What's new in this Revision

I have changed Internet Service Provider (ISP) and with that change came a new e-mail address. So, please use this new address (see above) if you want to contact me.

My Topcon research and collecting is suffering from neglect on my part. After about seven years I feel the well is about dry. And, while I have enjoyed the hours I devoted to the Topcon RE Super/Super D System, I have other interests now and therefore less time for Topcon. I will keep this site online, but doubt that I will be adding additional material.

And, I will be glad to answer e-mails relating to the Topcon RE Super/Super D cameras, including the Super Dm, and both the RE Auto Topcor and R Topcor lenses. But PLEASE, do not ask me about the following:

The Topcon R camera or the Auto Topcor (note missing RE)
or the F. Auto Topcor lenses
The Topcon Uni, Unirex or IC Auto cameras; or their UV
         or HI series lenses.
The Topcon RE-2 or D-1 cameras
The Topcon RE 200 or RE 300 or their RE Topcor (note
       missing Auto) lenses

I believe these are fine cameras and lenses, but I know very little about them and will be at a loss for answers.

One more item: I no longer keep up with the going prices for Topcon items, so please do not ask me the worth of a camera, lens or accessory. Since the online auction house, eBay, seems to be where much Topcon equipment is bought and sold, track the prices there to get some idea of the going price. Look at the "completed auctions" for final bid amount.

Several of you have sent me descriptions of Topcon equipment you want to sell, asking if I would be interested. I do appreciate such offers, but my collection is nearly completed and therefore I am not in the market for additional items.

I am not sure what is next for me with regards to Topcon. I may revive my interest again in a year or two; and then, I may dispose of my equipment to make room for something new. In any case, my obsession with Topcon has been much fun and I don't regret either the time or money I expended. Wonderful equipment with a proud history.

About this Page

The intent of this Web Page is to provide a central point where owners, users, and collectors of the Topcon RE Super/Super D camera system can meet and share information. I have been collecting this system for over 30 years and am quite familiar with most of the items. But there is much I don't know. So, I want to share my knowledge with any one who asks, and I would like others to share their knowledge and/or experience with me.

My e-mail address is:

Replace the "$" with "@" in the above address. (My effort to reduce SPAM.)

Please feel free to contact me with any questions, or information. Read the Caveats page for the few restrictions.

A Note on How I Use Model Numbers

The original Topcon camera, first marketed in 1963, was sold in the US as the Super D and in the rest of the world as the RE Super. However, when Topcon upgraded the camera in 1972-73 they dropped the RE Super name and sold the new camera as the Super D world wide. This leads to confusion when the name Super D is used. Is it the original 1963 model or the 1972 model?

To avoid this ambiguity I decided to adopt a system using Model Numbers with the number being the first two digits of the serial number. Thus:

  • The original camera, the 1963 RE Super/Super D, becomes Model 46
  • The 1972 upgraded Super D is Model 71
  • The Super Dm name is unambiguous, but to maintain consistency I refer to this camera as the Model 72.

NOTE:  If you print any of these pages, set your printer to the Landscape format to prevent cutting off the right edge of the page.

Other Topcon Web Sites

Information relating to the Topcon RE Super/Super D camera system is scarce and I would like to highlight what is available on the Internet. At present, I find only two other sites relating to this system--these are presented below. Please bring to my attention any other sites that should be included.

Topcon Story
http://www.marcoant.com/Topcon/top.htm  This site is hosted by Marco Antonetto, the author of the book Topcon Story. It presents images of the full range of Topcon cameras, and includes other valuable information.

Topcon   http://www003.upp.so-net.ne.jp/Topconclub/   This is Takamori Yoshida's Web Page and presents images of his wonderful Topcon collection. The RE Super/Super D cameras, lenses and accessories are all there along with other Topcon systems. At present this site is mostly in the Japanese language (but don't let this put you off, the images are outstanding), And now Takamori is beginning to add English translations to make his information more available to a world wide audience.

Casual Collector   http://www.vermontel.net/~wsalati/CasualCollector/topcon.htm   Bill Salati has added a Topcon page to his Casual Collector site. Take a look at it, and also browse his other pages of classic cameras.

Captain Jack's Exkata Pages   http://captjack.exaktaphile.com/praktina/Topcon%20Cameras.htm   Since Exkata was the grandfather of Topcon SLRs, Captain Jack has expanded his area of interest to include Topcons. Only the Model R for now, but he promises to include the RE Super/Super D in the future.

I strongly encourage you to visit these sites, they are well worth the time and effort.
