Trip on the Pocaty River, September 12, 2004
I paddled the Pocaty River West of the Blackwater Road with my neighbor John and his son Wes. We put in and made a round trip to the Nature Conservancy's observation deck/platform at the mouth of the Pocaty where it meets the North Landing River.
John built a very nice daytripper canoe over the summer and this was the second trip in that boat. The three of us launched and paddled it for the first time a week prior. We chose a much smaller waterway (West Neck Creek at Dozier's Bridge) and only paddled about an hour or so. It was my first time in a canoe and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Wes and John in their new canoe named "Legacy". John did a great job and the boat performed just great. He also made the paddle he is using.
Me and my kayak named "The Rory".
John took a series of pictures that made a 360 degree panoramic collage. Sorry the size is so small but it looked better this way.
If you want a more detailed look at this waterway, check out my other trip reports that I posted previously on this site.
I did learn a new trick today. I was able to get out at the platform's dock without a problem. I popped my sprayskirt off the coaming and sat on the back deck of the boat with my feet still in the cockpit and stood up. I was holding onto the dock but it was very stable and easy from there to climb onto the dock. I entered the boat from the dock in the reverse manner. This worked well since the dock was so high from the water level.
John brought his GPS along for the ride and we averaged a lazy 1.82 mph on the trip out. Our top speed was about 4.1 mph. The trip back was even easier as we paddled with the current and the wind. We took our time and enjoyed a beautiful morning on the water.
See ya next time!
