Occoquan Bay NWR was established in 1998 and is situated at the confluence of the Potomac and Occoquan Rivers. The square mile of field and marsh that served as a US Army radio communications site and research facility since the early 1950s was dedicated in late 1998 as the US Fish and Wildlife Service's newest Virginia refuge.
The refuge has a unique mix of wetlands, forest, and native grasslands that is home to over 650 species of plants and 200 species of birds.
