Important Information

Americal/Gryphon Decals are no longer in business. I'm keeping this page on-line for historical purposes. You may be able to find sheets on ebay, or through some other source, but as A/G is no longer in business, you will NOT be able to find new sheets direct from them.

AMERICAL/GRYPHON DECALS

GENERAL

AMERICAL/GRYPHON DECALS is a small company dedicated to providing quality decals for serious modellers, especially those of aircraft of the Great War period, 1914--18. Our production is small, specialized and cost- and labor-intensive. We strive to produce the most historically accurate products that our extensive research will permit.

GUARANTEE

AMERICAL/GRYPHON products are fully guaranteed to the extent that we will refund or replace any decals purchased from us with which the customer is dissatisfied upon their return. We think that the discriminating modeller will compensate for any minor flaws resulting from our small-scale, limited-run, printing.

ORDERING INFORMATION AND PAYMENT

Decals should be ordered from the address shown on the order blank. Price information is shown on our order blank. Payment (in advance) may be made by cash (sender’s risk), personal check, or money order. We do not accept credit cards. Payment by cheque in £ Sterling or in EUROs should be made payable to Glen K. Merrill. All checks in U.S. funds should be made payable to AMERICALS. Due to excessive bank charges we reserve the right to return checks drawn on overseas banks without U.S. routing codes. We regret that we cannot accept checks in currencies other than those listed. Please do not send things to us by registered mail. These usually necessitate special trips to the post office to recover them with a round trip distance of about ten kilometres.

POSTAGE, TAX, AND METHOD OF SHIPPING

Orders received without postage are returned unfilled. Postage rates are listed on our order blank. All U.S., Canada, and Mexico shipments go by First Class Mail or equivalent. Overseas shipments are usually by small packet air. Texas shipments are subject to current state sales tax as also shown on our order blank. Our policy is not to ship goods until payment is received, a copy of the receipt for the purchase of an IMO or similar notwithstanding. From some countries an IMO may take up to 90 days to reach us. This delay explains why we hold foreign orders until payment is received; we would have to do major back-checking to match payments with filled orders. Shipment is normally within seven days after receipt of payment.

Americal/Gryphon No. 1 Scale 1:72   Kriegsmarine Camouflage 1917-18

Description: Nine strips of decal film representing bolt widths of fabric preprinted with hexagons in the two combinations of colors known to have been used on German naval aircraft during the last two years of the war; violet-gray/medium blue/dark blue and violet-gray/medium blue/darkbrown. This sheet contains more than one hundred metres of fabric in scale.

Application: Most seaplanes that served in the 1917-18 period including single-seaters by Albatros, Hansa-Brandenburg, Rumpler, and Sablatnig and two-seaters from Friedrichshafen, Hansa-Brandenburg and others. Even the floatplane version of the Zeppelin Staaken (83-series) was mostly covered with this fabric.

Americal/Gryphon No. 2 Scale 1:72   Nachtbombengeschwader Camouflage 1916-18 (I)

Description: A continuous sheet of hexagons printed in four colors representing the painted pattern of regular hexagons seen on some German night bombers in the mid-war years.

Application: This was the most common scheme applied to A.E.G. G.IV bombers. It was also used on the A.E.G. N.I and similar schemes are seen on all or part of the airframe of many of the L.V.G.-and S.S.W.-built Gotha G.IV bombers as well as one Staaken R.V.

Americal/Gryphon No. 3 Scale 1:72   Nachtbombengeschwader Camouflage 1917-18 (II)

Description: A continuous sheet of irregular polygons printed in five colors representing the irregular painted patterns seen on some Staaken aircraft in mid-war and later years.

Application: We no longer recommend this sheet for aircraft other than the Staaken for which it was intended. Although it is true that some contractors painted somewhat more regular polygons on the Staaken R.VI aircraft they built, none was truly regular and this sheet remains reasonable in color and accurate in pattern for the majority of Staaken R.IV and R.VI bombers.

Americal/Gryphon No. 4 Scale 1:72   Nachtbombengeschwader Camouflage 1917-18 (III)
Americal/Gryphon No. 5 Scale 1:72   Five-color Lozenge Camouflage 1917-18 (top)
Americal/Gryphon No.6 Scale 1:72   Five-color Lozenge Camouflage 1917-18 (bottom)

Description: Each of these sheets bears eight strips of decal film representing preprinted fabric bolts with irregular polygons (lozenges) in five colors. One set of colors (No. 4) is the darkest and was intended as night camouflage. The darker of the two remaining (No. 5) was generally used on upper and side surfaces of day-flying aircraft and the lightest set (No. 6) was generally used on ther lower surfaces of the same aircraft. The colors used are the product of more than thirty years of research by a large number of researchers.

Application: In later 1917 and 1918 almost all aircraft flown by the Germans were covered with preprinted fabric. Although some were more likely seen in four-color fabric (Americal/Gryphon No. 37 - No. 38), most were covered all or in part with this fabric at one time or another.

Americal/Gryphon No. 16 Scale 1:72   German Rib Tapes 1917-18

Description: This sheet contains numerous strips of narrow decal film in two colors representing the dyed strips of cloth used to cover ribs, leading and trailing edges and some seams on German preprinted fabric during the final two years of the war. These strips are in grayish blue and rose violet. There is more than a kilometre of tape in 1:72 scale.

Application: Although there were numerous variations on the theme, the grayish-blue tapes were normally used with the top five-color ( Americal/Gryphon No. 5 ) and four-color ( Americal/Gryphon No. 37 ) fabric as well as marine fabric ( Americal/Gryphon No. 1 ). The rose-violet tapes were normally used with bottom fabrics either five-color ( Americal/Gryphon No. 6 ) or four-color ( Americal/Gryphon No. 38 ) fabric as well as night five-color fabric ( Americal/Gryphon No. 4 ). The alternate four-color top ( Americal/Gryphon No. 25 ) and alternate five-color bottom ( Americal/Gryphon No. 45 ) presumably used the grayish-blue and rose-violet tapes respectively.

Americal/Gryphon No.17 Scale 1:72   ältere Eiserne Kreuze 1914-16

Description: This sheet contains eight styles of plain black crosses without white outlines. They range in size from 25 mm down to 5 mm. There are more than 160 crosses on this sheet. The "standard" 1916 style cross is the most common on the sheet.

Application: Although stated to be for aircraft of the 1914-16 period, there were aircraft such as the Pfalz D.III/IIIa that bore these crosses into 1918. These are designed to be applied to a wide range of Central Powers aircraft that either had light-colored finishes (clear-doped linen, varnished plywood, pale gray, pale blue, Silbergrau , etc.) or that bore crosses on more or less square white fields (such as the Fokker Dr.I well into 1918).

Americal/Gryphon No. 18 Scale 1:72   British Roundels (Larger Aircraft) 1914-18

Description: This sheet contains white outlined and unoutlined British cockades with separate centers, some A.E.F. Cockades in British colors, three widths of rudder stripes, and a collection of Union Flags. The cockades range in diameter from 28 mm down to 5.2 mm. There are 72 cockades on this sheet.

Application: These cockades are designed to fit Short 184, D.H. 10, D.H. 9a, Martinsyde Elephant, B.E. 2-series, D.H.4, D.H.9, F.2B, F.E.-series, Sopwith 1½ Strutter, Sopwith Baby, Sopwith Pup, R.E.8, and S.E.5/5a among others.

Americal/Gryphon No. 19 Scale 1:72   British Roundels (Smaller Aircraft) 1914-18

Description: This sheet contains white outlined and unoutlined British cockades with separate centers, some A.E.F cockades, a small amount of rudder stripe, and six Union Flags. Some of the unoutlined cockades are in French proportions. The cockades range in diameter from 20 mm down to 7.5 mm. There are 80 cockades on this sheet.

Application: Cockades on this sheet are designed for the Sopwith Snipe, Vickers Gunbus, SPAD XIII, D.H. 9, D.H. 6, AVRO 504, D.H. 2, Bristol M.1C, Bristol Scout, D.H. 5, Sopwith Camel, Sopwith Dolphin, SPAD VII, and Nieuport 17/23/24/27 among others.

Americal/Gryphon No.20 Scale 1:48   Five-color Lozenge Camouflage 1917-18 (top)
Americal/Gryphon No. 21 Scale 1:48   Five-color Lozenge Camouflage 1917-18 (bottom)

Description: Each of these contains six strips of decal film representing bolt widths of preprinted cloth in darker and lighter sets of colors used for five-color "lozenge." These sheets are in all respects comparable to Americal/Gryphon No. 5 and No.6 respectively except in 1:48 scale.

Application: As for sheets No. 5 and No. 6.

Americal/Gryphon No. 22 Scale 1:48   German Rib Tapes 1917-18

Description: Printed stripes of the two colors known to have been used by Germans for the predyed tapes used to cover rib stitching (in addition to those made from strips of the lozenge fabric). This sheet is similar to Americal/Gryphon No. 16, but in 1: 48 scale.

Application: To be used with four- or five-color day lozenge top and bottom (Americal/Gryphon Nos. 20 , 21 , 39 , 40 ); night five-color lozenge ( Americal/Gryphon No. 27 ), naval hexagonal camouflage ( Americal/Gryphon No. 14 ) and alternate four- and five-color lozenges (Americal/Gryphon Nos. 46 , 60 ) on a wide variety of models.

Americal/Gryphon No. 23 Scale 1:72   Gotha Lozenge, 1917-18
Americal/Gryphon No. 24 Scale 1:48   Gotha Lozenge, 1917-18

Description: A sheet of continuously printed irregular polygons of appropriate sizes and colors known to have been painted on at least some of the Gotha bombers, either covering the entire airframe, or used in conjunction with printed night five-color lozenge ( Americal/Gryphon Nos. 4 , 27 ) on the flying surfaces. Fabric samples from two different machines were used giving different base blue colors and rather different final appearances.

Application: In the appropriate scales these sheets are appropriate for the Gotha G.V, G.V.a, and G.V.b aircraft models. With careful planning it is thought that two sheets will cover a Gotha G.V airframe in 1:72 scale and three sheets in 1:48 scale.

Americal/Gryphon No. 25 Scale 1:72   Alternate Four-Color Lozenge Camouflage 1917-18 (top)

Description: Six strips of decal film representing bolts of cloth preprinted in one of the combinations of four colors known to have been used to camouflage the top and side surfaces of some aircraft.

Application: The fabric portrayed by this decal sheet was known to have come from a "Fokker," with little doubt a D.VII. Based on examination of many photographs, it is thought to have most likely been used on early Fokker-built D.VIIs, although use by other manufacturers and on other types of aircraft cannot be ruled out. No comparable variation for a different bottom fabric is known. For example of the pattern see Americal/Gryphon Nos. 37 , 38 , 39 and 40.

Americal/Gryphon No. 26 Scale 1:72   Suomalaiset Kansallistunnukset 1918

Description: This sheet contains blue swastikas without backgrounds, as well as ones printed on white squares and disks from 22.5 mm down to 6.8 mm. Most are right-facing as appropriate for Finnish aircraft in 1918, but a few left-facing ones are included.

Application: These insigne are designed to be used with the Thulin D - equivalent to a Morane-Saulnier L, Albatros B-types, D.F.W. C.V, Nieuport 10, Friedrichshafen FF.33, Nieuport 23, Nieuport 16, Rumpler 6B, and Rumpler C.VIII, although application to others among the diverse types operated by the early Finnish Air Force is possible.

Americal/Gryphon No. 27 Scale 1:48   Nachtbombengeschwader Camouflage 1917-18 (III)

Description: This sheet is presented in the same fashion as Americal/Gryphon Nos. 20 , 21 , and is a 1:48 scale equivalent of Americal/Gryphon No. 4.

Application: This camouflage is appropriate for many of the later German G.-types that had this night five-color lozenges at least on their wings, but also on other, fabric-covered, portions of the airframe. These would include later aircraft built by Gotha, Friedrichshafen, A.E.G., and Staaken. It was also used on the relatively rare N.-type aircraft from A.E.G. and others.

Americal/Gryphon No. 28(R) Scale 1:72   Die Markierungen der Kanonenstaffel: Königliche preußische Jagdstaffel Fünf

Description: This sheet contains the personal markings for more than 30 Albatros aircraft flown at different times by personnel of Jagdstaffel 5. It also contains Albatros logos, serials, weight tables (several kinds), and several kinds of propeller logos. Information and materials are presented to build a diorama of the famous lineup photographed in August 1917. Sheet completely revised and printed using new artwork in 1995.

Application: These decals are appropriate for 1:72 scale models of Albatros D. III, D.V (mostly), and D.Va aircraft.

Americal/Gryphon No. 29, 30, 31 Scale 1:72   Balken Kreuze 1918

Description: The crosses illustrated above have been designated (by us), from left to right, with the Greek letters rho ( r), sigma ( s ), tau ( t ), upsilon ( u ), phi ( j ), chi ( c ), psi ( y ), and omega ( w ). These designations are for communication only and having no bearing on what the Germans may have called the individual styles (if anything). Sheet No. 29 contains styles rho, sigma, tau and upsilon in sizes ranging from 35.0 down to 7.0 millimetres. Sheet No. 30 contains styles phi, chi and psi in sizes from 34.5 mm down to 5.5 mm. Both of these sheets will permit marking models of a wide range of aircraft that flew during the period when Eiserne Kreuze were being replaced with "transitional" Balken Kreuze and indeed, some of these flew to the very end of the war. Some were field modifications of the earlier style crosses, but others were painted at the factory. Sheet No. 31 carries the omega style, the "ultimate" style cross standardized by the Germans in June 1918 and marked most aircraft from then until the Armistice. These omega crosses range in size from 35.0 down to 5.5 millimetres.

Application: The largest crosses on these sheets are intended for the Hansa-Brandenburg W.29 and the smallest is the Fokker Dr. I with the dozens of crosses fitting just about everything in between.

Americal/Gryphon Nos. 32, 33, 34 Scale 1:48   Balken Kreuze, 1918

Description: These three sheets are essentially 1:48 equivalents of sheets Nos. 29, 30 and 31, respectively, although clearly with fewer crosses, a more restricted range in sizes and aircraft covered, and somewhat less selection of sizes within a style. The ranges in sizes are 52.5 down to 10.5 mm (No. 32), 42.0 down to 11.25 mm (No. 33), and 52.5 down to 11.25 (No. 34). Note that crosses on 33 and 34 maintain their correct proportions when employed on models of other scales so these have possible application on very large 1:72 scale models or perhaps on smaller 1:32 or 1:28 models. The same principle applies to the 1:72 scale sheets Nos. 30 and 31.

Application: As for sheets Nos. 29, 30 and 31, these cover the same wide range of sizes, and, although fewer rare types are included, these sheets are applicable to nearly all the significant aircraft types in the range of sizes given for sheets Nos. 29, 30 and 32.

Amercal/Gryphon Nos. 35, 36 Scale 1:48   British Roundels 1914-18

Description: These two sheets are the 1:48 equivalents of sheets 18 and 19 , respectively and cover generally the same ranges of aircraft. The roundels on sheet No. 35 range in diameter from 33.75 down to 9.0 millimetres and those on sheet no. 36 from 30.0 down to 14.25 millimetres. Both sheets contain both white outlined and unoutlined roundels and sheet No. 36 also contains roundels in French proportions.

Application: These sheets are applicable to a wide range of British aircraft from those with wing chords as great as a D.H. 4 down to that of an S.E. 5/5a on sheet No. 35 and from wing chords of Snipes and SPAD XIIIs down to that of a Sopwith Triplane on sheet No. 36.

Americal/Gryphon No. 37 Scale 1:72   Four-color Lozenge Camouflage 1917-18 (top)
Americal/Gryphon No. 38 Scale 1:72   Four-color Lozenge Camouflage 1917-18 (bottom)

Description: Eight strips of decal film printed in the darker set of colors for top (and generally side) camouflage (No. 37) and a similar set in lighter colors for the bottom sides of German aircraft in the 1917-18 period. These are the "standard" colors seen on so many kinds of aircraft and were printed in the same pattern as the alternate top scheme ( Americal/Gryphon No. 25 ).

Application: This is probably the most widely used of all the "lozenge" schemes of preprinted, camouflaged fabric, being dominant on Fokker-built aircraft and those of many other manufacturers as well. Although recourse to photographs is essential to determine the correct scheme, this is the one most probably correct if no other information than that the machine was "lozenge-covered" is available.

Americal/Gryphon No. 39 Scale 1:48   Four-color Lozenge Camouflage 1917-18 (top)
Americal/Gryphon No. 40 Scale 1:48   Four-color Lozenge Camouflage 1917-18 (bottom)

Description: Each of these sheets has six strips of decal film in all ways identical to sheets Nos. 37 and 38 , respectively, but being in 1:48 rather that 1:72 scale.

Application: As above.

Americal/Gryphon No. 41 Scale 1:48   Nachtbombengeschwader Camouflage (I) 1916-18

Description: A continuous sheet of hexagons printed in four colors representing the regular painted hexagonal camouflage scheme in common use on German night bombers in mid-war years. It is a 1:48 equivalent of Americal/Gryphon No. 2 (see description of that sheet for pattern information).

Application: This scheme is certain for many A.E.G. G.IVs and very probable for L.V.G.- and S.S.W.-built Gotha G.IVs as well.

Americal/Gryphon No. 42 Scale 1:48   Eiserne Kreuze 1914-18 (Smaller Aircraft)
Americal/Gryphon No. 43 Scale 1:48   Eiserne Kreuze 1914-18 (Larger Aircraft)

Description: These were the most common national insignia to appear on Central Powers aircraft during the Great War, standardized in Germany in late 1916 where they remained standard until April 1918. Appearance and disappearance of these thinly outlined "Iron Crosses" was somewhat later in Germany’s eastern allies. Each sheet contains a large number of crosses with (in scale) 50 mm white outlines. Those on the sheet for larger aircraft fit wing chords ranging from 31.5 mm to 36.0 mm and those on the sheet for smaller aircraft range from 21.0 to 20.0 mm.

Application: The sheet for larger aircraft covers mostly two-seaters and most German and Austro-Hungarian two-seaters are covered by decals on this sheet, including the Albatros B/C-series, A.E.G., D.F.W., and Rumpler C-series along with the Hansa-Brandenburg W.12 and most Friedrichshafen seaplanes and many others. The sheet for smaller aircraft covers most single-seaters, just about all the single-seaters that bore this style of cross, but also some smaller two-seaters are covered such as the Roland C- and Halberstadt C- and CL-series.

Americal/Gryphon No. 44 Scale 1:48   K.U.K. Tarnstoff 1917-18

Description: Six strips of hexagons in varying widths in the three combinations of colors known to have been used to camouflage some Austro-Hungarian aircraft late in the war. This sheet is a 1:48 equivalent of Americal/Gryphon No. 13 ).

Application: See the Application for No. 13.

Americal/Gryphon No. 45 Scale 1:72   Alternate Five-color Lozenge Camouflage
Americal/Gryphon No. 46 Scale 1:48   Alternate Five-color Lozenge Camouflage

Description: Seven and nine (1:48 and 1:72 scales, respectively) strips of camouflage fabric printed in the standard five-color pattern (see Americal/Gryphon Nos. 4 , 5 , 6 , 20 , 21 , 27 ), but in a variant set of colors. Caveat : the authenticity of the source information upon which these were based has recently come into question.

Application: These colors would appear to have been alternative for the bottom scheme and supposedly came from the rudder of an Albatros D.V/Va.

Americal/Gryphon Nos. 47, 48 Scale 1:48   A.E.F. Cockades 1917-18

Description: Two sheets of A.E.F. Cockades in 1:48 scale. The first sheet contains cockades with the blue shade being that of R.F.C. blue as was almost certainly used on aircraft purchased from Great Britain such as Camels and S.E. 5as. Cockades and rudder stripes in appropriate sizes for those aircraft as well as the J.N. 4, D.H. 4, Thomas-Morse Scout and Hanriot are present as well as star and circle markings for "Jennies," D.H. 4s, and "Tommies." In most respects this sheet is a 1:48 equivalent of the few cockades included on Americal/Gryphon Nos. 18 , 19 . The second sheet employs French bleu de cocarde for its blue as was actually used on the majority of aircraft operated in combat by U.S. forces. Aircraft covered include Bréguet, Salmson, SPAD VII, SPAD XIII, Nieuports 17-28, and Hanriot. Also included are some for "Tommies" and D.H. 4s that may be appropriate for some American-built aircraft.

Americal/Gryphon No. 49 Scale 1:48   Belgische Kokarden 1914-18

Description: A sheet of red-yellow-black cockades in both 1-2-3 and 1-3-5 proportions with rudder stripes for Belgian WWI aircraft. The cockades range in diameter from 37.5 down to 12.0 mm. This is a 1:48 scale equivalent of Americal/Gryphon No. 9.

Application: This sheet is designed for the following aircraft: Farman 7/11, 20/22, Voisin L, SPAD VII, SPAD XIII, Camel, Hanriot, and Nieuport 11-17. Once again, the large sizes and constant proportions of the cockades make them potentially useful on a wide range of models in other scales as well.

Americal/Gryphon No. 50 Scale 1:48   Le Coccarde Italiane 1915-18

Description: A sheet of cockades with green and red outer rings, in both proportions 1:2:3 and 1:3:5, with rudder stripes, for Italian WWI aircraft. In all respects this is a 1:48 scale equivalent of Americal/Gryphon No. 10. The diameters of cockades range from 30 mm down 12 mm.

Americal/Gryphon Nos. 51, 52 Scale 1:72   Gotha markings, parts a and b

Description: These are the second and third special marking sheets from Americal/Gryphon. Sheet a contains individual markings, specialized national insigne, serials and component markings to build any of 19 specific Gotha bombers. Variable components can be used for the basic markings of any Gotha- or S.S.W.-built aircraft in the G.III through G.V range. Sheet b is similar, but contains individual markings for 29 Gothas, component markings and individual serials for Gotha- and L.V.G.-built machines in the G.II through G.V.b range, serials to build any L.V.G.-built G.IV , and specialized national insigne.

Application: Most of the aircraft covered are G.IVs, but G.Vs can easily be converted, and G.II and G.III conversions are equally easy. Conversions of G.V.a and G.V.b designs involve more laborious conversions.

Americal/Gryphon No. 53 Scale 1:72   Eiserne Kreuze 1916-18 (smaller aircraft)
Americal/Gryphon No. 54 Scale 1:72   Eiserne Kreuze 1916-18 (larger aircraft)

Description: Sheet No. 53 is a 1:72 scale equivalent of Americal/Gryphon No. 43 and sheet No. 54 is a 1:72 scale equivalent of Americal/Gryphon No. 42. Each sheet contains more crosses covering a greater range in sizes, of course, than its 1:48 scale counterpart. Sheet No. 53 is intended for models with wing chords up to 20 mm and sheet No. 54 for those greater than 20 mm, There are approximately 120 crosses on sheet No. 53 and approximately 200 on sheet No. 54. All of these crosses have the standard white outlines used from 1916 to 1918 by the German air services and somewhat later on Austro-Hungarian aircraft.

Application: Although other insignia were in use, for the period of late-1916 through early 1918, these crosses were the most common insignia-type used by the Central Powers and the range of sizes presented on these two sheets will permit accurately marking 1:72 scale models of aircraft ranging in size from the Fokker Dr.I (14.0 mm upper wing chord) up to the Friedrichshafen G.III (wing chord 24.0). Also included are "fat" crosses seen on L.F.G. (Roland) aircraft.

Americal/Gryphon No. 55 Scale 1:48   Turkish Insignia 1917-18

Description: This sheet contains a large number of black squares of varying sizes, most of them surrounded by white outlines, white stars and crescents on red fields, and arabic numerals 1 through 0.

Application: The black squares were used on Turkish aircraft from whatever source, including captured aircraft such as Bristol and Nieuport fighters. The most commonly used aircraft by the Turks were the Albatros C.III, Halberstadt D.-series, A.E.G. C.IV, Fokker E.III, and Albatros D.III. All these, as well as other types known to have been operated by the Turks, are covered on this sheet. The stars and crescents as well as the arabic numerals are intended for use on Gotha WD.2 and WD.13 seaplanes.

Americal/Gryphon No. 56 Scale 1:72   Brumowski Distribution

Description: This sheet consists of printed blocks of colored patterns to be applied to various parts of models. These include ochre sworls to be applied to wings and tailplane of Hansa-Brandenburg D.I models, and blocks with two different shades of green backgrounds with ochre sworls and splotches to cover wings, tailplane, fuselage top and wheel disks of Oeffag-built Albatros D.III aircraft. There are also blocks of ochre sworls and splotches without backgrounds and a block of dark green matching the darker green patterned background.

Application: These decals are designed to be applied to 1:72 scale models of Hansa-Brandenburg D.I and Albatros D.III fighters to represent the camouflage patterns applied to some of those aircraft, possibly at the direction of Hptm. Godwin Brumowski, but certainly used by his his Flik 41J as well as other Austro-Hungarian units.

Americal/Gryphon No. 57 Scale 1:72   Other Rib (+) Tapes
Americal/Gryphon No. 58 Scale 1:48   Other Rib (+) Tapes

Description: Each sheet contains numerous narrow printed strips, some black in two widths, others pale buff or straw in color.

Application: These are intended for use, in the case of the narrower black strips, on the early German aircraft, such as those built by Pfalz, that had black rib tapes. The wider black strips represent the tapes used to reinforce seams and protect corners of fabric-covered fuselages. Again, the German Pfalz firm followed this practice, but so did some French firms like Morane-Saulnier. The buff-colored tapes are intended to represent clear-doped linen tapes that can generally be distinguished on any wings, top or bottom, or both, that were finished with clear dope because the tapes are usually slightly darker than the remainder of the wing. These tapes have wide application, not the least being on the underside of the wings of British aircraft painted in P.C. 10 except for the lower surfaces.

Americal/Gryphon No. 59 Scale 1:48   Brumowski Distribution

Description: This sheet is a 1:48 scale equivalent of Americal/Gryphon No. 56, except that the larger format only permits blocks that can cover a pair of Oeffag-built Albatros D.III fighters, one with the lighter green background, and one with the darker.

Application: As for sheet No. 56, but in 1:48 scale.

Americal/Gryphon No. 60 Scale 1:48   Alternate Four-color Lozenge Camouflage

Description: Each sheet contains six strips of decal film and utilizes the pattern and color scheme found on sheet No. 25, but in 1:48 scale.

Application: As for sheet No. 25.

Americal/Gryphon No. 79 Scale 1:48   ältere Eiserne Kreuze (VII), 1916 style, smaller aircraft

Description: Each of these sheets contains a large number of crosses; ranging from 54 on sheet No. 73 to 90 on sheet No. 75. These all represent cross styles employed prior to the practice of outlining the 1916 style cross with a 50 mm surround (those crosses are covered on sheets 42 and 43). Several different styles of crosses and manner of presentation are present on these sheets. Styles include highly curved and wasp-waisted early crosses, two styles of crosses whose arms are triangles, highly curved crosses for wheel disks, highly curved crosses that are not as wasp-waisted as the first, group and finally, the 1916 style and proportion of crosses without surrounding white outlines. Types of presentations include plain black crosses, black crosses on square white fields, and black crosses in square white "boxes" where the ends of the cross arms coincide with the edges of the "box." Many types of aircraft bore one or another of these cross types and note that, because many of these do not have scaled components, they could be applied to models in other scales in addition to the intended 1:48. Sizes of wing chords for which these sheets were designed are (in millimetres): No. 73 = 42.0 - 30.0, No. 74 = 42.0 - 33.0, No. 75 = 30.0 - 27.0, No. 76 = 33.0 - 30.0, No. 77 = 30.0 - 28.0, No. 78 = 30.0 - 27.0, and No. 79 = 27.0 - 19.5.

Application: Examples of aircraft to which these crosses might be applied include: No. 73 - Early Albatros B.- C. types, Early D.F.W. B.-C. types, Rumpler Tauben ; No. 74 - Albatros C.I, Aviatik B.-C. types, Rumpler Tauben , Knoller, Fokker E.-series, Pfalz A.-series; No. 75 - A.E.G. Early B.- C. types, A.G.O. C.I-IV, D.F.W. G.-types; G.II (8), G.III (15), G.IV (24), G.IVb (3), G.IVk (3), and G.V (2) aircraft for a total of 56 aircraft on the three 1:72 sheets and the same 56 aircraft on the six 1:48 sheets. Types are evenly divided among the three 1:72 sheets (with 19, 19, and 18 aircraft, respectively). Each of the 1:48 sheets depicts nine or ten aircraft with the a sheets having the earlier variants (G.II - G.IV) and the b sheets having the later ones (G.IV - G.V). The 1:72 and appropriate 1:48 sheets also contain specialized nose/nacelle camouflage seen nowhere else than transitional A.E.G. G.IV aircraft (transitional between painted and printed schemes and not previously reported). Each sheet is accompanied by profiles showing the correct placement of the markings and a 19-page instruction book tracing the development of A.E.G. bombers, their camouflage and markings, and their employment.

Application: Conversion of kits of A.E.G. G.IVs to G.II or G.II configuration should be simple. Conversion to G.IVb, G.IVk, or G.V configurations will not be as simple, but can produce some striking variants.

Americal/Gryphon No. 101 Scales 1:72 and 1:48   Gotha Markings (X)

Description: This sheet attempts to do several things. First, it provides corrections and supplements to the original Gotha 1:72 sheets ( Nos. 51 and 52 ). Next, it provides the basic markings, component markings, and unusual national insigne, for nine aircraft in both 1:72 and 1:48 not covered on sheets Nos. 51 and 52 nor on their 1:48 equivalents (Nos. 97 , 98 , 99 , 100 ). In addition to the original 17-page booklet, this sheet has a separate decal sheet with serials and stencils in both scales, and a 6-page set of text and profiles showing these nine aircraft, supplementary information about markings on this sheet for aircraft portrayed on sheets Nos. 51 and 52 as well as information about the later Gotha development. The nine aircraft newly portrayed include three G.IIIs, three G.Vs, one G.V.a, and two G.V.bs.

Application: Conversion of a Gotha G.IV or G.V kit to G.III configuration is a simple conversion (as is G.IV to G.V or the reverse). Conversion to G.V.a or G.V.b configuration is considerably more complex.

Americal/Gryphon No.102 Scale 1:48   Russkie Kokardy (1914-17)
