April 2007 Outing On April 14th we will go to the Lower Illinois River and fish the Watt's property which the OWD recently acquired. Meet at 8am to begin fishing by @ 8:15am ... bring a sack lunch and drink to meet and eat at the parking area for a lunch and trading stories of the morning, before heading back to fish some more. To get there Is a bit tricky. As you follow highway 100 from Gore toward the dam, at about the half way point, look for a rusty Phillip's 66 sign on the left side of the road and turn right and follow the road (E0990 but I am not sure whether it is marked or not) to where it ends at the old Watt's house. Below is a link for a Google map (the building with the green roof is the Watts house). By using the navigation buttons, zooming in and out and switching from satellite view to map, and so on, you should be able to get a good idea of the lay of the land. http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=k&om=1&z=18&ll=35.580464,-95.066602&spn=0.002072,0.003 616 If you are a beginner and would like some help please contact any member of the board (see club contacts below) and we will arrange for someone to get you started. PROGRAM The February Speaker will be: Steve Dally, Lead Guide at Beaver Dam Store, Beaver Lake tailwater, Northwest Arkansas. He will be speaking on fishing the Beaver Tailwater and how regulations have added to the quality of fishing in that area. Check out his website: http://beaverdamstore.com/ FUND RAISER Cabelas Ripcord™ Duffel Bag is rugged and roomy enough to take anywhere. It has a durable, heavy 1000-denier nylon bottom that's both wear and water-resistant. The tops are constructed of a durable 600-denier poly ripstop fabric. Plus, each bag has heavy-duty No. 10 main zippers and No. 8 zippers on the front pockets for rugged dependability. The beefed-up carrying straps are fortified with 3" webbing with matching wrap hand grips to make them comfortable to carry when fully loaded. Zippered front pocket keeps items handy and secure. A padded shoulder strap with metal hardware is included. Large: 30"L x 13"W x 13"H March 2007 A Message from your Trout Unlimited President: Your 2007 Banquet and Fund Raiser, declaring "Dave & Emily Whitlock Day in Oklahoma" was a fantastic success. If you missed it, then you missed out on great food, terrific fellowship, and a wonderful program by Dave and Emily Whitlock. (Not to mention the fact that you missed some great opportunities on bargains from area businesses, trips and the chance of a lifetime on a great Orvis Bamboo Fly Rod. The winner, Johnny Bellmyer of Claremore, OK, bought 3 tickets for $25 and went home with a fly rod most of us will only dream of ever owning.) Overall, our efforts netted over $15,000. This money, when attached to state and federal grants for fish habitat improvements on the lower Illinois River could very well total more than $45,000 ! I'd like next, to thank all those that attended! Without your support of the event, by your attendance, we could never have them. Thanks everyone for coming! Secondly, I'd like to thank Dale Deuvall and Fred Kirk for being our co-chairmen for the event. They worked tirelessly on it for over three months. Please tell them each "Thank You" the next time you see them, they both deserve it. A special thanks to Keith Yarger for giving of his time, to take your calls to get a ticket and to keep track of all that went on that night. It ran very smooth and we all thank him for those efforts. Next, to the rest of the Board of Directors of Tulsa FlyFishers ... you all did a great job, thanks for your investment of money (you know who you are), and for the personal investment of your time. Finally, to all you bidders in both the silent and live auctions. Thanks for bidding. It's a shame when someone donates and the item they gave goes for less than the value ... we had very few items that fell in this category, some I'm happy to say, even went for greater value ... that's real giving and we all thank you for those bids. See you all on the river! FISH ON! Scott Hood President Trout Unlimited Oklahoma Chapter #420 PS We are already preparing our first in a series of donations to the OWD to get things moving on the new Watt's property on the Lower Illinois River. ( the new "Lost Creek" was stocked for the firt time on January 17th) People may want to get a jump on reservations in the area... ( spring break) Roaring River Outing Saturday Jan.27. A note from Joel: Friends- I want to thank everyone who brought food and family fun to the 2007 brisket lunch on Roaring River. Everyone had a good time and it is clearly a testoment to the friendships which continue to be made through the two organizations. I could not be more proud of our group. I look forward to doing it again next year, Joel Kantor ******************* Over 22 people attended the outing and although the weather was overcast and cold, I think a good time was had by all. As usual the food was a great great. Joel Kantor provided his wife's excellent brisket and beans and thanks also to all who brought food. Penny's gumbo was a hit, as well (also her fire tending, it sure felt good to stand by the fire, as the wind seemed to pick up just in time for lunch). I also had a first (landing my 2nd only trout, and all by myself). This is not something you are taught in kindergarten. It was a fun and also somewhat traumatic event. When I got the fish back in the water he just laid there. I thought for sure I had killed it and could see the park ranger taking me away in handcuffs, since this is only catch and release season at Roaring River. Forutnately, even though the fish had been dumb enough to get on my line (I sure didn't set the hook) he was hardy enough to quickly recover and swim away. Jan. 2007 PROGRAM Speaker will be Mike Niher from Crazy Mikes Fishing. He will be showing pictures of each Riffle on the White River between Bull Shoals Dam and Cotter, Ark., and the best access to each one. If you want to know more about this section of the White, this is a meeting to not miss. FUND RAISER The fund raiser prize at the meeting will be a ticket to the Banquet on Febuary 24th to hear Dave Whitlock. OUTING TO ROARING RIVER STATE PARK SATURDAY JANUARY 20, 2007 The Jan. outing will be at Roaring River State Park near Cassville, Mo. On Saturday the 20th. Joel Kantor will provide brisket and hopefully sweet hot pickles (aka Karen's killer dillers). In past years others have brought plates, napkins and bread, cookies, beans and other condiments, to round out the menu. Bring the beverage of your choice and a dish to share with others. Let us know what you intend to bring at tffstreamline@cox.net and we'll put it on the TFF home page. WWW.tulsaflyfishers.com For those who don't like to get up early accommodations are available at Roaring River Resort, located at the north entrance of the park, http://www.roaringriverresort.com/ 1-800 693-2792, winter rates are room $42, room with kitchenette $52 and there are several other motels in the Cassville area. We will meet at streamside for lunch, look for the banner. Don't forget during the winter months, Roaring River State Park has its catch and release Trout fishing program on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for those who love to fish. "The winter catch and release season is great for the serious fly fisherman", said Tim Homesley, owner of Tim's Fly Shop. Anglers can catch bigger fish on a river that is less crowded, and the fish strike more aggressively during the winter months," he added. The catch-and-release season was expanded in 2006 to include Mondays. Catch-and-Release Season 2nd Friday in Nov. through the 2nd Monday in February (Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday only) Beginning Time: 8 a.m. Ending time: 4 p.m. Dinner in Bartlesville About 16 of us made it to Sterling's Restaurant. We had a great meal and an enjoyable evening with about 30 or so GreenCountryFlyFishers. Marc Pinsel, the featured speaker, gave us a rundown of FFing Louisiana south of Interstate 10, not to mention cajun food and hospitality. He told of some of the events and outings that the Baton Rouge area FFers participate in, put on by RedStickFlyFishers, and of the newly formed Gulf Coast FFF Council with their upcoming conclave in Lake Charles in May. The evening was concluded with a raffle of an Orvis reel, donated by Marc, followed by drawing for member-donated door prizes. (You can download a copy of the entry form from our web page, or just send in your $10.00 fee and a note stating that you want to take part in the Fishing Challenge. You can bet that Kevin Blankenship wished he'd have signed up BEFORE he hooked into a 50lbs.+ spoonbill two weeks ago and subsequently landed it! You could bet good money that his fish would have easily won this first phase of both biggest and most unique and then gone on to perhaps even win the Grand Champion prize as well. Participants can mail your entry fee or entry pictures to: Scott Hood 9 Royal Dublin Ln. Broken Arrow, OK 74145 or bring them to the TFF meetings. Good luck to those who have already signed up and a BIG "com'on everyone sign-up" to the rest of you! It's for a great cause! MARCH, 2006 NEWSLETTER March Speaker: Kim Erickson, Chief, Fisheries Division, Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation will speak. Mr. Erickson will address our Chapters recent letter to him asking for a change in the fishing regulations on portions of the Lower Illinois River. In addition, Mr. Erickson will bring us up-to-date on ongoing projects concerning the Lower Illinois. This is an opportunity to discuss our cares and concerns with Mr. Erickson. TFF TIERS AT BASSPRO SHOP Eight fly tyers demonstrated their craft Thursday evening in the fly shop at BassPro. Participants were Mike Shuman, Fred Kirk, Ed Kessey, John Johnson, John Sherman, Steve Crosby, Scott Hood, and Jerry Christopher. WINTER FISHING CHALLENGE The TFF Winter Fishing Challenge winners were announced at Thursdays joint meeting of TFF and TU. They were Mike Scott and Scott Hood. Mike Scott won both the BIGGEST FISH and the BIGGEST TROUT categories with his 20.5 x 13.5 inch Rainbow Trout caught at Tanneycombo in mid-November. Scott Hood won the BIGGEST BASS with his 14 x 9 inch Bass caught in a Coweta farm pond on Oct. 30, 2005. Thanks to all that participated in the Winter 2000-06 Fishing Challenge. We raised $90 total for the effort. All proceeds from the Challenge will go towards habitat inprovements on the Lower Illinois River. The public is welcome to attend. PROGRAM The February Speaker will be: Steve Dally, Lead Guide at Beaver Dam Store, Beaver Lake tailwater, Northwest Arkansas. He is originally from Tasmania and will do a slide presentation on fishing those waters as well as other areas of the world. FUND RAISER The fundraiser for this month will be a half price guided trip for two from Gabe Cross. You may visit Gabe's web site at www.arkansastrophytrout.com . The March fundraiser will be the Gene Wheeler fly tying table which has been donated to the club to use as a fundraiser prize again. Roy Plum made this most generous gesture. Roy told me he was a fly tier, but he already had a table and wanted to donate his prize to the club. We raised nearly $200 in the fundraiser, and hopefully can match that number when we use the table once again! Many thanks to Roy. FEBRUARY OUTING Picnic on the lower Illinois River on Saturday Feb. the 11th. Bring your lunch and join us for a day of fishing this well stocked trout river. People in Europe pay big bucks to fish streams that are not nearly as good as this. We are fortunate to have such great trout fishing only an hour and a bit from Tulsa. Agenda: show up, fish, gather for lunch, fish. Lower Illinois map http://www.tenkiller.net/lowermap.htm. Meet where the map shows "park and pubic access" in the upper left. Scott Hood reports that: "FYI, Fishing on the lower Illinois is incredible right now. Low water and now no releases for an extended period of time ( almost 10 days) and a recent stocking of 1,000s of 6 to 8 inch German Browns will keep you VERY busy. It's a great time for the inexperienced fly fishers to learn ... if you use a strike indicator it's especially easy right now to see a strike... if you are a line watcher or fish by feel it is also a great time to learn... these little guys will hit just about anything including a strike indicator. They also will show you what flies they like best ... I fished with the "green weenie" fly last weekend and had a strike on every cast, in fact numerous strikes on every cast ... into the same water with a few of my other offerings I did not do as well. Perfect learning environment." To see the green weenie click on: http://www.tenkiller.net/lowermap.htm. Special Fishing Survey It has come to the TU / TFF clubs attention from the OWD that the release of German Brown fingerlings is done in hopes of establishing a German Brown fishery in the lower Illinois. The fish are given to the state for free when rearing pen populations at hatcheries are to great and when new pen spaces are required for future orders. With this information and the fact that the state has released many thousands of these fish in past years we were wondering if the plan the OWD has is working? By state regulation all German Browns under 20 inches must be released when caught in the lower Illinois River. We'd like to know if any members have caught German Browns in the lower Illinois River. The survey questions being ... 1. Have you every caught German Brown Trout in the lower Illinois River? yes? no? 2. If so, were any of them over the 20 inch minimum? yes? no? 3. If yes, how many? When? 4. Have you ever caught German Browns over 12 inches in the lower Illinois River? yes? no? 5. If yes, how many? When? 6. Please add any other comments you'd like regarding this survey and forward your answers and observations back for computations. Thanks for you assistance in this survey. Watch the March newsletter for results. We will let you know if we think that the OWD plan for establishing a German Brown Fishery on the lower Illinois River is working. Thanks for your help. The public is welcome to attend. This month's program features Gabe Cross, a full time guide on the White River. You may visit Gabe's web site at www.arkansastrophytrout.com . I e-mailed Gabe to ask what he was going speak on, and received the following reply. "Basically, I am going to "open the vault" so to speak and try and show your membership the best ways to catch trout on the White and Norfork...including some guarded secrets. Slides will be a small part of the presentation, but primarily I want to talk candidly about these fisheries and I want to allow plenty of time for questions. Also, if time permits, I'm willing to tie a few of the best patterns either before or after the meeting." Fund Raiser During the months of January through March, we will be selling tickets for a great fundraiser. The "Fly Tyer's Hobby Niche" was graciously donated by member Jim Thomas. This table may be flush mounted in the wall between studs or surface mounted against the wall. The table surface folds down and out. There is pegboard in the back with hooks for hanging tools, etc. This stained oak table would be a beautiful addition to any tyer's room. The lake must be 12+ feet down. Dinner The annual dinner we share with the Bartlesville club was fun for all. About sixty-five people attended with a good showing from Bartlesville in spite of the weather. The food was good and the bar kept busy. Many nice gifts were given as door prizes with a fine fly rod for the fundraiser winner. Thanks to all who worked so hard to make the dinner a big success. PROGRAM The guest speaker for May 10 is Ken Richards Ozark area guide and he will be giving his new multi-media presentation of Trout and Smallmouth fishing in the Ozarks. OUTING Our May outing will be to Lake Pawhuska on Saturday the 12th. The Lake is three miles west of Pawhuska on Hwy 11. We will meet at Bad Brad's Barbecue at noon for lunch. Try to arrive early, as seating is limited. It is on the north side of Hwy 11 as you are leaving Pawhuska going toward the lake. There are likely to be some trout caught and a lot of blue gill. Lake Map http://www.shopoklahoma.org/oklakes/pawhuska.htm If you are a beginner and would like some help please contact any member of the board (see club contacts below) and we will arrange for someone to get you started. VOLUNTEER NEEDED TFF is looking for a volunteer Public Relations person to handle meeting press releases and other PR items to area newspapers and such ... probably wouldn't take an hour a month. Contact Scott Hood if a member has experience or knows someone who does. shood91849@aol.com SMALLMOUTH RENDEZVOUS May 4th and 5th 9am - 4pm Daily Tahlequah Community Bldg 300 W. 1st St. Tahlequah, OK For details click on www.okieflyfishers.org APRIL OUTING Outing to Watts Report, by Scott Hood ... I wish I had some pictures for you of our Saturday outing, but the camera was frozen in my pocket... only Doug Haskins, Del Moore and myself showed up. The rest of you are all "panty-wastes" I guess (or smart?) ... It did drizzle some early and the temp. was 38 when we got to the Watts property around 7:45am (it never snowed) ... when we left at 1:30pm it was still only about 42 and the wind had come up some. This is the fun part... the fishing was great. I caught and released about 20 fish myself, one 16 inch Brown. I know that Del caught more than that and Doug stayed in the same spot or within 20 yards of the same spot all morning.( That is a sign of a bunch of fish for him.) Fish were rising and taking midges under the water film near the surface (Serendipity, green body) and zebra midges under an indicator set at about 18 inches. ( black with silver and black with gold.) We caught most of our fish above the area where the cable crosses the river on the property. I did move below the cable near the end of the day and did well... mostly 12 to 14 inch fish ... all very healthy. The state has apparently stocked a few small Browns again as we each caught a few of them... "dinks." It also appeared that they had stocked on the Watts property as I noticed many fish missing the front pectoral fins. You all should have been there! It was worth it! FISH ON!
