Tin Cantenna

Antenna + tin Can + stick/dongle USB wireless adapter

View from my condo porch

This link shows my tin cantenna, on the 2nd story of my condo, about 150 feet (or so) from the marina clubhouse.

The antenna at the access point is an +11 dBi "industrial omni antenna" from www.Fab-corp.com.  It is mounted at the top fascia board of the "3rd story (e.g. just above the top most windows, which are above the 2nd story),

It is mounted on a 30-inch metal antenna mast, also from Fab-corp.

The antenna was intended to cover about 210 degrees on the opposite side from where I am - which is where the boats are - 170 slips.

We also have PCs on the first floor of the marina which still work just fine.  Initially I was worried about the down angle of the antenna.  We also get great reception from the 2nd floor which extends the length and width of the clubhouse building.

My latest challenge was to allow reception from the condos where I am in the picture.  Initially, the antenna was lower down, just above the 2nd story windows.  No LOS.  With my tin cantenna and DWL-122 USB wireless adapter, I was able to get reliable signal from my porch.

When mounted the AP antenna in its permanent location, I also moved my tin cantenna to a post which supports the deck of the unit above me.  That positioned it up higher.  From that position I have LOS to about 25% of the AP antenna.  Netstumbler readings improved.  I now get -90 dBi for my noise reading and -68 dBi for my signal.  The adapter says about 45% signal quality.

Clarance Dold's picture of how his USB adapter is mounted in a coffee can shows the position I also used
