Notes for RICHARD INGRAHAM:

Richard's ancestry simply is unknown and all claims to his Royal ancestry cannot be accepted! We, as many others, have tried to link Richard to Sir Arthur Ingram, I and Susan Brown, his son Sir Arthur Ingram, II and Eleanor Slingsby, and his grandson Arthur Ingram, III, Esq and Jane Mallory, and even directly, but cannot. Our research has found Ingram, Mallory and Slingsby records eliminating their families as ancestors of Richard. We maintain our information for the rich Slingsby and Mallory history and because both families have other links to the Chesebro' family. And, there is always the possibility that this Inram family could be related in some way.

FOR INFORMATION ONLY we have connected Richard to Sir Arthur Ingram, I with an "! INFORMATION !"

PLEASE DO NOT ASSUME THE RELATIONSHIP!

1. Some questions exist about different Richard Ingraham individuals living in Rehoboth and Northampton during the period 1630 through 1683. Information recorded here is as if there was only one Richard. Richard may have been christened March 18, 1600 in Fishtoft, Lincolnshire, England, son of John Ingram. (LDS Batch Number c028262)

2. A Richard Ingraham, on October 19, 1630, asked for and on May 18, 1631 became Freeman of Massachusetts. (We do not know the spelling in these records - see next note for our recorded spelling.)

3. The first item in a list drawn up about 1643 for the division and allotment of lands among the first proprietors of Rehoboth, according to the valuations of their estates appears the following:

"1. Mrs. Bur . . . . . . . . . . £100-00-00 Rich. Ingram accepted in her place"

Because of this record and the Ingram family in England, we have recorded "Richard Ingraham".

4. Other records of Richard Ingraham include:

A. Richard Ingraham married Joan (Rockwell) Baker, widow of Jeffery Baker of Windsor, Connecticut - Frost

B. In Northampton in 1668 a Joan Baker (daughter of William Rockwell; widow of Jeffery Baker) married Richard Ingraham on December 11, 1668

- Savage (No issue)

5. Richard was on a town record in Rehoboth on June 28, 1653. Land records show transactions as early as 1643. He was surveyor of highways in 1655. In 1668 he signed a petition against import taxes. He was listed as freeman at Northampton on February 8, 1678.

6. From the American Genealogist:

"Richard Ingraham who died in Northampton, MA in Aug 1683, the common progenitor & father of William & Henry of Boston, Jarret of Rehoboth, &

John of Hadley."

"There are some other Ingrahams in the locality who were the proper age to have been children of Richard, but whose relationship to him, however

probable, can only be conjectural."

7. Richard, in 1673, contributed to a fund in support of Harvard College.

8. In his will probated in 1683, Richard Ingraham of Northampton bequeathed to his second wife, Joan, but does not specifically list any of his children.

Children of RICHARD INGRAHAM and ELIZABETH WIGNALL are:

Notes for ABIGAIL INGRAHAM:

m. 2nd 1675 Joshua HOLMES

m. 3rd      Capt. James AVERY

Swamp Yankee, by James Allyn, page 32.

Samuel married Abigail Ingraham of Bristol, RI.

Widow of Samuel Cheesebrough or Chesbrough. After Joshua Holmes I died, she

married Capt. James Avery, another ancestor. Above from History of Stonington

and Genealogical and Biographical Record of New London County, Conn.

Ancestral File family group record provides most of her stats.

Directory of the Ancestral Heads of N.E. Families says a William Ingraham,

cooper, was in Boston in 1653 and later moved to Stonington, CT. Ancestor of

Abigail???? She would have been 15 that year.

Abigail reportedly had 13 children: 7 Cheesebroughs, 10 Averys and 2 Holmes.

   Austin says she died 1694+.

1. In ca 1902 Abigail's maiden name was not known by Anna Chesebrough Wildey as stated in her book:

" A lineal descendant of this marriage, Capt. Alex S. Palmer who died in 1894, had not been able to find her maiden name."

From Vol. 1, page 342 of THE GREAT MIGRATION BEGINS:

"Many secondary sources give the bride's surname as Ingraham, but the evidence for this is not seen. The only Ingraham

family to which she could belong is that of Richard Ingraham of Rehoboth. He is of the right age and in the right place to

be father of Samuel's wife, but this Ingraham family is very poorly defined, and only sons are known for certain

(TAG 19:78, 21:190-91, 22:60-61)."

2. On June 5, 1675, Joshua Holmes was invited by the widow Abigail (Ingraham) Chesebrough to teach a school in Stonington, New London County, Connecticut whom he later married - her second of three marriages.
