The given name Davis occurs again and again through the Whelchel family. Two of his grandsons married women named Davis, giving the name further impetus. According to the Whelchel family history and Gina Whelchel, Davis and Sarah came to America from northern Ireland.

Davis Stockton's origin, his arrival in America and his marriage are matters of difference among Stockton researchers, however the question of whether he was a son of Richard Stockton, b. abt. 1640 has been put to rest. DNA tests have shown that Davis' and Robert's DNA match, but they are a separate line to that of Richard. At this point, neither the parents nor a common ancestor of Robert and Davis are known.

"History of the Stockton Family" by John Wharton Stockton (1881) lists "Richard Stockton the second" and says, "He left a widow, Susannah, and six sons, Richard, Samuel, Joseph, Robert, John and Thomas." In "The Stockton Family of New Jersey and Other Stockton's" (1911), Dr. Thomas Coates Stockton gives essentially the same information. Neither of them mentions a Davis Stockton as a son of Richard. Dr. Stockton wrote, "The record of the Pennsylvania and Virginia Stockton's begins with Davis Stockton and Robert Stockton, who were born about the same time, both settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania" "Virginia Magazine of History and Biography" says that Davis Stockton came from the north of Ireland and that, from the fact that the family of Robert Stockton were Presbyterians and intermarried with a number of Scotch-Irish families, it seems probable that he also was Scotch-Irish and that he and Davis Stockton were brothers.

One group of researchers says that Davis Stockton married a Goudylouch. It is known that his daughter Hanna married Adam Godylouch, and it is not impossible that Adam was a cousin. Here again, we have no proof, so we will leave Davis Stockton's marriage for future determination.

Davis Stockton is supposed to have come from northern Ireland in the early 1700's, settling first in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, later in Albemarle County, Virginia."

It is known that, on 12 March 1739, Davis was in Goochland (Albemarle) County, Virginia, where he obtained a grant of 400 acres adjoining land of Adam Godylouch, husband of Davis' daughter Hanna. (This surname is spelled in numerous ways, including Goudylock.)

In a 1762 census of books in the colony of Virginia, Davis was credited with having two books, valued at five shillings.

Joe Funderburk reports that Davis Stockton married Sarah Gudylouch.

Leona Irene Smith Johnson and Winfred Broadus Smith report in their "Davis Stockton of Virginia," published privately in 1972 and reprinted in 1975 (total of 35 copies) that Davis Stockton was born about 1686 in Flushing, Long Island, New York and died in 1761 in Albemarle County, Virginia with his estate inventoried 2 January 1762.

"History of Albemarle County, Virginia" reports that Davis made an entry of 400 acres on Ivy Creek in 1739 and 800 more on both forks of Mechum's River in 1741. Altogether, according to this book, the Stockton's owned almost 4,000 acres in that area. The same book says that the Stockton's "in a number of ways, left their mark behind. They consisted of several branches. They erected perhaps the first mill in that section of the county. The north fork of Mechum's River still bears the name of Stockton's Creek, the south fork in early times was called Stockton's Mill Creek, and the first name by which Israel's Gap was known as Stockton's Thoroughfare."

"History of Albemarle County, Virginia" records that, en route from Williamsburg to "the wilds of Goochland," Davis Stockton and Michael Woods, who had led the immigration into Albemarle County, separated with Woods continuing straight forward to Woods' Gap and Stockton bearing to the left along the foot of the mountain towards Batesville. At the point where they separated, Davis Stockton carved his initials in a tree, and the point became known as "D. S."

"History of Albemarle County, Virginia" says that Davis Stockton died in 1760, after which his widow Martha seems to have married Samuel Arnold, who lived on Ivy Creek. This does not match information from other sources.

From Cheryl Cummings and other sources, I have received this information on the early Stockton's. While I find it plausible, there are others who challenge it, so I am putting it in these notes under Davis Stockton for future reference.

Paul Hagen reports that Davis Stockton died in 1760 and that his will was probated in 1762. He says also that, in 1756, Davis Stockton's wife, Sarah, patented 397 acres of land on both sides of the Virgin Spring Branch of Mechum River in Albemarle County, Virginia (Patent Book #34, 1756-62).
