Revolutionary War

There are basically 3 different kinds of records to research, Compiled Service Records, Pension Records, and Bounty land Records.  Compiled Service Records on individuals were not created during the Revolutionary war.  They were created over 100 years later.  Information was compiled from original records such as order books, muster rolls and miscellaneous documents.  The information was then put on cards which have since been microfilmed.  Men who served in state units or local militia were not compiled since they never came under control of the Continental Army.  The states and the continental congress did not have the money to really pay the service men so they offered them free land.  The service member had to apply for their bounty land.  Once they received their land warrants they could then exchange them for land or sell them for cash.

Civil War

There are numerous records to begin your research.  The Compiled Service Records, Pension Applications, Widows Pension Applications, Unit Histories or Records, and Battle or Engagement Histories.  The National Archives (NARA) holds most of these records except for Confederate Pensions. Confederate Pensions are held by the individual states.  Pensions were applied for in the state the veteran or widow were residing after the war.  If your ancestor fought for Tennessee during the war but later moved to Virginia he or his widow would have filed for a pension in Virginia. Confederate pensions were usually only available to disabled or indigent soldiers or their dependents.

Contains records of the first seizures of United States property in the Southern States, and of all military operations in the field, correspondence and orders.

World War I  -  World War II

On July 12, 1973 a fire destroyed approximately 16-18 million official military personnel files held at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis Missouri.   NARA list the following records as lost:

Army - 80% loss of personnel records discharged between November 1,  1912 to  January 1,  1960.

Air Force - 75% loss of personnel records discharged between September 25, 1947 to January 1, 1964 (with names alphabetically after Hubbard, James E.)

There is a link located at the top far right of this page to order military records from NARA. Requests for copies of veterans’ Military Personnel Files must be authorized by original signature of the veteran or next-of-kin to protect their privacy.
