The annual Train Song Festival is held at Old Poway Park in Poway, California. The free event, co-sponsored by the City of Poway and San Diego Folk Heritage, features live musical entertainment with songs inspired by the railroads. This one-of-a-kind event brings to life the history of American rails, songs that were inspired by the freedom to travel, the tragedies and triumphs of the railroad men, and the adventure of the hobos and other traveling folk, whose lives have been entwined with the trains.
During the day, in addition to the great train-related music, The Poway Midland
Railroad gives train rides aboard its 1907 Baldwin Steam Engine; The
Poway Station Model Railroad Club displays model trains in Templars Hall;
Old Poway Park's western gun-fighting teams re-enact train robberies;
children can have their faces painted, make train crafts, hear stories
and see toy train displays and The Heritage Museum provides an historical
train display.

Elementary students studying western history enjoy hearing music of the era and seeing it played on acoustic instruments. Trails & Rails share songs that the settlers brought with them, that cowboys made up as they worked the trail drives, that people wrote later about cowboy life, and that the movies and television programs of the 1900s made popular.

The first Saturday every June is designated National Trails Day (NTD) in the United States. On that day every year more than a million hikers, bikers, equestrians, and others take part in thousands of events nationwide in celebration of America's trails. These events include new trail dedications, workshops, educational exhibits, equestrian and mountain bike rides, rollerblading, trail maintenance, and hikes on America's favorite trails. http://usparks.about.com/cs/hikingtrails/a/trailsday.htm
San Diego County's first Mexican land grant includes an 1823 adobe ranch house constructed by the Commandante of the San Diego Presidio. In 1846, Rancho los Penasquitos was the first place of rest for General Stephen Watts Kearny and his Army of the West after the Battle of San Pasqual. Enlarged in 1862 as the gracious home of a celebrated Yankee river boat captain and his wife, the niece of California's last Mexican governor, Pio Pico, the building and site comprise a National Historic and Archaeological District. The beautiful canyon locale within a 3700-acre open space preserve offers hiking, biking and equestrian trails.
