Class Concepts
The question of authenticity could be asked about this website. It is my website, I created it, I cut and pasted other peoples words and ideas but when I put them together myself they're mine now. Benjamin discusses this idea of authenticity in "The work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction." He elaborates on the idea that mechanical reproduction of a work of art represents something new. With the internet we are now faced more often with the question of "who's is this?"
Presence is available throughout the website. The idea of being here or there is only as far away as the click of a button. You are literally transported to someplace else (another site) when you go to favorite links page and decide to explore another site. It is here was portrayed when I was able to import pictures from the web and my scanner. They were no longer over there. Jacobson further discusses the idea of presence in the article "On Theorizing Presence".
In Kellner's article "Debord and the Postmodern Turn," he presents the idea that it is no longer the object but the representation of the object that becomes important. This idea of the spectacle is further illustrated by Debord in saying that the "spectacle is the moment when the commodity has attained the total occupation of social life." The spectacle exists in this website through my own personal obsession. This class had truly opened my eyes to the world of cyber culture, but until I truly had no idea how amazing it is until I experienced it on my own. I'm now in the world of html, we'll just have to see if I can last.
