Neighborhoods

The second grade students in Room 201 at Reservoir Avenue School in Providence, Rhode Island wrote this about their special neighborhood:

The Reservoir Avenue School Neighborhood

Our school is in an urban neighborhood. There are trees in our neighborhood, and there are plants and flowers, but not as many as in a suburban or rural neighborhood. There are apartments and duplexes. There are a lot of tenements and a little of single family houses. There are a lot of restaurants and stores. Some of the stores are big and some are little. We have lots of churches. We have lots of gas stations. There are offices in our neighborhood. There is a hospital too, and it is called the Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children's Hospital. In front of our school is a big street called Reservoir Avenue. A lot of cars go down that street. City buses and trucks go down that street too. On the sides of the school, the streets are little. There are telephone poles on the sidewalks and streetlights too. There are traffic lights too and stop signs. We have fire stations and a police station.

The police station is really downtown. Downtown is not too far away. Providence Place Mall is downtown, and it is very big. It has two movie theaters - Hoyt's Cinema and IMAX. There are lots of skyscrapers there too. A lot of businesses are downtown. Downtown has City Hall where the mayor works. There are hotels downtown too. Most of the land in our neighborhood has buildings on it. There is one place called Roger Williams Park Zoo that has a lot of land without buildings on it. In Roger Williams Park there are some places with water that are lakes and ponds. In our neighborhood, there is a field to play baseball and a playground that don't have buildings on them. There are no farms in our neighborhood.

The fall is hot and cold here. When it is the beginning of fall, it is hot. Then it gets to be only a little bit hot, and then it gets cold when it is close to winter. Winter gets temperatures that are in the twenties or lower sometimes. It snows sometimes in winter, and we wear heavy coats, hats, gloves or mittens, and sometimes a scarf. In the snow, we wear boots. When spring comes, the temperatures get a little bit warmer, but not too much yet. In spring, it rains a lot so that the trees can grow and the plants and the flowers can grow. The grass also turns greener. Then when spring is almost over, it gets kind of hot. Then summer comes, and in summer it is hot. Sometimes the temperatures are in the nineties, but mostly they are in the eighties. Then after summer, it is fall again, and the seasons start all over in our neighborhood. We have a nice neighborhood. We like it very much.
