Thomas PictureThe mosaicist's art is surprisingly subtle. Each tessera is placed with painstaking care and consideration for its impact on the whole work. Not only must the artist select the right size, shape, and color for the tile, he must determine the angle at which light will fall on the image and the effect he wishes to achieve. Tiles placed unevenly create a glittering effect, with adjacent tiles of the same color appearing lighter or darker depending on the amount of light reflected - and when glass tiles are placed in this manner, they can catch the light through their edges and sparkle or glow from within. The mosaicist must keep the entire image within his mind, while understanding exactly how the selection and placement of a specific tessera will support the achievement of that image.

Both writing and information technology are like this, with a number of individual components carefully coordinated to achieve an overall purpose. And like a mosaic, the result will be built up over time to accomplish the goals set for it. Each piece of the story or system must be carefully envisioned, selected, and developed to produce exactly the right effect. These, too, are surprisingly subtle arts, but I love them. Where does the next piece go?  I can't wait to find out.
