Return Of The Living Dead

THE ZOMBIE TANK

From the moment I first saw 'Return Of The Living Dead'
the actual concept of the Zombie Tank/Drum prop made
such an impression upon me that I knew one day I would
like to 'have a bash' at making at least one of these props
for myself. Here follows the story !

Shown above are a pair of drums from Living Dead 2 - the first thing that springs
to mind when shown full shot next to live actors is that there is NO way the drums
could actually contain a full size person - unless they were very small ! So, where to
start for reference apart from screen captures ? When the project commenced, dvd
was in its infancy so it was make-do with VCR and freeze-frame from the then only,
somewhat blurry, release available. It quickly became apparent that there were
several styles of drum used in the film - different lids, closure clasps etc. so the first
job was to pick on a drum to make. The 'busiest' more featured in close-up shots
was chosen. Permission was then sort in a couple of phone calls to Fantasy Films
to go ahead - always wary of the 'Copyright Monster' - and to see if they held any
archival materials - they did not - and were most interested in getting for their own
records photos of the finished build. In due course photos were duly dispatched.

Next step was to source materials and in the true manner of all inspired prop making,
futz it all together through trial and error and a handful of hasty drawings and best
guestimates as to original dimensions of fixtures and fittings - - with, I think, not a
small measure of some success in the end result complete with interred zombie and
working electrics the drum has been displayed at several national Horror Cons such
as Chiller Theatre and been seen by the original author and brains ( unintended pun - )
behind the first  movie John Russo, featured in Chiller Magazine and posed with by
actress Linnea Quigley - ' Trash ' in Living Dead 2 -  so is it the ultimate ' Trash can' - -
intended pun methinks - - - and garnered praise from all concerned. Ah, yes - Result !

Teaser photo for now - check back for updates !
