Descendants of Annaniah GIFFORD

Generation One

1. Annaniah1 GIFFORD was probably born in the late 1640s or early 1650s probably in Sandwich, Barnstable Co, MA. He married Elizabeth as her first husband. He died before 13 Feb 1709/10 near Manasquan, Shrewsbury (now Wall) Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.

The exact year of Annaniah GIFFORD's birth is not known. The earliest possible date is 1644 because older siblings John and Patience were probably born no earlier than 1640 and 1642 respectively. The latest possible date is 1652 because younger siblings Robert and William were probably born no later than 1656 and 1654 respectively. Annaniah's father, William GIFFORD, had 7 children (John, Patience, Annaniah, William, Robert, Christopher, Mary) who were born between the early 1640s and the early 1660s (as well as 2 sons that were born in the 1680s). These 7 children could have been by one wife. But it is more likely that John and Patience were by a first wife and William, Robert, Christopher and Mary by a second wife. Annaniah is the one child who could belong to either set of children. If he was born near either the beginning or end of his possible birth date range, then there is a nice gap between the sets of children. A later birth date for Annaniah fits better with the fact that his oldest grandson was born around 1700. All of this leads to the conclusion that Annaniah GIFFORD was probably born in the late 1640s or early 1650s.

Annaniah GIFFORD was probably born in Sandwich, MA. He could have been born in Stamford, CT, since there was a William GIFFORD who was banished from that town in 1647. He also could have been born in England since his father emigrated from there between 1643 and 1647.1

A number of sources claim that the mother of Annaniah GIFFORD was Elizabeth GRANT or Patience RUSSELL. No evidence has been found, though, to definitely tie either of these women to William GIFFORD. The link to a Patience RUSSELL may have resulted from the fact that one of William's great-grandsons, also named William, married a Patience RUSSELL in 1746 in Dartmouth, MA.

In Oct 1664, the English captured from the Dutch an area which included most of present-day New Jersey. This was the start of a large migration of New Englanders into New Jersey. Sometime during this period, William GIFFORD purchased land near Long Branch in Shrewsbury Township, Monmouth County, from John JENKINS of Sandwich. This probably happened around 1668, when the two men also exchanged land in Sandwich.2 It is not known whether William GIFFORD ever lived in Monmouth County, but his land there was divided in half for the intended use of his sons Annaniah and Christopher. Annaniah GIFFORD settled on his land by 12 Sep 1673, when he was included on a list of Shrewsbury male inhabitants compiled by the military.3 Christopher's half of the land was sold by William GIFFORD back to John JENKINS on 14 Apr 1681. Christopher does not seem to have lived in New Jersey very long (if at all), even though his name continued to appear in the Monmouth County land records until he cleared up the matter in 1689.4,5

After the division of New Jersey in 1675 and the establishment of the General Board of Proprietors of the Eastern Division of New Jersey, Annaniah GIFFORD went through the required paperwork to become the legal owner of his land near Long Branch. On 1 Dec 1676, he received a warrant to survey 240 acres + meadow.6 In 1681, he paid quit rent on 286 acres in Shrewsbury Township. 186 acres were listed in the name of Christopher GIFFORD, so Annaniah had added 100 acres to the original land.7 Finally, on 20 Jan 1687/88, Annaniah received a grant for the 286 acres from the East Jersey Proprietors.8 He had purchased 4 acres near Raccoon Island from William SCOTT on 10 Dec 1684 to make a total of 290 acres near Long Branch.9

Annaniah GIFFORD also owned land on the Shark River in Monmouth County. On 15 Jan 1685/86 he petitioned the East Jersey Proprietors as an 'old settler.'10 On 4 Dec 1686 (Stillwell has 1685, but that would have been before the petition), he received a warrant to survey 100 acres on the south side of the Shark River in Shrewsbury Township.11 The land was surveyed on 22 Jun 1687.11,12 A grant for the 100 acres was issued by the East Jersey Proprietors on 1 May 1688.13 Annaniah had also obtained the rights to 5 acres of meadow on the north side of the Shark River from Nicholas BROWN. These 5 acres were sold to Francis JACKSON on 4 Mar 1694/5, but some Shark River land probably remained in the GIFFORD family until at least 1755. In that year, Annaniah's grandson Joshua GIFFORD was listed in church records as from Shark River.14,15

On 7 Sep 1688, Annaniah GIFFORD purchased from Francis JEFFERY the rights to a 1/128 part of a 1/24 part of East Jersey.16 These rights were sold by grandson William GIFFORD to grandson Benoni GIFFORD and probable relative Peter PARKER. Benoni and Peter received a warrant to survey 151 and 9/10 acres, but the exact location of the land has not yet been determined.17

In 1692, Annaniah GIFFORD decided to move. On 10 Mar 1691/92 he deeded his 290 acres near Long Branch to Richard STOUT, and in exchange, received 200+50 acres on the north side of the Manasquan River. The deed for the Manasquan land was recorded in Monmouth County. No deed has been found for the Long Branch land, but it was mentioned in two later deeds from the STOUT family. These later deeds have two different dates for the original deed. One has 4 Mar 1691/92 and the other has 10 Mar 1691/92 (the NEHGR article only has the 4 Mar date). Since the date on the Manasquan deed was 10 Mar 1691/92, that was probably also the date on the Long Branch deed.

Annaniah GIFFORD's land on the Manasquan River was in present-day Wall Township, which was formed in 1851 from Howell Township, which was formed in 1801 from Shrewsbury Township. It was on the north side of the river near the old Squan bridge.

Annaniah also owned land on Barnegat Beach. He was mentioned as a boundary in a grant from the East Jersey Proprietors dated 1 Sep 1694.18

No will has been found for Annaniah GIFFORD. Under the law of primogeniture which was still being used in New Jersey at that time, if a person died intestate the eldest son usually inherited all of the land. This seems to be the case with Annaniah and his land. Eldest son William sold the original 200 acres of the Manasquan GIFFORD homestead to his brothers Joseph and John in deeds dated 13 Feb 1709/10.19,20

The unusual name 'Annaniah' was spelled many ways in the older records. Sometimes there was an 'H' in front, or an 's' at the end instead of an 'h', or a single 'n' in place of 'nn'. 'Annaniah' seems to have survived as the preferred spelling.

Annaniah GIFFORD was married by 1 Dec 1676. This is known because the warrant he received on that date was for a married man's allotment of land (240 acres @ 120 acres per person).6

Annaniah GIFFORD's wife Elizabeth has been listed in a number of sources as the daughter of Eliakim WARDELL and Lydia PERKINS. Eliakim WARDELL's daughter Elizabeth, however, probably married Samuel WHITE. The confusion arose because Elizabeth GIFFORD was a witness to the marriage on 29 Mar 1681 of one of Eliakim WARDELL's daughters, and it was wrongly assumed that this witness must be Eliakim's daughter Elizabeth. Witnesses were often related to the bride or groom, however, so Elizabeth GIFFORD could still be part of the WARDELL family as the niece of Eliakim. Eliakim did name his oldest son Joseph.21

Annaniah GIFFORD's wife Elizabeth probably came from a family with the name Joseph in it since that name did not appear in the GIFFORD family before Annaniah. Elizabeth could have been the sister of Joseph PARKER, who settled near Long Branch from Portsmouth, Newport Co, RI. That would make her a possible aunt to Annaniah's daughter-in-law Margaret, but that would be OK if Margaret's husband William was Annaniah's son by a first wife. Elizabeth could also have been a close relative of Joseph WEST or Joseph LAWRENCE. Both of these men owned land on the Manasquan River. These are the only Josephs found so far who lived near Annaniah and Elizabeth GIFFORD.

Annaniah GIFFORD may have had a first wife whom he married in Sandwich (the WARDELLs came from southern New Hampshire and the PARKERs came from Rhode Island). Would he have come to New Jersey as a single man without any relatives? It's possible that his father came to New Jersey for awhile to help him get settled. But Annaniah may have migrated with a first wife and some of her family. Also, there is circumstantial evidence that Elizabeth was young enough to only be a second wife ... she remarried after 1712 and lived until 1729.

Annaniah GIFFORD may have had a fourth son named Annaniah (or Joshua). This is because of the given names chosen by his grandson Annaniah GIFFORD (born 1703). Annaniah 1703 named his 3 sons Amos, Annaniah, and Joshua. These 3 sons were born right after the marriage, with no gaps for a missing son. It would have been very unusual at that time for a man not to have named one of his sons after his father. The name Amos appeared in his wife's family, so Annaniah 1703's father was likely named Annaniah or Joshua. It's possible that Annaniah 1703 had a son named William or Joseph by a first wife. Also, there was an Annaniah GIFFORD named as a boundary in a 1718 deed. But the boundary information was copied from an earlier deed and could refer to the original Annaniah even though he was deceased.22

Annaniah and Elizabeth GIFFORD were not recorded as members in the monthly meeting records of the Shrewsbury Society of Friends (Quakers), but their names appear a few times as witnesses to marriages. On 6 Nov 1674, Annaniah was a witness to the marriage of Restore LIPPINCOTT and Hannah SHATTOCK. On 29 Mar 1681, both Annaniah and Elizabeth were witnesses to the marriage of Ephraim ALLEN and Margaret WARDELL. On 7 Jul 1692, Elizabeth was a witness to the marriage of John LIPPINCOTT and Sarah HUETT. And on 12 Oct 1712, Elizabeth was a witness to the marriage of Abel PRESTON and Meribah SLOCUM.21,23

Elizabeth. Elizabeth GIFFORD married (second) Thomas GREEN after 12 Oct 1712.23,21 She died shortly before 11 Dec 1729 (maybe on 29 Nov) in Shrewsbury (now Wall) Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.24,25,26

Many sources have Elizabeth GIFFORD's second husband as John GREEN. However, in Monmouth County deeds dated 22 Sep 1716 and 16 Jul 1722, John GREEN was listed as from Newport, RI. The 1722 deed listed 3 brothers ... John, Henry of RI, and Thomas of Shrewsbury (deceased). Thomas was in Manasquan by 8 Mar 1700/01, so Elizabeth probably married Thomas GREEN, not John GREEN.27,28

A death date of 29 Nov 1729 for Elizabeth (GIFFORD) GREEN has been floating around the Internet, but the source for that date has not been found.

An inventory of the estate of Elizabeth (GIFFORD) GREEN was filed on 11 Dec 1729 in Monmouth Co, NJ, (debts due by Joseph GIFFORD Sr). Administration of the estate of Elizabeth (GIFFORD) GREEN was granted to Joseph GIFFORD on 6 Jun 1730 in Monmouth Co, NJ, (Joseph GIFFORD was described as her son and heir).29,25

Known children of Annaniah1 GIFFORD and Elizabeth were as follows:

Generation Two

2. William2 GIFFORD (Annaniah1) was born near Long Branch, Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. He married (first) Margaret PARKER, daughter of Joseph PARKER and Margaret. He married (second) Sarah. He died shortly before 8 Apr 1723 in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.

William GIFFORD may be the son of Annaniah GIFFORD by a first wife.

William GIFFORD's first wife was probably the daughter of Joseph and Margaret PARKER. Joseph and Margaret lived near the GIFFORDs near Long Branch and their son Peter probably married Elizabeth GIFFORD as his first wife. Peter PARKER bought land from Annaniah GIFFORD (his nephew?) in 1735 which was just above the main part of the original GIFFORD homestead. And he bought inherited GIFFORD land with Benoni GIFFORD (his nephew?) in 1740. The given names Margaret and Josiah also match very nicely. No daughter named Margaret is listed for Joseph and Margaret PARKER in the Quaker church records. But she would have been born about 1672 or 1673, which could be just before the birth records began or just before her parents joined the church.

William GIFFORD and his wife Margaret sold land in Shrewsbury (now Wall) Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, to John GIFFORD on 13 Feb 1709/10 (1/2 of the main 200 acres of the Gifford Manasquan homestead).20

William GIFFORD and his wife Margaret sold land in Shrewsbury (now Wall) Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, to Joseph GIFFORD on 13 Feb 1709/10 (1/2 of the main 200 acres of the Gifford Manasquan homestead, not recorded until 12 Aug 1730).19

The above 2 land records show that William GIFFORD probably inherited all of his father's land under the law of primogeniture that was still in use in New Jersey at that time.

An inventory of the estate of William GIFFORD was filed on 8 Apr 1723 in Monmouth Co, NJ.30 Administration of the estate of William GIFFORD was granted to John PINTARD and Anthony PINTARD on 13 May 1723 in Monmouth Co, NJ, (William's widow Sarah and son William had declined to administer the estate).30

For other possible children of William GIFFORD, see the children of (William or Joseph or John) GIFFORD.

Margaret PARKER was born near Long Branch, Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.

Known children of William2 GIFFORD and Margaret PARKER were as follows:

Known children of William2 GIFFORD and Sarah were:

3. Joseph2 GIFFORD (Annaniah1) was born near Long Branch, Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. He married Hope. He died after 9 Sep 1734 and probably after 15 Aug 1743 but probably before 1748.

Joseph GIFFORD bought land in Shrewsbury (now Wall) Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, from William GIFFORD on 13 Feb 1709/10 (1/2 of the main 200 acres of the Gifford Manasquan homestead, not recorded until 12 Aug 1730).19
Joseph GIFFORD was granted administration of the estate of Elizabeth (GIFFORD) GREEN on 6 Jun 1730 in Monmouth Co, NJ, (Joseph GIFFORD was described as her son and heir).29,25

Joseph GIFFORD and his wife Hope sold land in Shrewsbury (now Wall) Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, to William JEFFERY on 18 Aug 1730 (1/2 of the main 200 acres of the Gifford Manasquan homestead, acknowledged on 14 Mar 1731/32 and probably recorded shortly after).34

Joseph GIFFORD filed an inventory of the estate of Nathaniel BILLS Jr. on 9 Sep 1734 in Monmouth Co, NJ, (this was probably the Joseph who married Hope because Joseph Jr. would not have been old enough to be given the responsibility).35

Joseph GIFFORD witnessed the will of Anthony PINTARD dated 15 Aug 1743 Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.35

Joseph GIFFORD was not listed in not 1748 as a freeholder in Monmouth Co, NJ.

For other possible children of Joseph GIFFORD, see the children of (William or Joseph or John) GIFFORD.

Known children of Joseph2 GIFFORD and Hope were:

4. John2 GIFFORD (Annaniah1) was born near Long Branch, Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. He married Mary CAMMACK, daughter of Nathaniel CAMMACK and Mary WEST. He died after 5 Sep 1730 and probably before 1748 near Manasquan, Shrewsbury (now Wall) Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.

John GIFFORD bought land in Shrewsbury (now Wall) Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, from William GIFFORD on 13 Feb 1709/10 (1/2 of the main 200 acres of the Gifford Manasquan homestead).20

John GIFFORD was mentioned in a boundary when James HUBBARD sold land in Shrewsbury (now Wall) Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, to Gabriel STELLE on 12 Jun 1714.36

John GIFFORD was granted administration of the estate of Samuel ROGERS on 5 Sep 1730 in Monmouth Co, NJ.37

John GIFFORD was not listed in not 1748 as a freeholder in Monmouth Co, NJ.

For other possible children of John GIFFORD, see the children of (William or Joseph or John) GIFFORD.

Mary CAMMACK was born circa 1683 in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.21

In his will dated 29 Aug 1710, Nathaniel CAMMACK mentioned his daughter Mary GIFFORD.38 William GIFFORD's wife was Margaret in 1710 and Joseph GIFFORD's wife was Hope in 1730.

Known children of John2 GIFFORD and Mary CAMMACK were:

5. (William or Joseph or John)2 GIFFORD (Annaniah1) was born near Long Branch, Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.

NOTE: This is a 'dummy' individual used to link Annaniah GIFFORD with more of his probable descendants.

Known children of (William or Joseph or John)2 GIFFORD include:

Generation Three

6. William3 GIFFORD (William2, Annaniah1) was born in the very late 1690s or very early 1700s in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. He and Hannah ASHMORE obtained a marriage license on 8 May 1727 in Burlington, NJ.40 He and Catharine TAYLOR obtained a marriage license on 16 May 1734 in Burlington, NJ.40 He died in Little Egg Harbor Tp, Burlington (now Ocean) Co, NJ.

William GIFFORD moved south, probably not too long after the death of his father. He settled in Little Egg Harbor Township, Burlington (now Ocean) County. A number of other Monmouth County families also moved to that area.

William GIFFORD probably married twice. William GIFFORD of New Jersey, yeoman, and Hannah ASHMORE of New Jersey, spinster, obtained a marriage license on 8 May 1727. William GIFFORD of Little Egg Harbor, Burlington County, yeoman, and Catherine TAYLOR of [not listed], spinster, obtained a marriage license on 16 May 1734. Both of these marriage licenses were recorded in Burlington by the same Governor's Secretary (Samuel BUSTILL). Burlington was where all marriage bonds from West Jersey were recorded. The NEHGR article has Hannah ASHMORE as the widow of John ASHMORE of Hunterdon, but she was called a 'spinster' on the 1727 marriage license.40

William GIFFORD sold land in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, to Benoni (Benjamin) GIFFORD and Peter PARKER on 3 Mar 1739/40 (a 1/128 part of 1/24 of East New Jersey, recorded Liber AB, page 16, William was described as "formerly of Manasquan but now of Egg Harbor" and as the "undoubted heir of Hananiah Gifford").41,17

There was a Mary GIFFORD mentioned in the 1763 will of Samuel ANDREWS of Little Egg Harbor. Who was this Mary?

There were no known children of William3 GIFFORD and Hannah ASHMORE.

Catharine TAYLOR was born probably in Middletown Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.

Catharine (TAYLOR) GIFFORD may have been the daughter of Edward TAYLOR of Middletown Tp, Monmouth Co. However, none of her known descendants have the given name Edward.

There was a Jonathan TAYLOR who married Ann CLIFTON in 1740 in Burlington Co.

Known children of William3 GIFFORD and Catharine TAYLOR were as follows:

7. Annaniah3 GIFFORD (William2, Annaniah1) was born on 10 Mar 1702/03 (maybe 1703/04) in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.47 He married Mary HALSTEAD, daughter of Jonas HALSTEAD, on 27 Jan 1732/33 (maybe 1733/34) in Monmouth Co, NJ.47 He died after 29 Sep 1770 in Shrewsbury (now Brick) Tp, Monmouth (now Ocean) Co, NJ.48

Annaniah GIFFORD sold land in Shrewsbury (now Wall) Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, to Peter PARKER on 24 May 1735 (45 acres, north side of Manasquan River, sold by Peter 18 Feb 1737/38, this land was just north of the main 200 acres of the original GIFFORD Manasquan homestead and may have been the extra 50 acres of that homestead).31

Annaniah GIFFORD bought land in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, from David ALLEN on 8 Jun 1742 (north side of Manasquan River, maybe surveyed 13 Jun 1753, this could be the land near Squancom that passed down to his sons Annaniah and Joshua).

Annaniah GIFFORD was listed in 1748 as a freeholder in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, (Annaniah GIFFORD).

Annaniah GIFFORD was not listed in not 1755 as a freeholder in Monmouth Co, NJ.

Annaniah GIFFORD filed an inventory of the estate of Joseph JEFFERY on 26 Apr 1755 in Monmouth Co, NJ.49

Annaniah GIFFORD was mentioned in a boundary when Stephen FRAZEE and his wife Hannah sold Shrewsbury (now Brick) Tp, Monmouth (now Ocean) Co, NJ, to Joshua GIFFORD on 23 Mar 1769, south side of Manasquan River, recorded 28 Jul 1800, the original deed was clarified on 29 Sep 1770, it included land "where the said Joshua Gifford and his father now dwells", Joshua was called Joshua Jr. singleman.48

Annaniah GIFFORD's 3 sons were born soon after his marriage, with no breaks in dates for another son to have been born. It is unusual that none of these 3 sons were named after possible GIFFORD grandfathers. Maybe the original Annaniah GIFFORD had a 4th son named Annaniah who was the father of Annaniah 1703. Or maybe Annaniah 1703 had a son William by an earlier wife.

Mary HALSTEAD was born on 11 Nov 1705 probably Hempstead, Nassua Co, NY.47 She probably died before 29 Sep 1770 in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.48

Known children of Annaniah3 GIFFORD and Mary HALSTEAD were as follows:

8. Joshua3 GIFFORD (William2, Annaniah1) was born in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. He married Hannah DEAN, bond posted on 5 Apr 1740 in Monmouth Co, NJ.50 He died shortly before 26 Feb 1793 in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.51

Joshua GIFFORD is placed as a son of William because he named his oldest son William, and because he had at least one grandson named Benjamin, and because Jonathan of Little Egg Harbor (grandson of William) named one of his sons Joshua. Joshua was a very rare name in early Monmouth County.

Joshua GIFFORD was listed in 1748 as a freeholder in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, (Joshua GIFFORD).

On 24 Nov 1750, Joshua and Hannah GIFFORD were baptized as adults into Christ Church in Shrewsbury. Also baptized at the same time were 3 of their children: Ann (age 8 years and 10 months), William (age 7 years and 5 months), and Joseph (age 1 year and 7 months). Their 4th child, Annaniah, was baptized on 23 Sep 1755, presumably as an infant. At that time, the family was listed as living in Shark River, probably near the present-day town of Belmar.15

Joshua GIFFORD was not listed in not 1755 as a freeholder in Monmouth Co, NJ.

Joshua GIFFORD witnessed the will of Annaniah GIFFORD dated 25 Mar 1753 Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.52

Joshua GIFFORD witnessed the will of Hugh JACKSON dated 16 Apr 1760. He filed an inventory of the estate of Hugh JACKSON on 30 May 1760 Monmouth Co, NJ.53

Joshua GIFFORD appeared in the tax ratables for Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, between 1779 and 1789 (50 acres of improved land).54

Joshua GIFFORD left a will dated 21 Dec 1790 (the will mentioned wife Hannah, daughter Anne Davis, sons William, Joseph, Annaniah, three sons were named as executors). An inventory of the estate of Joshua GIFFORD was filed on 26 Feb 1793 in Monmouth Co, NJ, by Benjamin JACKSON and Annaniah GIFFORD.51

Hannah DEAN died after Jun 1797 in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.54

There were DEANs in New Brunswick and Woodbridge, NJ.

Hannah (DEAN) GIFFORD appeared in the tax ratables for Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, between 1794 and 1797 (householder with no land).54

Known children of Joshua3 GIFFORD and Hannah DEAN were as follows:

9. Benoni (Benjamin)3 GIFFORD (William2, Annaniah1) was born in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. He died (maybe) after 16 Jan 1762.

Benoni GIFFORD's mother probably died giving birth to him. "Ben Oni" means "son of my affliction" in Hebrew.41

Benoni (Benjamin) GIFFORD and Peter PARKER bought land in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, from William GIFFORD on 3 Mar 1739/40 (a 1/128 part of 1/24 of East New Jersey, recorded Liber AB, page 16, William was described as "formerly of Manasquan but now of Egg Harbor" and as the "undoubted heir of Hananiah Gifford").41,17

Benoni (Benjamin) GIFFORD was listed in 1748 as a freeholder in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, (Benjamin GIFFORD).

Benoni (Benjamin) GIFFORD was not listed in not 1755 as a freeholder in Monmouth Co, NJ.

Benoni GIFFORD was mentioned as a boundary in a survey of land on the "north main branch of Raco Pond" on 16 Jan 1762. Boundary information, however, can be out of date.

Known children of Benoni (Benjamin)3 GIFFORD include:

10. Abraham3 GIFFORD (William2, Annaniah1) was born in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. He married Catharine LYNCH, bond posted on 1 Aug 1741 in Monmouth Co, NJ. He died between Summer 1789 and Summer 1794 in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.54

NOTE: Abraham may be a nephew of William instead of a son.

Abraham is listed as a son of William because there was a younger Abraham Gifford in Little Egg Harbor Township in the 1770s and because both the NEHGR article and The History of Little Egg Harbor have him as a brother to William and Benjamin. He could be a son of Sarah instead of Margaret because the name Abraham appears at most once in the descendants of Margaret's probable sons and also because he did not marry until 1741.

Abraham GIFFORD witnessed the will of Lewis MITCHEL dated 19 Feb 1772.55

Abraham GIFFORD appeared in the tax ratables for Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, between 1779 and 1789 (between 10 and 25 acres of land).54

In his will dated 10 Mar 1790, Samuel LEONARD mentioned his 30 acres of land on the Manasquan River, joining David KETCHAM and Abraham GIFFORD. David KETCHAM had sold his land in 1786, so the boundary information was out of date.56

Known children of Abraham3 GIFFORD and Catharine LYNCH were:

11. Obadiah3 GIFFORD (Joseph2, Annaniah1) was born in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. He probably died before the tax ratables started in 1779 in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.

Obadiah GIFFORD is placed as the son of Joseph mainly because he had a son named Joseph. He could be the son of William or John, but the name Obadiah never appears in the families of their probable descendants.

Obadiah GIFFORD was a chain bearer when land was surveyed for John FORMAN on 30 Sep 1747 in Monmouth County.

An Obadiah GIFFORD owned 20,000 acres on Hughes River in Harrison Co, WV, in 1797.

Known children of Obadiah3 GIFFORD include:

12. Annaniah3 GIFFORD (John2, Annaniah1) was born in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. He died shortly before 9 Jan 1758 near Kettle Creek, Monmouth (now Ocean) Co, NJ.

Annaniah is listed as a son of John for three reasons: 1) he had a son named John; 2) his cousin Annaniah was probably the son of William; 3) the names Stephen and Zilpha were rare in early Monmouth County and both appeared in Mary CAMMACK's mother's family (WEST).

Annaniah GIFFORD owned land at Kettle Creek which was surveyed on 6 Apr 1757.

Annaniah GIFFORD of Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, left a will dated 25 Mar 1753 (the will mentioned children Stephen, John, Zilphia, Hannah, Phebe, all under age).52 An inventory of the estate of Annaniah GIFFORD was filed on 9 Jan 1758 in Monmouth Co, NJ.52

Known children of Annaniah3 GIFFORD include:

13. Joseph3 GIFFORD ((William or Joseph or John)2, Annaniah1) was born maybe before 1712 in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. He died probably in Franklin Tp, Somerset Co, NJ.

In a Dec 1729 probate record, Joseph GIFFORD's father or uncle was referred to as Joseph Sr.29,25

Joseph GIFFORD witnessed the will of Anthony PINTARD dated 15 Aug 1743 Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.35

Joseph GIFFORD witnessed the will of Peter POMYEA dated 12 Jan 1756 Somerset Co, NJ.60

Joseph GIFFORD filed an inventory of the estate of William WOOD on 29 May 1759 in Somerset Co, NJ.61

By 1766, Joseph GIFFORD was the proprietor of a tavern at Six Mile Run, Franklin Tp, Somerset Co, NJ. He was still proprietor of the tavern when it was occupied by British troops during the Revolutionary War.62

Known children of Joseph3 GIFFORD include:

14. (Elisha's father)3 GIFFORD ((William or Joseph or John)2, Annaniah1) was born in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.

Known children of (Elisha's father)3 GIFFORD include:

15. (Esther KETCHAM's father)3 GIFFORD ((William or Joseph or John)2, Annaniah1) was born in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. He married Sarah. He died before 14 Jul 1760 in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.

Known children of (Esther KETCHAM's father)3 GIFFORD and Sarah are:

16. (Elizabeth TILTON's father)3 GIFFORD ((William or Joseph or John)2, Annaniah1) was born in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.

Known children of (Elizabeth TILTON's father)3 GIFFORD include:

17. (Timothy and James and Joseph's father)3 GIFFORD ((William or Joseph or John)2, Annaniah1) was born in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.

Known children of (Timothy and James and Joseph's father)3 GIFFORD include:

18. (South New Jersey)3 GIFFORD ((William or Joseph or John)2, Annaniah1).

19. Mary4 GIFFORD (William3, William2, Annaniah1) was born between 1735 and 1737 in Little Egg Harbor Tp, Burlington (now Ocean) Co, NJ. She married Jacob PETTIT on 20 Dec 1759.24 She died probably in Tuckerton, Little Egg Harbor Tp, Burlington (now Ocean) Co, NJ.

A probable son or grandson, Samuel PETTIT, was mentioned in the pension application for Hannah (PETTIT) ADAMS. He was living in Atlantic City in 1840.

Known children of Mary4 GIFFORD and Jacob PETTIT were:

20. Jonathan4 GIFFORD (William3, William2, Annaniah1) was born on 26 Apr 1739 in Little Egg Harbor Tp, Burlington (now Ocean) Co, NJ.26 He married Hannah JENNINGS, daughter of Thomas JENNINGS and Ann, in Dec 1759 (10 Dec or 20 Dec) in Little Egg Harbor Tp, Burlington (now Ocean) Co, NJ.26,77 He died on 29 Jul 1825 in Little Egg Harbor Tp, Burlington (now Ocean) Co, NJ, at age 86.

Jonathan GIFFORD appeared in the tax ratables for Little Egg Harbor Tp, Burlington Co, NJ, in 1773.42

Jonathan GIFFORD of Little Egg Harbor Tp, Burlington (now Ocean) Co, NJ, left a will dated 24 Mar 1823, with Jonathan OLIPHANT and Eayre OLIPHANT named as executor(s) (the will mentioned wife Hannah, son William, son Thomas, Thomas's son Isaac, son Jonathan, daughter Hannah PEACOCK, daughter Ann DUKEMINEER, daughter Catharine FEMULINER, granddaughter Elizabeth GIFFORD (daughter of son Joshua deceased), grandchildren by daughter Elizabeth CRAMER (deceased)). The will was proved on 13 Aug 1825 in Burlington Co, NJ.78

Hannah JENNINGS was born in Jan 1734/35 (17 Jan or 28 Jan) in Haddonfield Tp, Gloucester (now Camden) Co, NJ.24,26 She died on 16 May 1823 in Little Egg Harbor Tp, Burlington (now Ocean) Co, NJ, at age 88.24,26

Known children of Jonathan4 GIFFORD and Hannah JENNINGS were as follows:

21. Benjamin4 GIFFORD (William3, William2, Annaniah1) was born before 1748 in Little Egg Harbor Tp, Burlington (now Ocean) Co, NJ.79 He married Mary JOHNSTON, daughter of Joseph JOHNSTON and Sarah, bond posted on 16 Jun 1774 in Gloucester Co, NJ.40 He died shortly before 18 Mar 1799 in Port Republic, Galloway Tp, Gloucester (now Atlantic) Co, NJ.80

Benjamin may be a nephew of William instead of a son. He is placed as a son of William because the History of Little Egg Harbor has him there and because his children inherited land from him in Little Egg Harbor. But the names of Benjamin's children do not match up very well with the names of Jonathan's children.

Benjamin GIFFORD appeared in the tax ratables for (Great) Egg Harbor Tp, Gloucester Co, NJ, in 1773 (single man, Great Egg Harbor Tp included Galloway Tp in 1773).68

Benjamin GIFFORD served in the Revolutionary War as a Private from Gloucester Co.45

Benjamin GIFFORD appeared in the tax ratables for Galloway Tp, Gloucester Co, NJ, between 1781 and 1797 (householder from 1781 to 1792, 50 acres from 1793 to 1797).68

Benjamin GIFFORD has not been found yet in the 1793 census (this was a military census of males between the ages of 18 and 45 ... could pay to be exempt).

Administration of the estate of Benjamin GIFFORD was granted to Lionel GIFFORD on 18 Mar 1799 in Gloucester Co, NJ, with Jeremiah ADAMS and Isaac HIGBEE as fellowbondsman(men).81

Mary JOHNSTON was born in Galloway Tp, Gloucester (now Atlantic) Co, NJ. She died before 5 May 1806 in Gloucester (now Atlantic) Co, NJ.82

Annaniah GIFFORD left a will dated 23 Aug 1826, with William C. HOUGH named as executor(s) (the will mentioned son John GIFFORD, daughter Sarah HOLLEY, Noah HOLLEY, and unnamed children of son Annaniah GIFFORD). An inventory of the estate of Annaniah GIFFORD was filed on 17 Jul 1829 in Monmouth Co, NJ, by Joseph C. PATTERSON and William C. HOUGH. Administration of the estate of Annaniah GIFFORD was granted to John S. FORMAN on 18 Jul 1829 in Monmouth Co, NJ, (William C. HOUGH had refused to serve).86

The will was proved on 8 Jul 1775 in Monmouth Co, NJ.87

Known children of Annaniah4 GIFFORD and Mary HERBERT were as follows:

23. Joshua4 GIFFORD (Annaniah3, William2, Annaniah1) was born on 18 Aug 1738 (maybe Jun and maybe 1737) in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.47,92 He married Amy JOHNSTON as her first husband. He died on 30 Nov 1800 (maybe 1 Nov) in present-day Allaire, Shrewsbury (now Wall) Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.92,93 He was buried in Quaker Cemetery near Manasquan, Wall Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.92

There is conflicting evidence for the birth and death dates of Joshua GIFFORD. His gravestone says that he died 30 Nov 1800 at age 62-5-12. The Havens book says that he was born 18 Aug 1737 and died "the first day of November" 1800, but also quotes his grandson as saying that Joshua died in his 62nd year. Perhaps the age on the gravestone was hard to read and it should be 3 months instead of 5 months. Then both sources would agree on 18 Aug as his birthday. August would also make more sense if there had been an error due to the Quaker naming of months. 1738 wins 2 to 1 over 1737 as the birth year, and that year fits better with the birth dates of his nearest siblings. For his death date, perhaps "the first day" was misquoted and should be "the last day."

Joshua GIFFORD bought land in Shrewsbury (now Brick) Tp, Monmouth (now Ocean) Co, NJ, from Stephen FRAZEE on 23 Mar 1769 (south side of Manasquan River, recorded 28 Jul 1800, the original deed was clarified on 29 Sep 1770, it included land "where the said Joshua Gifford and his father now dwells", Joshua was called Joshua Jr. singleman).48

Joshua GIFFORD served in the Revolutionary War from Shrewsbury.57

Joshua GIFFORD appeared in the tax ratables for Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, between 1779 and 1797 (75 acres of improved land and 50 acres of unimproved land, listed as Joshua Jr. while older cousin was alive).54

Joshua GIFFORD bought land in Shrewsbury (now Wall) Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, from Samuel HARVEY on 3 Nov 1790 (north side of Manasquan River near Squancom, recorded Jul 1800).94

Joshua GIFFORD was a fellow bondsman for the administration of the estate of William GIFFORD on 14 Aug 1800 in Monmouth Co, NJ.

An inventory of the estate of Joshua GIFFORD was filed on 29 Dec 1800 in Monmouth Co, NJ, by Edward Patterson COOK and Ezekiel JOHNSTON (the final inventory was filed on 25 May 1801). Administration of the estate of Joshua GIFFORD was granted to Amy (JOHNSTON) GIFFORD on 24 Feb 1801 in Monmouth Co, NJ, with Stephen FRAZEE and Ezekiel JOHNSTON as fellowbondsman(men).95,96

In the Jul 1810 term of the Monmouth County Orphan's Court, Joshua GIFFORD's land was divided amog his 5 children, Annaniah GIFFORD, Amos GIFFORD, Joshua GIFFORD, Mary CONNETT (wife of Matthew), Sary GIFFORD. The minutes mention "Stephen Frazee and Amy his wife, late Amey Gifford, Admr. of Joshua Gifford, dec'd". Son Amos later bought out his siblings for most of the land south of the Manasquan River. Son Annaniah later bought out his siblings for the land north of the Manasquan River.97

Amy JOHNSTON was born on 10 Mar 1762 in New Jersey.92,88,98 Amy (JOHNSTON) GIFFORD married (second) Stephen FRAZEE, son of Stephen FRAZEE and Hannah GIFFORD. She died on 18 Dec 1851 in present-day Allaire, Wall Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, at age 89.92,93 She was buried in Quaker Cemetery near Manasquan, Wall Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.92

Amy (JOHNSTON) GIFFORD was probably closely related to the Ezekiel JOHNSTON mentioned in the probate records for her husband Joshua GIFFORD. Also, there was an Elisha JOHNSTON who married Amy DAVIS on 28 Oct 1755 in Monmouth County.

Amy (JOHNSTON) (GIFFORD) FRAZEE witnessed when Joshua GIFFORD sold land in Howell Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, to Annaniah GIFFORD on 4 May 1812.99,100

Stephen FRAZEE appeared in the 1830 US census in Howell Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, (Stephen FRAZEE, 1 male 0-5, 1 male 50-60, 1 female 60-70).

Stephen FRAZEE appeared in the 1840 US census in Howell Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, (Stephen FRAZEE, 1 male 70-80, 1 female 70-80).

Amy (JOHNSTON) (GIFFORD) FRAZEE appeared with James MILLS in the 1850 US census in Howell Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, (James MILLS 21, Anginette 22, Mary 3, Amy FRAZEE 88, all born NJ, next to Annaniah GIFFORD, James' age seems too low).

Known children of Joshua4 GIFFORD and Amy JOHNSTON were as follows:

24. Hannah4 GIFFORD (Annaniah3, William2, Annaniah1) was born on 26 Aug 1740 in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.47 She married Stephen FRAZEE, son of Stephen FRAZEE and Sarah ALLEN, on 19 May 1765 in Christ Church, Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.102 She died after 9 Jun 1797 in Howell Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.48

Stephen FRAZEE died after 9 Jun 1797 but before 3 Jun 1806 in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.103,48

Stephen FRAZEE and his wife Hannah sold land in Shrewsbury (now Brick) Tp, Monmouth (now Ocean) Co, NJ, to Joshua GIFFORD on 23 Mar 1769 (south side of Manasquan River, recorded 28 Jul 1800, the original deed was clarified on 29 Sep 1770, it included land "where the said Joshua Gifford and his father now dwells", Joshua was called Joshua Jr. singleman).48

Known children of Hannah4 GIFFORD and Stephen FRAZEE were as follows:

25. Ann4 GIFFORD (Joshua3, William2, Annaniah1) was born 7 Jan 1741/42 (maybe 17 Jan) in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. She was baptized on 24 Nov 1750 in Christ Church, Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.15 She married Nathan DAVIS, son of William DAVIS, bond posted on 20 Jan 1761 in Monmouth Co, NJ.40 She died on 14 Oct 1820 in Salem, Harrison Co, VA (now WV), at age 78.

Nathan DAVIS was born on 9 May 1740 in Westerly, NJ. He died shortly before 17 Oct 1814 in Salem, Harrison Co, VA (now WV).

Not too long after 28 Apr 1789, Nathan and Ann DAVIS moved to Harrison Co, VA (now WV), with the Seventh Day Baptists. Nathan had lost his Shrewsbury Tp land because of a bad debt.105,106

Nathan DAVIS has not been found yet in the 1790 census (the 1790 VA census was actually taken in 1782).

Known children of Ann4 GIFFORD and Nathan DAVIS were as follows:

26. William4 GIFFORD (Joshua3, William2, Annaniah1) was born circa Jun 1743 in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.15 He was baptized on 24 Nov 1750 in Christ Church, Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.15 He married Deborah. He died shortly before 14 Aug 1800 in Dover (now maybe Brick) Tp, Monmouth (now Ocean) Co, NJ.107

William GIFFORD served in the Revolutionary War as a Militia Volunteer prior to the first general militia muster in Jun 1776.57

William GIFFORD appeared in the tax ratables for Dover Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, between 1779 and 1797 (50 acres of land in 1779 and 300 acres of improved land later on).54

Administration of the estate of William GIFFORD was granted to Deborah GIFFORD on 14 Aug 1800 in Monmouth Co, NJ, with Joshua GIFFORD and John SHERMAN as fellowbondsman(men). An inventory of the estate of William GIFFORD was filed on 20 Aug 1800 in Monmouth Co, NJ, by Timothy PAGE and Nathaniel DICKENSON.107

In May 1802, William GIFFORD's youngest daughter and her husband bought out the four older siblings for the land they inherited on the north side of the Manasquan River about 2 miles above the old bridge. This land was right next to land sold by William's brother Joseph in 1812. The land was originally purchased by William's father before 1767.108

Deborah died after 31 Mar 1808.108

Deborah GIFFORD and Mary GIFFORD witnessed when Benjamin GIFFORD, Joshua GIFFORD, Elizabeth (GIFFORD) PHILLIPS and Hannah (GIFFORD) HAGERMAN sold land in Howell Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, to John SHERMAN on 31 May 1802.108

Deborah GIFFORD may be the 70-80 year-old female living with John and Hannah HAGERMAN in the 1830 census.

Known children of William4 GIFFORD and Deborah were as follows:

27. Joseph4 GIFFORD (Joshua3, William2, Annaniah1) was born circa Apr 1749 in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.15 He was baptized on 24 Nov 1750 in Christ Church, Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.15 He married Achsa HOLLOWAY (probably HOLLOWAY), daughter of John HOLLOWAY and Constant HANCOCK, before 2 May 1783.109 He died after 28 Apr 1812.110

Joseph GIFFORD served in the Revolutionary War as a private in the Militia.57

Joseph GIFFORD appeared in the tax ratables for Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, between 1779 and 1797 (householder until 1786, 30 or 35 acres of improved land from 1789 on).54

Joseph GIFFORD appeared in the 1793 NJ census in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, (this was a military census of males between the ages of 18 and 45 ... could pay to be exempt).79

Joseph GIFFORD and his wife Achsa sold land in Howell Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, to William GRIFFITH on 23 Apr 1812 (an undivided half of land on north side of Manasquan River inherited from Joshua GIFFORD, recorded 29 Apr 1812, it is not known if Joseph owned the other undivided half or if it belonged to one of his brothers).110

Joseph and Achsa GIFFORD probably moved about 1812, but no further information has been found.

Achsa HOLLOWAY (probably HOLLOWAY) died after 28 Apr 1812.110

Known children of Joseph4 GIFFORD and Achsa HOLLOWAY (probably HOLLOWAY) were:

28. Annaniah4 GIFFORD (Joshua3, William2, Annaniah1) was born in 1755 near Shark River, Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.15 He was baptized on 23 Sep 1755 in Christ Church, Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.15 He married Lydia FREEMAN, daughter of Asel FREEMAN and Mary MORRIS. He died shortly before 24 Apr 1815 in Ovid, Seneca Co, NY.111

Annaniah GIFFORD served in the Revolutionary War as a private in the Militia. He also labored intermittently from Aug 1776 to June 1777 in the Pennsylvania Salt Works.57

Annaniah GIFFORD appeared in the tax ratables for Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, between 1779 and 1797 (householder until 1786, 50 acres of improved land from 1794 to 1797, listed as the son of Joshua from 1779 to 1781 ... printed accounts of the tax ratables show his entry as "son of John", but the original record in Trenton has "son of Joshua").54

Annaniah GIFFORD appeared in the 1793 NJ census in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, (this was a military census of males between the ages of 18 and 45 ... could pay to be exempt).79

Annaniah GIFFORD and his wife Lydia moved shortly before 1809 to Seneca Co, NY.

Annaniah GIFFORD bought land in Ovid, Seneca Co, NY, from Jonathan STOUT on 2 Sep 1809 (52 acres, lot 100, recorded 17 Sep 1811, Annaniah was listed as from Ulysses).112

Annaniah GIFFORD appeared in the 1810 US census in Ulysses Tp, Seneca Co, NY, (Ananiah GIFFORD, 1 male age 16-26, 2 males age 26-45, 1 male age 45+, 2 females age 0-10, 1 female age 45+, the town of Ovid was in Ulysses Township).

Administration of the estate of Annaniah GIFFORD was granted to Joshua GIFFORD on 24 Apr 1815 in Seneca Co, NY, (Annaniah was listed as "late of Ovid" and Joshua was listed as from Ovid, the petition for probate mentioned "wearing apparel of Lydia Gifford" and "property left to the little girls").111

On 11 Nov 1818, the Sheriff of Seneca County sold an undivided 5/7 of the 52 acres that had belonged to Annaniah GIFFORD. The land was sold for payment of debts of Lewis HALSEY and Luther S. JAGGER. One of the other 1/7 portions had been sold by Asel F. GIFFORD in 1817. No land record has been found for the remaining 1/7.

The fact that the above land was divided into sevenths indicates that Annaniah probably had 6 sons and the 2 young daughters (at that time daughters usually received a half share). This agrees nicely with a family legend that 4 brothers moved West (John and Asel staying in Monmouth Co).

Lydia FREEMAN was born on 22 Jan 1761 in Monmouth Co, NJ.64 She died after 24 Apr 1815.

Known children of Annaniah4 GIFFORD and Lydia FREEMAN were as follows:

29. William4 GIFFORD (Benoni (Benjamin)3, William2, Annaniah1) was born in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. He married Margaret MEIRS, bond posted on 11 Feb 1763 in Monmouth Co, NJ, (fellow bondsman Daniel KETCHAM).

William GIFFORD is listed as the son of Benoni (Benjamin) because he was probably born too early to be the son of Abraham. Benjamin and Abraham are the only GIFFORDs listed as freeholders in 1748 who could be the father of William. William's father, however, could have died before 1748.

The William GIFFORD who married Margaret MEIRS in 1763 may not be the William GIFFORD of Deerfield. But there is good circumstantial evidence that they are the same person. William of Deerfield had a son named Job and a grandson named Joshua. William who married Margaret MEIRS had a brother named Job and an uncle named Joshua. Job and Joshua were fairly rare names back in early NJ. Also, no records for William and Margaret have been found in Monmouth Co after their marriage.

William GIFFORD of Deerfield could be the same person as the William GIFFORD of Springfield.

William GIFFORD appeared in the tax ratables for Deerfield Tp, Cumberland Co, NJ, in 1773.

William GIFFORD has not been found yet in the 1793 census.

Margaret MEIRS was probably a sister of John MEIRS of Dover Township.

Known children of William4 GIFFORD and Margaret MEIRS were as follows:

30. Job4 GIFFORD (Benoni (Benjamin)3, William2, Annaniah1) was born in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. He married Mary JEFFERY, daughter of John JEFFERY and Elizabeth ALLEN, as her first husband. He died probably between 1797 and 1805 in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.

Job GIFFORD is listed as a son of Benoni/Benjamin because he had a son named Benjamin.

Job GIFFORD probably married Mary JEFFERY. Mary was married to a GIFFORD in 1798 and to Robert MORRIS in 1806. Job is the only known GIFFORD of the right age who could have died before 1806 and whose wife is otherwise unknown.

Job GIFFORD appeared in the tax ratables for Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, between 1779 and 1797 (21 acres of improved land).54

Mary JEFFERY was born in the mid to late 1750s in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. Mary (JEFFERY) GIFFORD married (second) Robert MORRIS between 1798 and 1806.

Known children of Job4 GIFFORD and Mary JEFFERY were:

31. John4 GIFFORD (Benoni (Benjamin)3, William2, Annaniah1) was born in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. He married Mary JACOBS, daughter of Jacob JACOBS and Hannah JOHNSON, in Monongalia (now Harrison) Co, VA (now WV). He died on 19 Oct 1825 in Harrison Co, VA (now WV).

DNA testing of living descendants of John GIFFORD has shown that he was a great-grandson of the original Annaniah GIFFORD of Monmouth Co, NJ. John is listed as a son of Benoni/Benjamin for the following reasons: 1) Mary JACOBS parents were married in Monmouth Co, 2) Benjamin is the best fit among the names of John's oldest sons, 3) John had a son named Job, 4) John had a daughter named Margaret.

Members of the JACOBS family lived in Mason Co, KY (see Elisha GIFFORD) and Adams Co, OH (see Peregrine Pickle GIFFORD).

John GIFFORD appeared in the 1790 US census in Monongalia Co, VA, (John GIFFORD, 5 people, this census was actually taken in 1782 and Harrison Co was not created until Jul 1784).

John GIFFORD appeared in the 1810 US census in Harrison Co, VA, (John GIFFORD, 1 male 0-10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-26, 2 males 45+, 1 female 0-10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 26-45, 1 female 45+, indexed as John GEFFERS).

John and Mary GIFFORD were probably living with their son William in Harrison Co, VA, at the time of the 1820 census.

Mary JACOBS was born on 14 Dec 1761 in Monmouth Co, NJ. She died on 24 Mar 1825 in Harrison Co, VA (now WV), at age 63.

Known children of John4 GIFFORD and Mary JACOBS were as follows:

32. Joseph O.4 GIFFORD (Obadiah3, Joseph2, Annaniah1) was born before Apr 1749 in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. He married (first) an unknown person before 1779. He married (second) Mary BREWER on 5 Jul 1797 in Methodist Episcopal Church, Monmouth Co, NJ. He died shortly before 22 Mar 1813 in Freehold Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.

Joseph O. GIFFORD was born before Apr 1749 because his cousin Joseph GIFFORD (born about Apr 1749) was listed as Jr. in the tax ratables.

Joseph O. GIFFORD appeared in the tax ratables for Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, between 1779 and 1797 (between 8 and 12 acres, listed as the son of Obadiah).54

Administration of the estate of Joseph O. GIFFORD was granted to Mary (BREWER) GIFFORD before 22 Mar 1813 in Monmouth Co, NJ, (the date was listed as on or before 22 Mar 1813). An inventory of the estate of Joseph O. GIFFORD was filed on 22 Mar 1813 in Monmouth Co, NJ, by William LIPPINCOTT and John LIPPINCOTT. John LIPPINCOTT was/were appointed guardian(s) of Elizabeth GIFFORD, the minor child(ren) of Joseph O. GIFFORD, on 30 Jan 1817 in Monmouth Co, NJ.

There were no known children of Joseph O.4 GIFFORD and the unknown spouse mentioned above.
Known children of Joseph O.4 GIFFORD and Mary BREWER are:

33. Zilpha4 GIFFORD (Annaniah3, John2, Annaniah1) was born in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. She married Joseph BURDGE, son of Jonathan BURDGE and Mary ELLISON, as his first wife on 23 Jan 1765 in Christ Church, Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, (bond posted 21 Jan in Monmouth Co). She died between 1773 and 1776 in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.

A Zilpha GIFFORD and William LEA posted a marriage bond on 1 Jun 1763 in Monmouth Co. Was this the same Zilpha, or was it a cousin of hers?114

The children below are all listed with Zilpha GIFFORD as their mother, but if Joseph had a second wife Anne, one or two of the children were probably by Anne.

Joseph BURDGE married (second) Anne (or was Anne a nickname for Zilpha?). He died shortly before 27 Aug 1782 in Dover Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.

Joseph BURDGE was named executor in the will of John GIFFORD dated 2 Apr 1773 (the will mentioned wife Lydia, nephew John BURDGE (son of Joseph BURDGE Jr.), sisters Zilpha, Hannah, Phebe).

Joseph BURDGE of Dover Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, left a will dated 18 Aug 1777 (the will mentioned wife Anne, daughters Sarah, Mary, Hannah, Zilpha (at least 3 under age), sons Nathan and John (both under 14), "legacy left to my son John by his uncle John Gifford", Joseph was referred to as Joseph Jr). The will was proved on 27 Aug 1782 in Monmouth Co, NJ.115

Known children of Zilpha4 GIFFORD and Joseph BURDGE were as follows:

34. Hannah4 GIFFORD (Annaniah3, John2, Annaniah1) was born in Shrewsbury Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. She married Joseph BARTLETT, son of Joseph BARTLETT, bond posted on 5 Apr 1766 in Monmouth Co, NJ.117

Joseph BARTLETT was born probably in Stafford Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ. He died on 7 Dec 1788 in Stafford Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ.118

Joseph BARTLETT was named executor in the will of John GIFFORD dated 2 Apr 1773 (the will mentioned wife Lydia, nephew John BURDGE (son of Joseph BURDGE Jr.), sisters Zilpha, Hannah, Phebe).

Joseph BARTLETT of Stafford Tp, Monmouth Co, NJ, left a will dated 24 Feb 1777, with Nathan BARTLETT and Hannah (GIFFORD) BARTLETT named as executor(s) (the will mentioned wife Hannah, son John (under 21), daughters Phebe (under 18), Mary (under 18), Rachel, Mabel, brother Nathan Bartlett, Joseph was referred to as Jr). The will was proved on 18 Mar 1789 in Monmouth Co, NJ.119,120

Known children of Hannah4 GIFFORD and Joseph BARTLETT were as follows:

35. Isaac4 GIFFORD (Joseph3, (William or Joseph or John)2, Annaniah1) was born on 19 Apr 1745 in New Jersey.122 He married Elizabeth.123 He died on 31 Aug 1823 in Tell Tp, Huntingdon Co, PA, at age 78.124 He was buried in Upper Tuscarora Presbyterian Cemetery, Lack Tp, Juniata Co, PA.124

Isaac GIFFORD is placed as a son of Joseph GIFFORD because he was from Piscataway, NJ.

Isaac GIFFORD supposedly moved about 1765 from Piscataway, NJ, to the Black Log Mountain area of South Central Pennsylvania. However, the death record for his son Joseph says that Joseph was born in 1769 in New Jersey. And census records show that his son Isaac was born in 1772 in New Jersey. Isaac probably moved to Pennsylvania about the time of the Revolutionary War, maybe to keep his family away from the fighting.125

Isaac GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Fannett Tp, Franklin Co, PA, in 1786 (Fannett Tp was right near what became Huntingdon Co in 1787).126

Isaac GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Huntingdon Co, PA, in 1788.127

Isaac GIFFORD appeared in the 1790 US census in Huntingdon Co, PA, (Isaack GIFFORD, 3 males 16+, 1 female).

Isaac GIFFORD appeared in the 1800 US census in Dublin Tp, Huntingdon Co, PA, (Isaac GIFFORD, 2 males 26-45, 1 male 45+, 1 female 45+).

Isaac GIFFORD appeared in the 1810 US census in Dublin Tp, Huntingdon Co, PA, (T.? GIFFORD, 1 male 45+, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 45+).

Isaac GIFFORD appeared with Isaac GIFFORD in the 1820 US census in Tell Tp, Huntingdon Co, PA, (Isaac GIFFORD, 3 males 0-10, 2 males 45+, 4 females 0-10, 3 females 10-16, 1 female 26-45, 1 female 45+).

DNA testing of living descendants of Elisha GIFFORD has shown that he was a great-grandson of the original Annaniah GIFFORD of Monmouth Co, NJ. Because he gave one of his sons the unusual name Timothy, he was probably closely related to James and Timothy and Joseph GIFFORD of Gloucester Co, NJ.

In 1818, Annaniah and Phebe GIFFORD moved West, first to Newtown, Hamilton Co, OH, and then to Harrison Tp, Fayette Co, IN. They probably moved to Fayette Co just before the 1820 census because their daughter was married in Hamilton Co on 23 Feb 1820. Some sources say they moved West as early as 1815, but their son Manly was born in New York in Sep 1816 and the Tompkins Co, NY land records also indicate a later move.148,149,150

Joshua GIFFORD may have used the middle initial A. In 5 deeds from 1825, 1828, 1830, all involving Annaniah and Elizabeth GIFFORD, the witness was a Joshua A. GIFFORD. Joshua (born 1787, son of Joshua) was the only known adult Joshua GIFFORD living in Monmouth County in the 1820s. But when this Joshua was born, most people did not have middle names. If there was any confusion, a person was referred to either as Sr. or Jr., or with the middle initial of their father's name. So who was this Joshua A. GIFFORD? Could it possibly have been the minor son of Annaniah and Elizabeth? Or maybe Amos (born 1734) lived to adulthood and had a son named Joshua. No records have been found for this Amos GIFFORD or to indicate that there were any other Joshua GIFFORDs.
