Joseph, the father. The son married Sarah Babcock in 1756.

of his life. His will was written 18

Born in
Stonington, Conn, 11 Aug 1721 (VR), son of Joseph Hewitt and Mary Chesebrough;
died in Stonington before Nov 1784, when father drew up his will mentioning
Nathaniel as deceased, and possibly in 1769, when the probate court ordered a
judgement against Nathaniel's sons, Josiah G. and Nathaniel Hewitt, Jr., for
debts their father owed (Stonington Probate Records, docket #1633). Nathaniel
married REBECCA GRANT, 24 Apr 1740
(VR), at the 2nd Church of Christ,
North Stonington, Conn.
(CR). Rebecca was born in Stonington,
20 Jun 1723 (VR), daughter
of Josiah Grant and Grace Prentice; date and place of her death are unknown.
There is
very little information on these couple. Nathaniel and Rebecca lived in Stonington,
Conn. where all of their children were
born. They joined the 2nd Church of Christ
in North Stonington on 16 Jun 1742, the same day Rebecca was baptized as an adult
and their first child, Josiah Grant Hewitt was baptized. Nathaniel purchased
and wold numerous pieces of property in Stonington,
the last record on 19 Jun 1784.
No probate
records or cemetery records have been found for this couple.

Born in Stonington,
Conn., 2 May 1731 (VR), son of Joseph Hewitt and Mary
Chesebrough; died after 1784, when mentioned in his father's will, date and
place unknown. Joseph married SARAH BABCOCK, 27 May 1756, in Voluntown,
Conn. (NYB&GR). Sarah was born in North
Stonington, Conn., 18 Apr 1739 (VR), daughter of
Nathaniel Babcock and Sarah Billings; she died in Petersbury, Rensselaer Co.,
NY on 27 Aug 1792 (Brown).
Wheeler,
in the HISTORY OF STONINGTON, CONN., was in error when he listed Joseph's wife
as Mehitable (Brown) Swan. She was the 2nd wife of his father. During the
French and Indian War, Joseph served in the Conn.
militia from 10 Apr to 10 Dec 1764,
in Capt. John Tyler's co., Lt. Col. Israel Putnam's regiment of Conn.
troops.
Joseph and
Sarah lived in the Stonington area
of Conn. until sometime before
1782, when they moved to New York
and settled in Stephentown, Albany Co. (now Rensselaer Co.), NY. They were
there at the time of the 1790 U.S. Census. It may be that after the death of
his wife in 1792, Joseph moved to Providence, Saratoga Co., NY. No probate or
cemetery records have been found for Joseph. THE NATHANIEL BABCOCK GENEALOGY,
by Cyrus Henry Brown, mentions only two children belonging to Joseph and Sarah,
a daughter Mary and a son Joseph. Wildey, in the GENEALOGY OF THE CHESEBROUGH
FAMILY, listed 5 other children; Billings,
Nathaniel, Samuel, David and Grace. No proof has been discovered to
substantiate those children. The Nathaniel on the list has been confused with
Nathaniel (#152), son of Nathaniel (#42), and some researchers have confused
the Samuel on the list with Samuel (#190), son of Jonas Hewitt (#60).
