Mr. Hoppin seems to think that Edward and Margaret Stephens of Kingswear were the parents of the wife of Chirstopher Avery. Edward Stephens was a mariner who died in 1626. His inventory was exhibited  at Totnes in Dec of that year. The witness thereto was Hugh Sweets whose name it will be remembered was appended to the inventory of Christopher Avery's estate. Margaret Stephens died in 1643, at which time she was called of Brixham.

The Groton Avery Clan says he was a mariner. His inventory was exhibited at Totnes in December 1626. It was witnessed by Hugh Sweete, who also witnessed the inventory of Christopher Avery Sr. and whose name later appears on two other documents that may relate to Christopher Sr.
