Thank you for your interest in finding a cure for diabetes. In 2007 I ran a half-marathon (13.1 miles) with Team Diabetes - Phoenix. I personally raised over $1200 for the American Diabetes Association. Collectively Team Diabetes raised over $112,000 for the American Diabetes Association. In 2008 I ran a full marathon (26.2 miles) on my own. I had started out with Team Diabetes, but fell short of my fundraising goal.
This year I am attempting to raise over $2000 for the American Diabetes Association to help support diabetes research. Like last year, I have entered the P.F. Chang's Rock & Roll Marathon, with the intention of running a full marathon (26.2 miles).
Hopefully I can count on your support in my endeavor. A small donation can go a long way. Click here to Make a Donation
This isn't just for me and my family. I don't need the help nearly as much as many others do. I have managed to get my diabetes relatively under control. When I was diagnosed in January 2005 I read every book I could, visited as many websites as I could and started taking control of my health. I was fortunate that I caught this disease before any serious damage was done. I am young enough and healthy enough that I have been able to make the necessary lifestyle changes.
Not everybody is that fortunate. There are many diabetics that weren't diagnosed until it was too late. Many of them have lost limbs, eyesight, suffered kidney failure or heart disease. These people cannot do the necessary exercise to control their disease. They cannot simply modify their diet and hope to avoid the complications the way I did. I want to make sure that we find a cure so that everybody that is suffering can be cured.
Return to TopThose of you that know me are probably wondering how I am managing to run. It wasn't long ago that I was an overweight couch potato. I even used to smoke; although I quit that ugly habit last century. Since my diagnosis in January 2005 I started to take better care of myself. I lost over 50lbs, started eating healthier and have been quite the exercise fanatic. I have complete 5 half-marathons, 1 full marathon and an assortment of shorter races. This website shows the races I have completed. My race results and info
I lost my mother in 1999 partly due to diabetes. She died partly from heart failure, but was diagnosed as diabetic just prior to her death. We have assumed that diabetes was responsible. My grandfather was diabetic and had many vision problems, including cataracts. My aunt has diabetes and recently suffered a stroke. Strokes are common for women with diabetes. As you can see my family has been affected by this disease. I'm sure many of you can look back at your own families and friends and know of somebody that has been affected by this disease.
