Sunday, April 10

Today we are on our own in the morning. Kendall cried several times in the night and then woke up very early. We think she has a tummy ache. She was up at 4:30am, which is very unusual for her. We tried to get her back to sleep, but no luck so we decided to get up and get ready for breakfast. The breakfast here is great and Kendall ate more than I think her little tummy can hold, but she doesn't seem to get full! The dining room is right next to the river and we can watch the boats on the river.

After breakfast we walk around the hotel some and see what there is to see. There is a beautiful waterfall about 3 stories tall and we walk to the top. There are also many huge goldfish swimming in the bottom of the waterfall and many come up like they expect you to feed them. Kendall points at the fish and we are glad she is noticing things around her. Then we try to get her to take a rest, but it is short. Trish still has a cough and it wakes Kendall up. So, we decide to drop off the laundry and do some shopping. One of the shops, China Doll, has a great laundry service and some items for sale. They also have strollers that adoptive families can borrow free of charge while they are here. A percentage of their profits go directly to the Guangzhou orphanage, so we feel very good about buying some tourist items there. We also see many artists etching pictures and photos, painting, etc. Everyone is very nice and wants your business. They will bargain with you and constantly complement you hoping to get more business. It is definitely not as abrupt and in your face as in Shanghai, which we greatly appreciate.

We eat lunch at a local diner which offers American food. Kendall has a huge bowl of mashed potatoes and eats the whole bowl. She also tries some French fries from our plates and seems to like them. We fit in a little nap before heading out with the group in the afternoon.

Our guide takes us into the city to a local mall and also the pearl and jade market. There is a huge mall with several floors and many shops on each floor. I can't count the number of shops!! On the other side of the mall is the pearl and jade market which is just as large with each shop selling pearls, beads, jade, etc. It is amazing! We pick up a few trinkets and then head back to the hotel.

While waiting for dinner, Kendall is babbling more and walks while holding Mommy's hands. She doesn't want to go far, but it is progress. We don't understand much of the babble, but I did hear Momma and Daddy! We are excited that she seems to be coming out of her shell little by little.

For dinner, our guide took us to a Cantonese restaurant with great food. When you walk in there are aquariums filled with fresh fish, crabs, and many other items such as grubs, water beetles, eel, turtles, and water snakes. Trish is not very brave when it comes to eating anything that looks like snake, so we settle for some fresh fish, vegetables, and fried rice. Everything is great and we are getting much better with chop sticks. Tim is very skilled and Trish is getting more food in her mouth than on the table, so that is progress. Kendall tries to feed herself with her spoon for the first time also! She needs some practice, but she will get there soon!

Tomorrow we are going to the open market and on a dinner cruise. Our guide tells us we will see things we have never seen before at the market, so it should be a very interesting day! Our guide will file the paperwork at the consulate for us in the morning and we will pick up everything Tuesday afternoon. Our stay is coming to an end and we are anxious to head home!
