1.  ROBERT STOCKTON2 SHARP  (WILLIAM1)1,2 was born Abt. 1800 in Patrick County, Virginia, and died October 25, 1872 in Winchester, Franklin County, Tennessee.  He married LAODICEA CORN3,4 in Franklin County, Tennessee, daughter of JESSE CORN and NANCY HANCOCK.  She was born January 10, 1803 in Patrick County, Virginia, and died Bet. 1838 - 1840 in Franklin County, Tennessee.

Notes for ROBERT STOCKTON SHARP:

He was a Captain in the Tennessee Militia in 1828

Something happened to him mentally later in his life. After his wife Dicey died, he began to be unbalanced, becoming worse, over time.

He left his children in the care of his brother and sister-in-law, and in the 1850 census, he is listed living with Maryann Howell. No further information is known about her.

Robert was living in an insane asylum in Nashville, Tennessee in 1860 and his son, Wm. W., was his guardian. William left provisions for his father in his 1863 will. In a deposition by Thomas Finch in 1870, Robert was referred to as being a lunatic.

BIRTH-MARRIAGE: Records, Virginia W Guyton, 902 Burleson, Smithville, TX, 78957-1024. C 8 Oct 1995

Shows Dicea's birthday as 5/18/1803 in Patrick County, VA

Dicea doesn't appear in the household with Robert and their family in the 1840 census.  It seems most likely that she died during, or soon after, the birth in 1838 of her youngest daughter and before the 1840 census.

Natural daughter of Robert Stockton Sharp and Laodicea (Corn) Sharp.

Sometime after the death of Laodicea, her sister, Mary (Corn) Sharp and her husband, James Sharp (also Robert's brother) adopted Susan. Robert Stockton Sharp apparently started losing his mental faculties after Laodicea, his wife died.

Susan is shown as an heir in Mary (Corn) Sharp's will which was recorded on Jul 11, 1865 in Franklin Co., TN

Mulberry Male and Female Institute was founded in 186? and enjoyed an uninterrupted career of prosperity during the administration of its first President, Rev. T. D. Jones, who died in the fall of 1873. At the time he was elected to the presidency of this school he occupied the chair of ancient languages at Mary Sharp College, was a teacher of recognized ability in the State, and his death was a public calamity. He was ably assisted by a competent corps of teachers. Miss Sue F. Sharp, a graduate of Mary Sharp College, of whom her alma mater was always proud, taught the higher branches of mathematics. A woman of frail constitution, and with indomitable energy, she literally sacrificed herself for the good the her pupils. She died in the midst of usefulness and is enshrined in the hearts of her students. Peace be to her ashes.
