The Hauger Family

John Hager emigrated to America at an early date. He was born in Germany in 1749 and died 6 Dec 1813.. He settled on a farm at Beechdale about 3 miles east of Berlin, Somerset Co., PA. He married Maria Barbara Miller who was a native of the eastern part of PA. Maria Barbara Miller told her descendants of Indian uprisings around her childhood home. During an Indian uprising when Maria Barbara was about seven years old, some Indians came to her home while her father was away. Upon his return he was scalped and killed by the Indians in the presence of his family. The Indians took the mother, a baby in arms, her five year old brother and Maria Barbara as captives. The mother and baby were separated from the two older children and never heard from again. Maria Barbara and her brother were held for several years and then released. The brother later disappeared and never returned. It is believed that he may have gone back to the Indians.
