Notes for WILLIAM SHARP, SR.:

According to family notes, the Stockton's objected to Jemima marrying William Sharp. "They were well to do and proud gentry, but William was in the trade - a hatter." Although he did have a factory, he only made hats. Jemima climbed out the window on a  Saturday night and eloped with William. The Stockton's cut her off, and never had anything more to do with her. She and William drifted off, saving their money, and then buying land in Franklin County, Tennessee in the early 1800's. They bought more land, and became very wealthy. They loved land and money, but particularly, land. The barns and pastures of their plantation were well equipped to care for the many fine animals (including race horses and hunting dogs) that they owned. The Sharps were nervous, high strung, very quick, and intelligent. They believed that no man was good enough to marry their daughters. The girls were indulged but made fine women.

Although I am not descended from any of the William SHARPs (at least to my knowledge as of this moment), I am nevertheless interested in sorting them out, because I am descended from John SHARP of Henry/Patrick Cos., Va., who was either a brother or a cousin of the William SHARP, Sr., who m. Jemima STOCKTON.

In his pension papers, John SHARP Sr. stated that he had been born in Chesterfield Co., married in Buckingham Co., and enlisted from Bedford Co.  One theory is that both he and William Sr. were sons of a Richard SHARP who was active in those counties and with whom they appear to have had some relationship, although not necessarily a father/son one.

The STOCKTONs came from Albemarle, Va., which leads me to wonder if William SHARP wasn't connected to the SHARPs of Albemarle.  A William SHARP does appear in Albemarle Co. Court Papers (1782 and 1783 Folders) as being owed £660 by Benjamin DAWSON and David RODES.  Since this is a fairly large sum of money, if this is the William who m. Jemima STOCKTON, these court papers would seem to contradict the story about Jemima having to elope with William because her family didn't think he was prosperous enough to marry her.

One version of that story also states that William Sr. was a hatter.  The William N. SHARP who m. Philipena FITZGERALD in Patrick Co., Va., was also a hatter.  In two deeds of trust that he took out in 1831, one with William CLARK as trustee (14 Sept. 1831, DB8, p. 7), the other with Matthew SANDIFUR as Trustee (17 Oct. 1831, DB8, p. 8), William N. SHARP mortgaged not only land and livestock but also the tools "belonging to his hatter's shop."

This certainly doesn't prove that William N. SHARP was the son of William SHARP, Sr. (he was more likely the son of John SHARP, Sr.), but it's interesting, nevertheless, since trades did run in families.

___________

Deeds and other records do indeed support the belief that the William SHARP who moved to Franklin Co., Tenn., ca 1811/12 was the William SHARP on the Patrick Co., Va., Land Tax Lists from 1791-1811.

In 1811 and 1812 John BURNETT and Thomas REAVES were taxed on land sold to them by SHARPs who were identified only by their surname in the Tax Records:

1811                John BURNETT --  860 acres from SHARP

1812                Thomas REAVES - 1000a from SHARP

John BURNETT --  860a from SHARP, 140a from SHARP

The deed to REAVES is from William SHARP, Sr.; I have a photocopy.  I haven't seen the deeds to BURNETT, but William SHARP Sr.'s sons, Richard and James, also disappear from the land tax records in 1811/1812.

The real problem comes with the other William SHARP(s).  Beginning in 1809 a William SHARP, Jr., appears on the tax list with 50 acres.  Although only in 1813 do the tax lists begin to specify where land is located, the 1808 deed from John HALL to William SHARP, Jr., indicates that the 50 acres was on Goblingtown Creek (the area where William SHARP Sr. owned most of his property.)  In 1810 and 1811 William Jr. is taxed on this land (plus 100 acres that he bought from Robert SHARP -- assuming that both these William SHARP Jrs. are the same person).  Then in 1811 William Jr. sold the 50 acres to William Sr., who we know was in the process of leaving Patrick Co., Va., for Franklin Co., Tenn.  Although at first glance this seems peculiar, William Sr. does in fact sell more land (1000a) to Thomas REAVES than he had been taxed on in the previous year (700a), and William Jr.'s Goblintown Creek property may have been included in the total.

Richard Sharp (1777-1850) died in Franklin Co., TN and is buried there in the Sharp Cemetery.  According to his will he had grandchildren James Richard Weaver, Robert Houston Weaver, Emily Jane Weaver, Lucy Elizabeth Weaver, and John Gregory Weaver.  Franklin Co. Chancery Court records reveal Richard Sharp's daughter Amelia Ann married Thomas Weaver.  I would like to know who Thomas Weaver's parents were and where he was living (county and state) when he married Amelia Ann Sharp. DESIGNATION: 3rd Regiment of Tennessee Militia

COMMANDER: COLONEL STEPHEN COPELAND

DATES: January 1814 - May 1814

MEN MOSTLY FROM: Overton, Smith, Wilson, Franklin, Warren, Bedford, and Lincoln Counties

CAPTAINS: John Biler(Byler), John Dawson, William Douglass, William Evans, Solomon George, William Hodges, John Holshouser, Alexander Provine, Richard Sharp, George W. Still, James Tait, Moses Thompson, Allen Wilkinson, David Williams.

BRIEF HISTORY:

There were approximately 660 men in this regiment. They were part of a brigade led by General Thomas Johnson (the other regiment of Johnson's brigade was led by Colonel R. C. Napier). Jackson's report of the Battle of Horseshoe Bend (27 March 1814) mentions that Copeland's regiment was held in reserve during this engagement. But a part of the regiment saw action, as muster rolls show casualties from this battle in the companies of Captains Moses Thompson and Allen Wilkinson. Their line of march took them from Fayetteville (where they were mustered into service), through Fort Deposit, Fort Strother, and finally to Fort Williams.

The above is here because it bears further investigation to determine whether Captain Richard Sharp is the same man as Elizabeth Corn's husband.

Information learned and communicated in following note by Mary Smith to the Sharp distribution list of RootsWeb clearly established the fact that this man is the William Sharp Jr that was in later life known as William N. Sharp. Controversy over exactly who William N Sharp was had been ongoing for the past several years and, thanks to Mary's find, has now been put to rest. For those interested in learning more about the controversy, the dialogue (or most of it) that appeared on RootsWeb has been coalesced here.

For those interested in sorting out the two William SHARP, Jr.'s, of Patrick Co., Va., I have confirmed the following:

The William SHARP, Jr., who married Peney FITZGERALD 24 Feb. 1811 (bond & license) is the same person as the later William N. SHARP of Patrick Co. records.  Although both the bond and the license list his name as William SHARP, Jr., he signed his name as "William N. SHARP" on the bond with surety Harvey FITZGERALD.  (PCVA Marriage Book, pp. 391, 559)

This supports later evidence that William N. SHARP's wife was named Philipena.  Patrick Co., Va., Order Book #3 for 12 March 1829 mentions that Philipena SHARP relinquished her dower rights to the 100 acres of land that her husband, William N. SHARP, had sold to Samuel SHARP 12 Feb. 1829.

"Peney" was a common nickname for Philipena.  Unfortunately there were two Philipena/Peney SHARPs in Patrick Co., Va., both with daughters named Louvenia, and this has led to some confusion.
