Trip on the Northwest River,  April 24,  2004

I paddled the Northwest River with my friend Bill and his son Billy who have a canoe and have done a lot of paddling in the Tidewater area over the last few years.  We met early on a Saturday morning at the Baum Road boat ramp (more like a put in but very nice for us canoeists and kayakers).  The put in is at the Northern end of Smith's Creek which meets up with the Northwest River proper at the Northwest River park.  We only paddled a short distance on the main river as the wind was blowing and the main river is a good deal wider than Smith's Creek.  The one thing that amazed me was the lack of civilization bordering the river.  We only saw one house and it was shortly after leaving the put in.  Other than that the park was the only other sign of civilization.

Billy and Bill with their canoe at the Baum Road put in.  The water was nice that day.  I know because I managed to tip over while trying to exit my kayak.  Many chuckles ensued at that.

Billy and I on the main part of Northwest River.  We just rested for a little water and snacks before heading back up into Smith's Creek.

Billy and Bill drifting and resting on our way back to the put in.

This was one of the offshoots of Smith's Creek that we explored.  It also provided a quick rest and shelter from the wind on our way back to the put in. The upper part of Smith's Creek is very intimate and winding.  Even smaller than this little offshoot.
