Here is Tunia in Cottondale's Touch and Smell Garden. |
November 4, 1999:
Tunia visited Cottondale's Touch and Smell Garden. She really loved the smell of peppermint!November 5, 1999:
Yesterday's photo of Tunia showed Tunia in a garden planted with rosemary, lamb's ear, sage, lemon balm and peppermint. In the study of plants, the students in Mrs. Calhoun's class learned that mints are invasive, so the mints had to be planted in a big pot and sunk in the ground. They also learned that mints have square stems. The students and Tunia love the Touch and Smell Garden.November 15, 1999:
Tunia loves it at Cottondale Elementary School. She has visited the Tuscaloosa County Environmental Learning Center. While there, she walked a trail that took her through the woods and over creeks. She saw many plants. After the nature walk, she had a picnic lunch by a lake. She then joined the class in a scavenger hunt. She helped hunt for leaves from a hickory tree, a sweet gum tree, a water oak, a loblolly pine, a silver maple, a cedar, a dogwood and a southern magnolia. It was a fun and interesting trip.|
November 16, 1999: Mrs. Calhoun's class took Tunia for a walk around the school yard. They were looking for trees. They collected leaves from the trees. When they got back to the classroom, they did a leaf rubbing and then taped the leaves to paper. Auburn University provided the class with 20 copies of "A Key to Common Trees in Alabama." The class used that booklet to help identify the trees found in the school yard. Pine,White Oak, Eastern Red Cedar, Sweetgum, Yellow-Poplar, Dogwood, and Hickory were some of the trees in our school yard. |
