Setting Up the Milling Machine

The shipping boxes from Taig.
One box had the Z-axis column and the motor.  The other had the X-Y table assembly.  All the parts were bolted to boards in the bottom of the shipping boxes.  Great packing job!
Here is the mound of paper that was packed into the boxes around the mill parts.  I'm still pulling more out of the boxes.
After removing the bolts and taking the parts out of the boxes.
I've bolted the base to my workbench and attached the Z-column to the base.  I tightened the attachment nut lightly so the column still tilts from side to side with a little pressure.
Before attaching the motor, I set the vertical column to be straight.  I used the wrench as a wedge to lock the spindle.  A test indicator is held in an arbor.  The angle of the column is tweaked until the indicator runs along the side of the 1-2-3 block with less than .0005" change.
The motor was mounted.
I mounted the Taig vise to the table and trammed it parallel.  This is done by mounting the test indicator in the collet and touching the fixed jaw of the vise.  You move the Y-axis back and forth and tweak the angle of the vise until the indicator doesn't change much across the jaw.  This isn't all that great a vise, and the jaw isn't flat.  I clamped a piece of scrap aluminum, put a 1/4" end mill in the collet and made my first chips.
