Brett and I got woken up at 4:30 am Sunday 10/26/03 by our landlady, PJ. Apparently Brett had not slepted very well because after midnight he kept hearing sirens and yet -- he failed to hear the doorbell. I on the other hand, never heard the sirens, but I did hear the doorbell. I got up and said, "Who would be ringing our doorbell at this hour of the morning?" rather grumpily.
PJ may well have heard me because we live in a desert area and as it is hot, we have a tendancy to keep our main door open at night, but lock the heavy duty security screen. The second thing I noticed after the time, was the smell. Not fully awake I did not recognize it as smoke. I squinted at her and she said that the police were just through here and she was informed we might have to evacuate because of the fire.
I nodded. I looked outside. I saw nothing but black sky. Not too unusual for 4:30 am. I went back to bed and told Brett. We both tried to go back to sleep, but to no avail. The urgency set into our minds and so he turned on the news and I got dressed and went outside.
Outside I saw the hill you will see in some of our outdoor daytime pictures with a huge red glow behind it. Ok. That was scary. It wasn't long before I was online telling people via email or IM that I might miss out doing some of my ACTD duties because I might be off line for a few days.
