1.  DR. TULLY CHURCH5 JARVIS  (JOSEPH4, WILLIAM3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born 02 Oct 1783 in Lanesborough, Berkshire Co., MA, and died Oct 1859 in Ithaca, Tompkins Co., NY.  He married MARGARET (MARGARETHA) SCHERMERHORN 09 Feb 1806, daughter of JACOB SCHERMERHORN and RACHEL GARDENIER.  She was born 08 Nov 1786 in New York, and died 20 Jan 1867 in Ithaca, Tompkins Co., NY.

Researching this line is Joann McAllister Hawkins (801)  544-4090

She's currently not active, but a relation, Charles McAllister Hall (whom I've talked to) & his wife Frankie T. Hall are both genealogists. Their address is:

However, he doesn't have Jarvis data that goes back to Tully.

Notes for MARGARET (MARGARETHA) SCHERMERHORN:

I believe Margaret (Schermerhorn) Jarvis is the daughter of Jacob J. and Rachel (Gardenier) Schermerhorn. Tully and Margaret named their children in a manner that clearly indicates this relationship. Specifically, their first son was named "Jacob Schermerhorn", and their first daughter was named "Abigail C." (Tully's mother was "Abigail Church"). This naming pattern continues with their third and fourth child, the third was named "Rachel B.", and Magaretha's mother was "Rachel Gardenier" (Rachel's "B" may actually have been "G"). And the fourth child was named "Joseph Alvah" (Tully's father was "Joseph" and Tully's brother was "Alvah").

There have been three different birthdates, varying by as much as ten months, that have been found for Tully's wife, Margaret (see below for specifics), none of which are the well documented birthdate of 11/8/1786 for Margaretha. Even the church record of 1/7/1787 for Margartha's baptism is earlier than the birthdates found for Margaret.

Only having reviewed the 1860 and 1865 census records for Margaret, I believe they too are inconsistant with one another. The 1860 census enumerated on July 17th has her age as 63, which is consistant with the age of Jacob and Rachel's daughter (also consistant with her age according to her headstone).  However, the 1865 census enumerated on June 19th has her age as 67, which is consistant with Margaret's age as reported in the newspaper. At least one of the ages for Margaret that is wrong on those census reports, unless she was born at another date (between June 20 - July 16, 1787).

Since none of the birthdates that have been found for Margaret match that of Margaretha's birth, one may conclude that Tully's wife could not be Jacob and Rachel's daughter.  However, I would argue that since all three birthdates found for Margaret are different, it could as well indicate that none of these are correct. In fact, one may even make an argument that the birthdate of 12/8/1787 that was found for Margaret is a typographical error for the correct birthdate of 11/8/1786. In any case, I discount the dates found of Margaret's birth because of their inconsistancies.

Found on pg 269 of "Marriage & Death Notices from Tompkins County, New York Newspapers", by Mary Smith Jackson:

"JARVIS Margaret 79y 1m 2d in Ithaca, NY January 20, 1867"    ==> b 12/18/1787

Death notice for Margaret found in the Ithaca Citizen & Democrat dated Friday, January 25, 1867

"In Ithaca Sunday morning, the 20th inst., Mrs. Margaret Jarvis, mother of J. A. Jarvis, aged 79 years, 1 month and 12 days.                                                                       ==> b 12/08/1787

Margaret's headstone reads ... Feb 1787 - Jan 1867                    ==> b 2/1787

The correct date of birth for Margaretha, dau of Jacob & Rachel Schemerhorn  is 11/8/1786.

To summarize the above, it seems very likely that Mary Smith Jackson may have made a typo and showed "2d", rather than "12d" that appeared in the Ithaca Citizen & Democrat. Given that this seems reasonable, might it be reasonable that the reporter who obtained Margaret's date of birth (presumably from family member)  mistakenly wrote down 12/8/1787 instead of 11/8/1786? Of course it is equally possible that the person provided this date incorrectly to the reporter. The fact that on her headstone is carved "Feb 1787" for her birth, it's clear her birthdate was being incorrectly communicated.
