Stump Horn and family (Cheyenne), ca. 1871.  David I. Bushnell took this photograph of Stump Horn and his family. The Plains Indians moved their belongings through the use of travois (small ones, at first, attached to dogs or wolves, then larger ones attached to ponies and called pony-drags). A cage provided a safe means to transport young children.  [Photograph courtesy of the National Archives and Records Administration]
