American Graves in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

The following is a list of American Military graves located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. These graves are maintained by Marines who are assigned to the Dominican Republic. This is not part of their job but they do it anyway. They look after each of these fallen soldiers so their memory and their graves will never be forgotten. To these men and women, Thank You. The 3rd Marine Regiment was formed on December 20, 1916  by consolidating Marine detachments from the various ships in the Atlantic Fleet then at anchor in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. 

The regiment was first involved in Campaigns in Mexico and during World War I the regiment was heavily involved in the pacification of the Dominican Republic.

After World War I the 3rd Marines became a reserve unit stationed in San Francisco, CA eventually being disbanded in 1937.

The 3rd Marine Regiment was reactivated  June 16, 1942  in North Carolina, as part of the World War II military expansion.  The regiment fought  at Bougainville and Guam. 

Four medals of Honor were awarded to members of 3rd Marines for their actions during World War II.
