Introduction to Training
The Boy Scout program offers a wide range of
training opportunities for adult leaders. Some of the
training is meant for every adult. Other training is
designed for adults who will become Scout leaders. Still
other training is more specialized. For example, adults
can take Backpack Awareness Training to learn how to lead
Scouts on high adventure trips.
Detailed information about Adult training
can be found at the website provided by the Orange County
Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The website
includes descriptions of the training and dates when training
when training will be offered. Simply click
here to
visit that site. Once there, simply explore the Training
link at the top of the page.

Introductory Training
We recommend that every adult view the
Fast Start Video and take Youth Protection Training.
Fast Start Video
This is a video (approximately
one-hour long) that is intended to
acquaint every adult with basic
information about scouting and how a scout troop
operates.
The Troop has a copy of the video.
Once or twice a year, we show it at a Parents' Meeting.
Alternatively, the training is now
available online at the OCBSA site (just click
here).
Youth Protection Training
This is an outstanding program we
strongly recommend. It provides information about
how to recognize, prevent and respond to suspected child
abuse. This training must be renewed every three
years. The training takes about 90 minutes and is
offered every month at the LDS Church in Irvine.
Alternatively, it can be taken online at the OCBSA site
(just click
here) and navigate from
the Training link at the top of the page to Youth
Protection Training. If you are taking the
training for the first time, it is recommended that you
take it live.

Scout Leader Training
Every adult who will become an Adult
leader must complete Scout leader training.
Previously Scout leader training was
called Scout Adult Leader Training (SALT). That
training has been modified somewhat and replaced by the
training described below. Adults who have
completed SALT within the past five years, however, do not have to take the new
training.
New Leader Essentials
This is a 90-minute
introductory session that highlights the values, aims,
history, funding, and methods of Scouting. Each leader completes
New Leader Essentials training only once.
Scoutmaster & Assistant Scoutmaster Training
This
training (3 sessions of about 2.5 hours each) concentrates on troop
operation.
Troop Committee Member Training
This training takes about 3 hours.
Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills
This
training focuses on outdoor skills through 1 1/2 days of
training (including an
overnight campout).

Special Training
Safety Afloat & Swim Defense
A Scout leader who has completed Safety
Afloat training must be present at every Scout water activity.
Backpack Awareness Training
This training is meant to prepare Scout
Leaders for planning and enjoying safe High Adventure outings
including backpacking, hiking, skiing, climbing, camping,
canoeing and bicycling. The course consists of 20 hours of
classroom training followed by two field exercises, a day hike
and an overnight hike, to demonstrate and practice the skills
taught in the classroom. The classroom
training is usually given on a single weekend starting Friday
night, continuing all day Saturday and into the evening, and
ending Sunday morning. CPR & First Aid Training
CPR and First Aid Training is offered by the
Red Cross and can be completed in one day.
