Notes for MARY ANN LEE:

'Mary Ann Lee Anderson - An interesting Character Who Has Lived Under Four Flags in Texas. Nacogdoches TX  Jan. 4'

(Part 1)

...she now lives in Hamilton Co.  She is the daughter of a man once as well known in this locality as any man of his day, old Uncle Isaac Lee, as he was generally called, & a widow of Benjamin Anderson, one of a noted pioneer family of this state.  Aunt Mary Ann is interesting by reason of her intelligence as much as on account of her antiquity.

In conversation she would talk something like this...

"I was born in AR in 1825 (really Dec 1827). My grandmother is buried is what is now known as the Henderson graveyard, a few miles west of Alexandria, LA.  My father moved to Texas in 1828 & 1st settled where the town of San Augustine now stands.  He built the first house there.  He soon found that he was on a survey of land belong to a Mexican, & he vacated it.  Then he lived a short time near where the village of Melrose now stands, ten miles east of the town of Nacogdoches & from there he came to the old homestead adjoining the town of Nacogdoches, on the southeast, locating on what is still known as the Isaac Lee labor of land, the place that he improved & occupied while he raised his children under 4 or 5 different flag -- 1st the Mexican, next the Texas Republic, the the US, then the Confederate States, & again the USA.  In 1870 father & I removed to Cherokee Co, near Alto, where he died in 1880, & I   removed to Hamilton Co. in 1885.

Oh, I've had many ups & downs & gone through many dangers.

I was in the "Run Away Scrape" in 1836, when all the people fled from here in a panic at the approach of the - - - despot Santa Anna, with the heartless Mexican army.  We crossed the Sabine River for safety, a dangerous crossing.  The river was overflowed & was r(unning?) (wild?) & we had to cross in an old leaky --- ferry boat & everybody was trying to get on it at once, & the men had to constantly dip water out as we crossed, & it did seem like the boat would sink anyhow. We remained over there several months, from April till August, & father made occasional trips back home.   We looked to Sam Houston for protection, & we had the greatest faith in him.  I still fondly respect his memory.

There were times here when life was uncertain.  Many a night did the women & children gather in at the old Adolphus Sterne residence, where old man Hoya now lives, so as to be within the protection of guards against Indains.  The old lady Sterne now lives in Austin & her son, Charley, at Palestine. They can tell about these same things.

When Sam Houston was wounded at the battle of San Jacinto & came  home, he brought with him a young mexican boy as Houston always did keep a servant to attend him.  Well, he would have this boy get his horse ready in town & help him up & come out with him to our house to drink buttermilk.  Houston was extremely fond of buttermilk, & we had plenty of the very best.  The cattle range was fine & we had a fine spring where we kept the milk cool & fresh.  It was in summer time. Houston would have the boy open our yard gate & he would ride his horse up to the front gallery & get off onto it & walk in on his crutches, leaving his horse to this Mexican servant boy.  We liked for him to come & I almost worshipped him. I was only a little girl but I knew all about it.  Oh, those grand old times & folks!  I love to talk & think about them. They have passed away, & I'll soon be gone too."

As the old lady boarded the train to leave some of her old family servants, one, an old black woman, bade her farewell with tears & sobs."

1968- Find Mitchel Anderson in Cherokee Co - Land Grant from Austin no. 71 of Nacogdoches - 320 acres -

________________________________________________________

From the notes of Terry Anderson:

Mitchell B. Anderson was goldrush kid who went to California in the 1850s and apparently stayed there with his brother Robert, rather than returning home to Texas.

Born in Alabama around 1823, he arrived in Texas at the age of ten. Mitchell shows up on the 1835 census at age 12 with his parents in the Sabine District. The fact that he doesn't show on the 1850 census has led most family researchers to believe that he was in California by this time.

According to R.B. Blake, "Mitchell B. Anderson, was living in Tuolumne County, Calif., in 1855, having gone there after the gold strike."

According to Ogreta Huttash, Mitchell "shared in estate of Benjamin Anderson, was in Tuolumne County, California at that time, in 1858. Benjamin Anderson sold a slave to raise the money for the trip. All say he never married. Am not sure when he went to California. FP thought his GLO Cert. 71 was in Cherokee County."

This land grant or warrant, is mentioned in the reference book, "1840 Texas Land Grants, Vols. 1 and 2." It shows that Mitchell Anderson arrived in Texas in June, 1840. We know that he actually arrived in 1834 with his parents, but in 1840 he would've been around 18 years old, 17 being the minimum age for eligibility. It is a class 3 certificate, meaning that he arrived after Oct. 1, 1837 and "resided in the Republic three years and performed the duties of citizenship," and is said to be for 640 acres. Interestingly, 640 acres was given to a head of household, whereas 320 acres were given to single men, 17 years or older. We don't know that Mitchell was ever married.

The conditional certificate is marked Nacogdoches County, Sept., 27, 1841. The unconditional certificate is dated Feb. 28, 1846.

Jane Melton's write-up repeats the same facts about the land grant and the Goldrush and adds, "An Anderson cousin in Ft. Worth has box of old letters, many of them from these boys who went to the gold country. The cousin who has the letters is of (Thomas Howard's) branch. She is Mary Anderson, Mrs. B." We're pretty sure the Mary Anderson that she speaks of was Mrs. Hugo Buergener, though we have her first name as Nan rather than Mary. Two of the Goldrush letters, passed down from Frankie Pearson, are reprinted in this volume, though others may exist.

The letter from March of 1854 states that, "all well at present except Mitchell who has been unwell for sometime but on the mend again." The second letter, written in July 1855, doesn't mention Mitchell but mentions a "Ben" and "Little Ben Anderson," as separate individuals. We think that Little Ben might refer to Mitchell, if his middle name stands for Benjamin. In this letter it says that he "is working three miles from this place. Has a very, very good claim but speaks of selling out and going up where we are." Having gotten a late start in the California gold rush, the success of the Andersons in panning for gold was marginal at best.

Mitchell was actually in California in the fall of 1853. As described in the next chapter, Mitchell Anderson had a claim located on a small creek called Sugar Pine creek about 20 miles east of Sonora. The claim was filed Oct. 7, 1853. This would've been a month after his father, Benjamin, had passed away. We don't know exactly when the boys left for California. In R.B. Blake's note regarding brother A.J. Anderson, he writes that, "he went with his brother, Mitchell B., to California in 1850, but returned to Nacogdoches."

The assumption that Mitchell B. died in California, either in the gold fields or later, has not been universally accepted. According to a note in Ogreta Huttash's compilation, some believed that Mitchell came back to Texas and died in San Augustine. Frankie Pearson once believed this, she said.

Whatever his fate, he was supposed to have been in Tuolomne County, Calif., at the time Benjamin Anderson's will was processed in 1858. He doesn't appear in the 1860 FC in either California or Texas.

He had gray eyes, was fair complexioned and not tall in stature, or fat.

In late years he wore a mustache and small beard. From childhood, I remember him as kind, but firm calm voiced. A farmer all his life, he was never rich in worldly goods, but had a wealth of character.

Notes for ROBERT JEFFERSON ANDERSON:

From information available, Mitchell and Robert are the two Anderson's that went to California during the "Gold Rush".

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Notes of Terry Anderson (Terry.Anderson@aol.com):

Robert Jefferson Anderson, b. ca 1828 or 1830 in Greene County, Ala. (age 20 in 1850 Census).; lived in San Augustine, Tex., and California; went to Tuolumne County, Calif; died in California.

Robert J. Anderson was one of the boys who went to the California Gold Rush with his brothers, A. J, Napoleon, Mitchell, Ben, the two Sims cousins and other friends.

He was on the 1850 census in Nacogdoches County with his parents when the census taker came around October 21. He was age 20 and born in Alabama.

R.B. Blake's book states that Robert "went to Tuolumne County, Calif., with his two brothers in 1850, and remained there." We don't know if 1850 was an exact or an approximate date. 1853 is the earliest date we have for them in California, when their mining claims were filed.

Frankie Pearson's original notes indicate that Robert "lived in San Augustine, Tex., and California; went to Tuolumne County, Calif; died in Calif."

In Jane Melton's writings, she repeats basically the same thing, that Robert "went to Tuolumne County, Cal. with his two brothers in 1850 and remained there (Blake). F.P. says he never married, lived in San Augustine - died in California. Robert Jefferson Anderson got his settlement in 1858."

Ogreta Huttash says that "He stayed in California according to all my sources. . . Probate Final E, pages 167 and 168, according to my notes, is where you will see Robt Jeff. got his. The estate had a claim against three of the heirs, children of Benjamin Anderson, to wit: Mitchell B., Andrew J., and T. Jefferson Anderson "for an on account of the Boy slave Kinnard, which the said deceased . . . let the said children have to enable them by the sale of said slave to raise money to take to California, upon condition that they should account for the sum received for said slave and said slave was sold by them to William Buford for five hundred and fifty dollars."

Robert Jefferson, or Jeff, is mentioned in letter from Napoleon Bonepart to Thomas Howard July 8, 1855. He was still in California when his father's will was probated in 1858.

The 1860 Census of California lists five Robert Andersons, three of them miners, but none of them appears to be ours.

Notes for NAPOLEON BONAPARTE ANDERSON:

Frankie Pearson notes:

"(Doc) was born on way to Texas... Benjamin his father had a bell they would reing for all to come to meals. He (Doc) blew the bugle when he learned to play it, instead of the bell.  He wanted to go to war with the others but was hard of hearing so they let him look after the ones in the community, to feel he was in the war.  He had a Shoe Repair shop in the Old Stone Fort of Nacogdoches where the History of Nacogdoches was made, and has been moved now to the Stephen F. Austin College, Nacodoches and is just like it was.  I saw it in Mar 16, 1967 and looked just like when I was a child even to the dim light at the back.   When they were going to move it, I remember my brother asked me what I remember about it and I said it looked so dark but there was a dim light at the back of the room, as I recalled it and - there was even a dim light.  Such a feeling of seeing it- just cannot describe it- but the history that it tells - just go see it.   See Pauline Shirley Morrie Book on Nacogdoches Early Records- p. 122-3 (EARLY RECORDS OF NACOGDOCHES COUNTY TEXAS.)"
