Todd Ferrante's PGI Firestorm

<back to home>

In September 2004, I finally got an electric autococker: the PGI Firestorm.  Here is the picture of how it looked on ebay:

Of course there was no way I could resist doing a few modifications...

If I owned a HPA tank, this setup would have been fine, but I have CO2 tanks.  I shopped for a HPA tank on ebay for a while, but never could find one for a price I was willing to pay.  So I decided to do the same expansion chamber to regulator trick that I did on my Piranha.  Except this time I decided to have some fun and experiment with the placement of the two added components.  On my Piranha, the regulator is vertical in front of the trigger and the expansion chamber lays flat under the barrel.  For the Firestorm, I decided to put the regulator and chamber both laying horizontal on either side to the gun body.  It was also necessary to make a custom 90 degree sight rail so the red dot sight could look around the Firestorm's vertical feed.  I also ended up replacing the stock barrel with a Freak barrel system and adding a Ricochet AK hopper to keep up with the faster rate of fire.  The result looks like a hopped up Star Wars blaster looking thing...

Modified PGI Firestorm
I removed the stock ASA vertical adapter that fed low pressure air from the regulator to the gun body.  I made a replacement using my milling machine.  The replacement has a female NPT port to accept an airline from the regulator.  It also has "wings" that extend upwards and mount two ASA adapters along the body that hold the regulator and the expansion chamber.  This side view shows the expansion chamber on the right side.  Sharper eyes will notice the unconventional flow through the expansion chamber.

The left side view shows the regulator mounted horizontally.  Lines over the top of the body carry input vapor CO2 from the expansion chamber and low pressure CO2 to the gun.

Here is a closeup shot of the right side mounting details.

And the left side details.

The 90 degree sight rail adapter grabs both the gun and the sight.  It has a cutout to straddle the line from the expansion chamber to the regulator.

The rear of the gun showing all the new stuff.  Wild, huh?

The left side with the sight.  I added a gauge to the regulator to show the regulated pressure.

The whole package. PGI Firestorm.  Freak Barrel with 8" tip (13" overall).  Ricochet AK hopper.  ADCO Sure Shot red dot sight on custom machined 90 degree sight rail adapter.  Expansion chamber and low pressure regulator horizontally mounted on custom machined air input assembly.  Angled ASA on drop forward to help keep liquid CO2 out of the lines.
