.  The black flies were just arriving as we left and it’s always nice to avoid them!  On our way home, we were able to stop for longer visits with family in Granby, CT, where we went to granddaughter Nicole's school concert and daughter-in-law Lisa's graduation and then on to Ellen and Brennon's in Suffolk, VA, where we cat sat for a couple of days.

We arrived home on May 29 after many miles.
