Most researchers who have studied the GIFFORD family have come across the work of Almon E. Daniels and Maclean W. McLean which appeared in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register from October 1974 through July 1984. This excellent article did a thorough job of following the descendants of William GIFFORD of Sandwich, MA ... EXCEPT FOR THE NEW JERSEY LINE. The authors studied Annaniah Gifford, but relied on someone else for information on his descendants. The New Jersey GIFFORDs were only followed a couple of generations, and some of Annaniah's grandsons and great-grandsons were misplaced on the family tree.
This website is an attempt to complete the work started by Daniels and McLean. It hopefully will also help correct a lot of the erroneous data floating around the Internet. The information presented here can be freely copied by genealogy researchers as long as two guidelines are followed: 1) give me credit if my narrative is copied, 2) relationships or dates that are not definite should be labeled as such and not as fact. THE INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THESE WEB PAGES MAY NOT BE REPRODUCED IN ANY FORMAT FOR PROFIT.
I have been researching the New Jersey GIFFORDs for over 25 years. But there are still a few broken branches in the family tree. Comments, corrections, and additions from other researchers would be greatly appreciated. Help is especially needed in South Jersey, where not nearly as much work has been done.
Future enhancements to this website will include another generation, more source information, actual source text, and a list of researchers. If you would like to be added to a list of Monmouth County GIFFORD researchers, send me an E-mail (address at bottom of this page). Specify whether the listing should include your E-mail address or regular address or both. Also include your connection to the GIFFORD family.
