History: Conceived in the Winter of 2003, Surf World Culture began as an informal group of surfers from Southwestern College and the South Bay communities of San Diego County. By February 2004 SWCSurf.com was launched, providing a resource of surfing articles, photos, and online discussion for its loose band of members. Currently, SWCSurf.com is listed on all major Internet search engines and receives traffic in upwards of 400 page loads per day with visitors as far away as China and Tahiti.
Mission: To cultivate diversity in surfing by promoting the ethnic origins & contributions to the sport. By engaging the ethnic community in the lifestyle of surfing, we hope to alter surfing’s future to one which is more inclusive of minorities and return the aloha spirit to the sport.
What We Do: SWCSurf holds several different functions each month. Besides getting together every Saturday morning (usually at Silver Strand), we hold large potluck picnics, barbeques, movie outings, camping trips, surf trips, snorkeling/spear fishing trips, buffet lunches, hula lessons, and parties. We attempt to do these activities as cost effectively as possible so everyone can enjoy. Our last surf/camping trip was to K-58, Mexico at the cost of $7/night + the food you bring! Several of us reduced this cost even more by carpooling and sharing tents. A trip to Hawaii is being planned for 2005!!!
Who We Are: SWCSurf members are of varying ages, come from diverse backgrounds and are from all different walks of life. Students, professionals, mothers, fathers, and children of all different surfing levels. Often referred to as “our little surf family,” each of us gives from the heart and shares eagerly. The atmosphere of the gatherings is one in which you can relax, hang loose, and just enjoy.
Why Isn’t SWCSurf College Chartered?
SWCSurf is comprised of former students and members of the community. It is also assumed that current students will move on and no longer be students of Southwestern College. These members might not have a voice in SWCSurf’s direction if it were chartered.
Are You Against a College Chartered Surf Club?
SWCSurf is not against the idea of a college chartered surf club since the driving principle behind the clubs would differ. We believe that the continued presence of the Silver Strand Aquatic Center and Southwestern College surfing classes helps us as surfers, increases our membership, and furthers our goals. Also, SWCSurf looks forward to working with a college chartered surf club just as we have regularly done with groups such as SD Beginning Surfers.
