STUDIO CODE OF ETHICS
The main goals of the Suzuki philosophy are for
students
- to build a noble soul,
- to develop an appreciation of
beauty,
- to give a sense of purpose to
life,
- to learn the discipline of
acquiring a skill,
- and to become fine human
beings.
Members of the Suzuki Piano Studio accept the principles stated in Nurtured by Love and other writings by Shinichi Suzuki and other leaders in the Talent Education movement.
These principles include:
1. Honoring the needs of the individual student as top
priority.
2. Loving encouragement of individual growth.
3. Mutual respect among all students, parents and teachers.
4. Setting a good example.
5. Striving for attainment of excellence.
6. Honesty.
7. Cooperation rather than competition.
Parents are basic to and a vital part of the Suzuki education process. Parents select and provide the environment and support for the child in every way.
Suzuki parents create the environment for optimum musical growth by setting the example of daily discipline by being willing to:
a. Attend and carefully observe lessons.
b. Prepare physically and mentally for the lesson.
c. Schedule and supervise daily practice sessions.
d. Do the best to have positive, productive and cheerful practice sessions.
e. Play the CD and/or tape for multiple hours daily.
f. Support and cooperate with the teacher's instructions and practice procedures.
g. Plan opportunities for the student(s) to observe others in performance, such as recitals and concerts.
h. Play the finest recorded music in the home and car.
i. Raise the morale and increase the self esteem of the child in every way possible.
j. Provide the best equipment financially possible.
k. Provide practice incentives if necessary.
l. Find something in the child to praise every day.
Parents further set the example of the Suzuki spirit by helping and supporting all students by being willing to:
1. Recognize and appreciate every child, without comparing one child with each other.
2. Offer positive support and encouragement for all class/studio members who participate, listen and perform.
3. Support the teacher and members of the studio by following studio policies.
4. Participate in and support the activities of studio.
PRINCIPLES FOR STUDENTS
The student is the whole and entire reason for this studio and its activities.
Children are our nation's greatest asset, our country's most important and valuable resource. Every child has total potential to be his/her very best.
In order to reach the highest potential, each student is encouraged to be willing to:
1. Show respect for their instrument and equipment, and that of others.
2. Cooperate with parents, teachers and other students.
3. Be a willing and co-operative listener.
4. Commit to cheerful daily practice.
5. Come to the lesson with my lesson practice record completed each week.
6. Prepare my notebook, music and written work lessons and bring all necessary materials to and from the piano.
7. Attend lessons and recitals regularly.
8. Support and encourage other students.
9. Wear clean socks in the studio.
10. Wash my hands before every lesson.
11. Avoid bringing in food or drink into the studio.
12. Remember to put into practice Dr. Suzuki's two main axioms:
a. "Practice only on the days you eat."
b.
"Never ever give up."
PRINCIPLES OF THE TEACHER
Dr. Suzuki says, "Everything depends on the teacher." The teacher is the role model for the students and parents not only in performance, but also in business and daily life.
The teacher provides the model for the student by:
1. Continuing education in the Suzuki philosophy and methods.
2. Upgrading teaching and performance skills in order to provide the best and most beautiful performance example possible.
3. Maintaining an organized studio.
4. Showing respect for all students, parents and teachers.
5. Loving encouragement of parents and students, by being supportive, courteous and honest.
6. Providing avenues and opportunities to improve and build the child's self esteem.
Suzuki teachers recognize that the focus is on the child, and that the goals and needs of the teacher should not interfere with what is best for the student. Therefore, in addition to the preceding, Suzuki teachers foster mutual, open communication in the transfer of students between themselves.
Procedures for the transfer of students:
1. Support and cooperate with the other teacher, student and parents for the smoothest possible transition.
2. Obtain assurance from the parents and/or other teacher that all personal and financial obligations have been met.
