Fly Rod Test My suspicion that there is not a strong correlation between price and performance in fly rods seems to be confirmed by a recent article in Fish & Fly 2007 travel and tackle edition. They tested 34 five weight rods for casting accuracy from 20 to 60 feet in 10 foot increments and for "feel" and "finish". They had two groups, value rods, under $300 and premium rods over. Prices ranged from $69 to $655. The big surprise was that the $69 rod out preformed the $655 rod scoring 60 to 51. (The range of scores was 84 to 21.) Their main criticism of the $69 (L.L. Bean Quest II) rod was that the reel seat was so cheap that your reel would at some point surely fall in the river. My choice from the test group for the best bargain would be the Temple Fork Outfitters Lefty Kreh Professional Series rod at $140. Perhaps the strongest correlation one can draw to a rod's cost is the makers advertising budget. Syd |
