Notes for ROBERT ALLEN, JR.:

http://members.tripod.com/~mallen4896/Allen/Allen-RobertJr.html

Robert Allen was in St. Paul's Vestry book until 1743. Then appears in the newly formed County of Lunenburg Co., formed in 1745. By 1757 he was in Amelia Co. VA., where he was a grantor. By 1761 Robert and his wife Elizabeth were residents of Granville Co. North Carolina.

Robert was married at least twice. The name of Elizabeth shows up on land deeds. No maiden name is proven, speculation has it as WADE, STOKES or even YOUNG. It appears the name is Young, as the first son born was Young Allen, and this name continues down many generations.

John Young and his family lived in St. Peter's Parish in 1704, then Lemuel Young lived near the Allen's in Lundenburg Co. Not only does the name of Young descend down in the Allen family, the great grandson of Robert Allen and grandson of Drury Allen was named Young Lemuel Allen. This gives strong indication Elizabeth was a Young, and Young Lemuel Allen named for Lemuel Young.

Elizabeth relinquished her dower rights in two deeds recorded in Granville Co. February 1762. She died shortly after signing these two deeds. One deed states Robert Allen Sr. and his wife Elizabeth Allen to Robert Allen Jr. for love and affection, 225 acres on the West side of Billy's creek.

Robert had remarried to Hannah Edwards, daughter of John Edwards by 1765 when Mr. Edward's will was written. Mr. Edwards named two daughters Hannah and Elizabeth as being married to Allen's.

Robert moved from Granville/Franklin Co. to Caswell Co. NC., in 1781. He died in 1782 and left his will in Caswell Co. It was proved in Court 10 March, 1784.

Per "Allens of the Southern States", Robert Allen, Jr., was given a deed from his father for 125 acres in 1735. The land processioning records suggest that the aging Robert Allen, Sr., may have divided his Hanover County land among his four sons, Robert, Jr., William, Drury, and Richard. The twin sons, Joseph and Benjamin, were not mentioned in the land processioning records, and it appears they may have accompanied their father when he moved to Goochland County.

Robert (Jr.) , William, Drury, and Richard Allen were all named in the processioning records of St. Paul's Parish in 1743. Robert Allen (Jr.) had land in two precincts, numbers 4 and 18.

Precinct No. 4. Ordered into one precinct for processioning the lands of George Norvel, John Bowles, Richard Winn, John Johnson, John Sutton, Stephen Sunter, Widow Wake, Widow Casey, Francis Clark, John Guilcrest, George Davis, Thomas Johnson, Charles Talley, William Nichols, Robert Allen, Robert Wade, Philip Reynolds, John Glen, Anthony Winston's orphans, and that Richard Winn and Benjamin Bowles see the said processioning performed, whomade the following report.

Precinct No. 18. Ordered into one precinct for processioning the lands of Robert Allen, Thomas Bowles, William Henderson, John Hogg, William Hogg, Smuel Meredity, John Kersey, George Bell, David Bell, Robert Webb, John Cobbs, Capt. Isaac Winston and Mr. Samuel Meredith see the said processioning performed who made the following report: In obe3dience to the within order we the subscribers have seen the within mentioned lands peacably and quietly processioned.

Robert and Drury Allen were not in the records of St. Paul's Vestry Book after 1743. The loss of most of the deed records for Hanover County makes it impossible to determine when and to whom the two brothers sold their lands in that county. Records for Robert and Drury were found in the newly formed Lunenburg County, Virginia, in 1746, along with records of many other families from Hanover County, including the names of Tandy and Sylvanus Walker.

Drury Allen and his brother, Robert Allen, lived in the Reedy Church area, a part of Lunenburg County. They also lived near Lydall Bacon, who was the collector of tithes for that district.

From the Vestry Book of Cumberland Parish:

1746 to 1749, Robert Allen appointed Reader

1749 Robert Allen was appointed clerk of Little Roanoke

1751 Robert Allen was clerk and sexton at Otter River Church

From these records it is evident there were two or more Robert Allens in Cumberland Parish and a check of the tithes for Lunenburg County confirmed there two Robert Allens listed. In addition to the Robert Allen who lived in Lydall Bacon's district, there wasw another Robert Allen listed in John Phelps district in the western part of the county, which was later known as Bedford County, Virginia.

Robert Allen was listed on the titheable list in Lyddall Bacon's District in 1747, 1749, 1750, 1751, and 1752.

Robert and Drury Allen lived in Lydall Bacon's District of Lunenburg County for several years. Robert had a land grant in that county in 1755, but on January 20, 1757, he was called "Robert Allen of Amelia County, Virginia." Robert bought and sold several tracts of land in Amelia County, Virginia; then he moved to Granville County, North Carolina, in 1762.

The land records for Lunenburg County, Virginia, are not complete. No land grants could be found for Robert Allen in the Land Office File at the Virginia State Library, but some of his grantor deeds stated the land he was selling was part of a prior grant. Only one grantee deed was found for Robert Allen in Lunenburg County, but there are grantor deeds for seven tracts of land in that county, all sold by "Robert Allen of Notoway Parish, Amelia County, Virginia". Robert Allen was in Amelia County by 1757 but only one Grantee deed was found for him and that was in October 1759. He sold the latter tract of land in Amelia County in January of 1761, and one month later, Robert and his wife, Elizabeth Allen, had become residents of Granville County, North Carolina.

In Amelia County, VA, Robert Allen purchased land adjoining Henry Yarbrough in 1759. In 1762, both men were in Granville County, NC, and their names appeared together in many land records. About 1770, Robert Allen's son, Drury, was married to Henry Yarbrough's daughter, Elizabeth.

Robert Allen also purchased land in Amelia County, VA, in 1759 from John and Elizabeth Hayes, of Lunenburg County. Young Allen, the oldest son of Robert Allen, witnessed a deed for John Hayes and his wife Elizabeth in Lunenburg County, VA, in 1761, and a few weeks later, Young purchased land from Reynold Allen in Johnston (later Wake) County, NC. The land purchased by Young was near the Granville County line and less than 20 miles from the land his father owned in Granville County in 1762.

Robert Allen's will was written in Caswell County in June 1782, just a year and a half after he bequeathed a negro girl named Charlotte to "Luck McKissack", but he did not state Lucy's relationship to him. The following year before his will was probated, he gave Lucy a deed of gift for Charlotte and the deed states that Lucy was his granddaughter. The deed to his granddaughter used the same salutation as deeds of gift from Robert Allen to his son, Robert Allen, Jr., in 1762 and to John Hudson and his wife, Elizabeth, in 1766.
