Can you name the flower parts? |
The photo on the right shows a lily and, if you look closely, you can see many different parts. Look for the stamens, each with a filament and anther. Then look for the pistil with its stigma at the top. It's easy to pick out the petals and the lily buds. |

The poinsettia, above left, and the bougainvillea, above center, are examples of flowers surrounded by bracts. Above, the poinsettia flowers are the tiny yellow flowers in the center of the photo. They are surrounded by red bracts, which many people mistake for flowers. The bougainvillea has pink bracts and tiny light yellow flowers. |

The photos on the left and right show examples of composite flowers. Composite flowers are really two kinds of flowers in one. To the left, the white petals on the Shasta Daisy are ray flowers, which encircle the floral head made up of yellow disk flowers in the center. Ray flowers have petals, but do not have pistils or stamens. Look for the ray flowers and the disk flowers in the composite flower, which is a Gerbera Daisy, to the right. |
