- Just a reminder that June 13th is our Court of Honor. All blue
cards need to be turned in on Monday, June 6th in order to be
presented with the merit badge at this Court. If not, you will
have to wait until the Court of Honor in October.
- Also, I have the Padre tickets for the August 22nd game against
the Houston Astros. This is one of our Summer Activities. I have
40 tickets and they are available on a first come first served
basis. The permission slips for all of the Summer Activities will
be passed out at the June 13th Court of Honor. See you all Monday.

Scouts,
I want to thank each and every one of you that attended Mr. Estes
Memorial Service last night. I was very impressed with how each
of you deported yourself and very proud to have been with you
on this opportunity to pay our respects to the great leader and
sage of Troop 53. You imbued the Scout Spirit that makes me and
your community so proud of you. Thanks for representing the Troop
in such a fine fashion. Hank Levien

Dear Scouts,
I forgot to mention this at last nights meeting. Mea culpa. Ms.
Shirley Kelly called from the Friends of the Kensington Library
to ask if 3 or 4 scouts would be willing to help them on Memorial
Day, May 30th. I guess there is a parade in Kensington with a
fair at the park. The library will be hosting a book sale and
needs help bringing the books out from the library, setting them
up and then putting them away when it is over. She said they would
start at about 8:30 a.m. and would be putting things away at about
1 p.m. If any of you would be willing to help, please respond
to me via e-mail (kurthauser@pacbell.net ) or by calling me on
619-518-6163. The time spent would be counted as service hours
if any of you need them for advancement in rank or just for extra
jewels in your crown. Please try to let me know no later than
next Monday’s meeting. Thanks everyone.

- April 30, 2005 - http://homepage.mac.com/eddominick/PhotoAlbum28.html
- This is a web site that Ed Dominic put together of the photos
from this year's Scout Fair. It has couple of pictures of our
Troop. One is really good. I looking through the photos, I was
wondering if we should have a Troop 53 "Stands Above the
Rest" banner made.

- April 2, 2005 - Boy's Life
Orienteering Information
- Scouts & Parents,
-
It has been brought to my attention that the April 2005 Boy’s
Life magazine has a couple pages of good information on Orienteering.
Please look at pp. 30, 31, 34, 35, 35 and 37. We did some of
this during the March outing and will do some more during the
April Outing. Remember the May outing is the 24-hour capture
the flag using an area that is a couple miles square. Being
able to read the map and compass during this game play will
be key to your team’s success. Please read and understand
what is being presented in this article. I would encourage the
parents to work with your son/scout on the principles shown
in Boy’s Life over the next few weeks. Thanks, Hank

- March 19, 2005 - Family Life Website
- Dear Scouts,
I am a Family Life merit badge counselor, and I
have worked with a number of boys in the troop who have earned
this badge. When I was working with Sam, his mother alerted me
to this Website which has great information about requirements
for all badges. Additionally, it has a template that you can use
to record information and ideas and answers as you complete the
Family Life badge. Having things written down helps you gather
information as you work on the badge, and it makes the interview
with the counselor easier. Check it out and see if it might work
for you.

- March 2, 2005 - Summer Concerts in Bird Park
- Dear Scouts,
As I mentioned on Monday, they are asking for our help again
this year at the Summer Concerts in Bird Park. It is an easy
assignment. We listen to the music and when it is over, we pick
up the trash. We also make the rounds during the concert to
see if any trash cans are overflowing. Usually we need 2-4 scouts
per night and at least 2 adult. It is a great way to spend time
with your family and listen to good music among your friends
and neighbors. As soon as I know who is playing on each night,
I will let you know. The dates of the concerts are: July 2 (we
will be coming home from Summer Camp that day so I told them
we would not be available. If you are not going to Summer Camp
and would like to volunteer, let me know), July 16, July 30,
August 6 and August 20. I will have a sign up sheet as soon
as I get the times of the concerts and make sure the dates are
firm. Thanks again scouts for your willingness to help in the
community.
