1.  LUCY ANNE10 WHEELER  (EDWIN P.9, PHINEAS8, SHEPPARD7, SHEPARD6, THOMAS5, ISAAC4, ISAAC3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born Jan 16, 1842 in New York, and died Jan 15, 1931 in Ft. Worth, Tarrant Co., TX.  She married (1) JOSEPH A. BARDEN.  He was born to ASA & ABIGAIL C. (JARVIS) BARDEN Abt. Nov. 1844 in NY or MA. Joseph died Sep. 2, 1870 in Ithaca, Tompkins Co., NY, and is buried there at Ithaca City Cemetery.  Lucy married (2) LIEUT BRADLEY LYMAN TERRY1 and both were first found together in the 1880 census records for Colorado Springs, El Paso Co., CO.  Bradley was born to RODERICK & LUCINDA COIT (RIPLEY) TERRY on April 26, 1842 in New York, and died Dec 1, 1923 in Ft. Worth, Tarrant Co TX.

Notes for LUCY ANNE WHEELER:

________________________________________________________________________________

There are a number of conflicts in the information found on Lucy.  For example, the 1860 & 1880 census, and her Death Certificate show her birthplace to be MA.  However the 1900 census shows her birthplace as New York. In 1860, her age is show as 17 (b:~1843). By 1880, she is shown as 35 (b:~1845), and by 1900 she is shown as b 1/1848, which is consistent  with her death certificate (1/16/1848). Also, the 1900 census shows her to have been married to Bradley Terry for 34 years.  If this were true, Bradley would have been father of Lucy's daughter Lena.  However, by the time of Lena's marriage to Jesse H. Melton in 1894, she was using the surname "Barden", as this is shown on her marriage certificate.

Notes for JOSEPH A. BARDEN:

I'm almost sure this is the first husband of Lucy, and the father of Lena. Joseph lived in Lee, MA at the same time that Lucy was there and were in the same high school together. He is found in census records of Lee up through 1860. Then in 1866-1870 he is found in the Ithaca City Directory, working first as a bookkeeper and later as a Freight Clerk. In the 1870 Census he appears as a bookkeeper, and is shown married to a "Mrs" Barden with their 2 year old daughter, Lena.

The following information was extracted from micro fiche records of the Fort Worth City directory on at the downtown Ft. Worth public library by Joy Luttrell Tubbs while researching her great grandfather, Daniel C. Terry. Joy collected this information on Bradley Terry's family, years ago, hoping that Bradley and Daniel might be related as they were both living in Ft. Worth during the same time frame. No connection has yet been found.

Adding to the above, additional information on Brad Terry is as follows:

8/29/1879 Issue of the Colorado Springs Gazette (El Paso County, Colorado)

Under "Hotel Arrivals"

Pascoe's Hotel - ... "Brad Terry, Fairgrounds"

[I'm don't know the meaning of "Fairgrounds", but the entry only shows his name tending to indicate that he didn't arrive with a wife or family. Although it is possible for him to have been married to Lucy at this time, I have so far only found him listed without any mention of a wife.  The 1880 census record for Colorado Springs is the first time that Brad and Lucy are found together (Lucy's daughter, Lena also appears).]

1890

The 1890 Veterans Schedule, Brad is listed as then living in Ft. Worth, and that he had been a Lieutenant in the 161st New York Volunteers during the Civil War. Under "disabilities" it is stated that he was "shot in the leg".  Under "remarks"  is added "papers lost".   I believe that entries on the schedule are made using responses given by the subject, in this case statements by Bradley Terry. At the current time (2001), considerable information has been accumulated for the 161st NY Vols, and can be found on the internet. However, Bradley Terry is not found on those rosters.  Having made contact with researchers of this information, they believe that Brad's name would have appeared had he been in that unit, especially due to the fact that he was an officer.
