The
Spanish Timbrados
When the
Spaniards conquered the Canary Isles in 1478, they found there, besides other
precious things, the wild canary bird. Very soon the canary became a
considerable object of trade. The Spaniards undertook to keep it entirely for
themselves for nearly a century by exporting only the male birds and very wisely
holding back the female ones. By the middle of the 16thcentury this
privilege was broken. A Spanish trading vessel was driven ashore on the Italian
coast. There had been canaries on board the ship, which escaped and settled on
the Isle of Elba. As the climate was very favorable the birds propagated
themselves rapidly. Catching these birds, the Italians found a new source of
revenue.
The Spaniards
continue to breed canaries in large numbers and one of their most popular breeds
is the Spanish Timbrado, a canary that is bred for its song and one that is
probably the closest to the original wild canary that can now be found.

C) Correct Handling
Adecuado manejo
A) It is important you knew that at least
parents and grandparents of the birds we are going to breed
with, were birds of high quality.
B) Once we know our birds have a quite
good pedigree, it is very interesting and necessary the practice
of inbreeding.
tipo consanguineo.
C) We will talk about it later...
Hablaremos de este asunto a

Correct Handling of the Spanish Timbrado

Manejo Básico del Canario de Canto

1) We must breed our birds in individual
cages (one pair per cage) keeping good records of
the band number of the parents and new born chicks. Give
them to eat high quality seed mixture, nestling food and follow
good husbandry rules.
Do not recommend offering any kind of fruit or vegetables at this
stage of the breeding season.
2) Young chicks at 35 days of age, must be placed with
their siblings being male or female, not exceeding groups of 10
to 15
as a maximum in a cage (flight) where they can not hear any adult bird,
(different room for acoustical purposes).
3) Once in October, and we could
heard at least some clear tours of the future song of our bird,
we must place each Timbrado male into his competition cage.
4) Then it is important to allow the young
singers to see each other for one week and once this time had
finished they must be placed into wood boxes (each box must
contain four birds of the same family in their own competition
cage).
At this time they must be placed on a table for 15 minutes at
least once or twice a day, to be prepared to competition.
If we work on that way is very probable
that our Timbrado canaries will sing at the show, a song that will be
different from some birds to others due to their different
pedigrees.
