Have been training for about a month now. It's going fairly well, especially since this is old hat for me. I've even managed to do some running in the afternoon while it's 100 degrees out. I just make sure to keep myself hydrated and hope that there is some shade on the route. Tempe Town Lake seems to be good for this. By the time I get halfway through, the sun is starting to fade and there are plenty shadows.
Am knocking wood here, but the injury bug has stayed away. My fitness level is good enough and I don't get crazy and try to break world records. From speaking with other runners, I think the biggest cause of injuries is pushing yourself faster than your body can handle it. Even the world-class runners know to pace themselves. Now granted they do push themselves, but only after they have built a foundation of fitness. I have learned to take their advice, albeit on a much smaller scale. So far, so good.
It is time to start running for Team Diabetes. We had our kick-off party last Wednesday and our first group run on Saturday. It felt good to get back into the swing of things. Saw some familiar faces and some new faces as well. It is very encouraging to see new people that have never run before getting started. That first step is the hardest, but once you get past that you will amaze yourself.
This year I plan on doing the full marathon again. I completed the full last year on my own. I was disappointed that I couldn't raise enough money to stay with the team. I am going to try a few new ideas and see how that goes.
